Did she die of heartbreak?
Man, now I want to write a medieval epic about Big Mac's journey.
That at the end turns out to have been written by Big Mac. And found by Applejack. Who's just confused about why Big Mac killed himself in his own story.
"Mah character was a b'ronic hero! His death underlahned the tragic nature of his charact'r n' flaws, an' cements the theme of responsibility to their relationships versus responsibility to one's own self!"
"Okay, but wha'd you kill Rarity?"
"Because she gets hoovsey when she's takin' measurments for mah yokes."

Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.Well, that was a really fun episode.
Chimera… Huh. There was a Dark Fic waaaay back when that involved the CMC getting mauled by a chimera… weird.
So how does that closet full of hats fit with AJ saying (in that Hot Topic commercial) that she won her hat bobbing for apples at the fair? Did she win ALL her hats bobbing for apples at various fairs? Or does she just have free hats for life thanks to being sponsored by the hat company back in her professional apple-bobbing days?

@Meta: Maybe that was her first hat and she liked it so much that she bought backups.
Also, yeah, AJ is going a little overboard in this episode. Which is really weird considering that Apple Bloom and the crusaders have had a lot of freedom in previous episodes. I can see the idea of AJ being nervous at leaving her home alone, but stuff like babyproofing the house just strikes me as overkill for her.
Reaction Image RepositoryThat manticore tail is channelling Kaa, apparently.
EDIT: Finished the episode. It was... okay. Applejack's sudden extreme overprotectiveness was just weird. If it would have been like a S1 episode it would have made plenty of sense, but over the past three seasons, Apple Bloom has had quite a bit of freedom to run around without supervision, so seeing AJ suddenly convinced that she can't even hang around the house for a day without injuring herself just doesn't make sense. If they would've made it so that she was worried about AB getting into trouble it would've made a lot more sense.

Reaction Image RepositoryWell, that was a decent episode. The chimera fight was kinda cool. Also, the lesson can certainly be interpreted negatively (run away from home to prove that you can look after yourself!) but I liked it anyway.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/Also, those boots are probably going to get a lot of attention.
I think it was pretty clear that Apple Bloom was kind of dumb for doing that. Still, I can see how it could be easily misinterpreted, though. That's why I think AJ's motivation should've been changed a little.

That's because they weren't. We'd never seen RD in that sort of situation or not and given how she ties her reputation to her self-esteem, it makes sense. And Rarity has always been a bit of an Attention Whore.
And I wouldn't necessarily say that AJ was out of character; it's more that she lacked a good motivation to be so worried about Apple Bloom. Aside from Bridle Gossip, where she had a good reason to be afraid, she's never been shown to be particularly overbearing when it comes to Apple Bloom. The other thing is that the CMC have basically been Free-Range Children for the past three seasons, so it's just weird for AJ to suddenly become a helicopter sibling after three seasons of leaving her sister alone. Out of 80+ episodes of the show, AJ is shown as being overprotective maybe like... once, and even that is sort of justified. Seeing that trait drive the conflict of the episode despite her not really having it before is a bit jarring.

Reaction Image RepositoryThere's a bit of a difference between letting your sister hang out with her friends in town and letting her stay home alone. To run chores on a farm.
The problem I have is that people like to analyze episodes but forget that the show is essentially a comedy that draws humor from broadly-defined characters, who have always been malleable from episode to episode for the sake of gags and morals, and it's been like this ever since season 1.
It just seems to come down to "If it's in season 1, it adds depth to the characters. If it's in season 4, it's out of character."
@Pannic: Thing is, AJ's thing goes way past that. She babyproofs the house. She treats it like Apple Bloom is going to disembowel herself while making a sandwich. Despite that Apple Bloom has gone and wandered into the Everfree and gone ziplining. And it's not like an existing trait that AJ has is getting exaggerated. She's never shown any sort of over-protectiveness even close to that. I recognize that yes, the characters are largely Broad Strokes, but this almost falls outside of that, because AJ's "broad strokes" characterization has never included "is extremely overprotective", and what we've seen of farm life implies the opposite. She's never made any attempt to police AB's activities beyond "don't follow the supposed sorceress into the evil forest".

.... wasn't Rarity supposed to arrive at Sweet Apple Acres to look after Apple Bloom!?
