A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

I suspect some amount of Hype Backlash.
Man, I wonder if they kept that "Please insert disk #(absurd number here)" joke in that log in Secret. I bet most the kids these days wouldn't even get it (I may have owned the 3.5" floppy version back in the day >.>). *Waves old man cane.* Git off my lawn!

This. Consoles have long ago lost the justification for their existence. Watching the PS 4 and Xbone desperately try to pretend that they're still relevant would be funny if it weren't so sad.
Also speaking of Steam, there's another Humble Bundle going on.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayThem ost disks I've ever seen in a game is four, for some of the PS 2 Final Fantasy games.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.Yeah, the Xbox especially is putting a lot of effort into being a "home entertainment system" instead of a "game console." If this isn't the last generation of dedicated proprietary game consoles before they're replaced by some kind of all-in-one entertainment system with an universal format for games, the next one almost certainly will be.
@Story: And now they're going after Snorlax. This ought to be fun.
As for consoles vs. PC, consoles have one big thing going for them: You usually don't have to worry about constantly updating your video card/sound card/whatever to make sure it can run everything. One of the main reasons I never did any PC gaming is because it was just too annoying to buy a game and find out that I don't have the specs for it.

Reaction Image RepositoryBy far the worst thing about the PS 3 was that almost every time I turned it on to play something I needed to spend half an hour downloading and installing an update. Not sure if the new gen is as bad about that but I sure as hell hope not.
Yeah, console gaming's biggest strength has always been accessibility of the technology. All you have to do to be sure a game is going to work on your console is make sure the box says the right console's name on it. Most people simply don't have the technical know-how, or just the inclination, to upgrade a computer just to run a certain game, so consoles aren't likely to go away entirely anytime soon.
What is likely to be going away in the foreseeable future are proprietary consoles that only play games made with the matching proprietary format, and treat gaming as their primary function. So instead of having Xboxes, Playstations, and Nintendos, we'd just have game consoles that play any game you put in them, the same way DVD players play any DVD and not just Sony-, JVC-, Samsung-, etc. specific DVDs depending on who made your player. In fact, these new generic game consoles will probably also be DVD players (assuming another format hasn't usurped it), music players, DVRs, and so on. The Xbox One is already heading in that route. All that really needs to happen at this point is for either the big three to give up on proprietary formats, or someone else to develop a console that can read and play proprietary disks.
Hmm.
Isn't it rather convenient that Twilight found a book about the clash between Celestia and Nightmare Moon, and the Mare in the Moon story just a few days before the Summer Sun Celebration?
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/I need to get more games for mine... only one I have is Pokemon Y.
Then again, I have enough Steam games left still that it's hard to justify...
I'm gonna have to call Theory of Narrative Causality on that one. Though being Watsonian, I guess Celestia could have given it to her, or planted it for her to find or something. Celestia obviously had a handle on everything that was happening there, so it's not impossible or even unlikely that she had a hand in Twilight finding out about everything.

Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.I think they changed it to something console related, but I don't remember what it was.
That's how it used to be, but thanks to all the DRM and digital downloads nowdays, it's often harder to get a game set up on a console than PC. I think Yahtzee did an article about this.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play@Wryte: I wholeheartedly approve if that happens. The console wars were always dumb anyway. Honestly, that was the worst when I was growing up. I couldn't afford both a playstation and a nintendo, so I never got to play half of the games until years later.
@Ike, Kegisak: My guess would be that Celestia directed her to brush up on the history of the Celebration or something under the guise of preparation, and then steered her towards figuring out the NMM thing. We never find out why Twilight was reading that book.

Reaction Image RepositoryKegi- yeah, good point. I'm just wondering what would've happened if Twilight didn't know about the elements of harmony when NM returned.
JT- same to you.

http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/^^ Absolutely. It completely sucks when a game you're just dying to play is only available on a console you don't own, but you're not about to drop almost $600 just for one game. The proprietary system we have now is one of those ridiculous business arrangements that no consumer base would ever accept if it hadn't just been the way things were from the very beginning of the market.
I personally think the Elements of Harmony 2 parter were less loads of coincidences and more Celestia being a good GM. Step 1(. Ask bookworm student to research Summer Sun Celebration. Step 2) Send her to Ponyville and ask her to make friends. She will inevitably ignore this so put the other bearers directly in her path. Pinke is known to throw parties for everyone. 3) Let Twilight do the rest. If she was making friends specifically to use the Elements it wouldn't be true friendship.
The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing. The Skype thread had a bit of a chat on a similar topic. That Celestia and Luna aren't gods, just that they've had the time and experience to get a lot done. powerful maybe, but I think Twi's actually a little more powerful than celestia in terms of power, but is unskilled by her standards. Celestia doesn't have godly amounts of power, just really, really good at planning ahead.

Seriously, you'd think Fluttershy would be the first choice.
