A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

I came in thinking this should be a Sweetie Belle episode and not expecting much, but ended up completely changing my tune. I thought this was one of the show's cleverest episodes, it went in some really unexpected directions and really used continuity to its benefit. And the music was catchy. Just about the only flaw I can think of is Pinkie Jerk, but I still found her amusing.
Yeah, going along with just the summary it could've been a Sweetie Belle episode, but the whole "Flutterguy" twist made that impossible. That and I can't imagine Sweetie Belle having so much stage fright.
Reaction Image RepositoryAnd we can't have that. Status Quo may not be God in this show, but it is Jesus...what the hell did I just say?
You there! Check out my Youtube Channel! The power of Ponies compel you!Regarding pinkie's behavior...
But yeah, this was far from a good portrayal of Pinkie Pie. For the last few weeks, I've been hearing on how Pinkie suffered from Flanderization in seasons 3 and 4. It's gotten to where people have given up on Pinkie actually improving to being a joke factory.

Even then it wasn't nearly as exaggerated; she was still perfectly willing to get up on stage with the others. The other thing is that in this case the episode basically requires that the character realize they're a good singer and that they enjoy it, but be unable to do so due to her fears. Sweetie doesn't even realize that she has a talent for singing; you couldn't do the same plot with her unless she realized that singing was her special talent, at which point she'd get her CM. And she'd almost certainly want to show it off.
The way I see it, Pinkie Pie is a character who basically has no sense of moderation; everything she does is the extreme end. In this instance it's sensitivity; she either goes and treats Fluttershy with kid gloves, or forgets entirely and goes into Innocently Insensitive territory. I can't say that it's necessarily out of character for Pinkie, but I do think the writers need to put more effort into making her a well-rounded character when she isn't in the spotlight.
Then again, the show has always had difficulty with that.

Reaction Image RepositoryDid anyone else think that one pegasus filly might be a Breezy at first?
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI did, but no she's just an adorable filly who flys around like a hummingbird.
...Why do I sense we'll be seeing adorable fanart of her?
You there! Check out my Youtube Channel! The power of Ponies compel you!@Japanese Teeth: Really? I thought Pinkie was more controlled in the first two seasons. Or is there something I'm missing?
Don't Press Your Luck too many times in life. You'll just get whammied.Watching the episode now. Let me give a little live report here:
- Oh, wow. Fluttershy just went full Disney-princess, with the whole singing to animals bit.
- And then she got caught. "I hope you understand, that now I'll have to kill you."
- Seems Flutters does not take attention well. Well, at least not from fellow ponies. Guess being judged by your peers is a lot more scary than being judged by animals.
- (cue intro music)
- Wait, Big Mac is part of a singing group? Well, I'd never...
- Goddammit, Pinkie Pie, that's not how you encourage somepony.
- That has got to be the most definitive "no" I've ever heard from Flutters since putting your hoof down. And won't you just look at that! Calmly explaining your problem to people does help.
- Performance! Big Mac singing! And it's pretty darn good. I don't listen to A Capella half as much as I should, really, if at all. Except "for the longest time" by Billy Joel, which may or may not actually count.
- Spike, you suck.
- Oh, my god, Rarity! You should not tempt fate like that.
- Awww, I wanted to hear more of Big Mac on stage.
- That has got to be the dumbest possible reason for losing your voice at the last moment. Hope he at least won.
- He didn't. Bloody hell, Mac.
- You know, it's not often they think of Zecora when having trouble. They should do that more often. The lady knows her stuff.
- Too bad she can't help them soon enough. Or can she?
- She can. Well, that Call-Back came a long way. I wonder how long the writer has been waiting for a chance to use this again?
- "I would do anything for love, but I won't do that", eh, Flutters?
- And that, ladies and gents, is how you encourage somepony; emotional blackmail. The return of Flutterguy is on! I wonder if they got the same guy to act the part.
- Who's the beard? Again someone famous who just happened to be passing by during some event to make the performers an offer? Haven't we had that particular plot often enough already?
- Cat lady has cats, and Gummy has a turkey. That sight was worth the price of admission.
- Nope, probably not the same actor. At least it doesn't sound the same as the guy who did "evil enchantress".
- Great song, though. Does it count as A Capella with a background beat? Still awesome, but not sure if it does.
- Did Cherilee really faint at the sight of Big Mac, or was she just playing around? She'd be totally justified if she did, though, that's some nice deep voice.
- Fluttershy looks very cute singing behind the curtain like that. Also, I've just watched the performance three times. Favourite song of the season so far.
- Pet rescue complete, mission accomplished, commence clean-up.
- And Flutters got caught again. She might want to put a few ranks in stealth at the next level-up
- Ah, not somebody famous, just a kid's party. Much better really. Poor little doggie.
- More emotional blackmail! I like the beard's accent, for some reason.
- Yet another performance, yet another offer. Wouldn't Big Mac's voice be back by now? Eh, whatever.
- Flutters is starting to enjoy this way more than she's letting on. Cute. Makes me fear the inevitable unveiling. That sort of humiliation is not good for someone with serious stage fright.
- Was Big Mac just checking out Fluttershy's plot? First of all, shame on you Mac, in front of the children, of all times! Second of all, shipped!
- You'd think that by now everyone who wanted would have already heard the ponytones. Careful with overexposure, it killed more talented singers than you.
- Puppy pony eyes! That's just plain unfair. Also, no way in Tartarus this last performance won't go terribly wrong.
- Getting seriously carried away there.
- And there the whole thing goes down in flames. Poor Flutters.
- Damm, Applejack's incredibly insightful today.
- You know, going all together may not have been the best idea. Bringing Pinkie Pie definitely wasn't.
- You know, ponies, the quality of her performance isn't the problem here. Some people just really can't stand being the middle of attention, being judged is just the cherry on top of the anxiety-cake.
- "Got the music in you", one last time, with Flutters' song mixed in for good measure. Baby-steps on the audience, of course.
Good episode. Loved the song, loved the gags, loved the plot. One of the better parts of this season's crop so far.
And now to read everything you guys have said while actually discussing this live.
No, she's not much smaller than a normal filly. I think what confused me is that she looked like an adult and was accompanying a much bigger pony.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play@Psycho: Oh she does. My point is that Pinkie tends to oscillate between being extremely sensitive of her friends' feelings to being extremely insensitive. I.e. with Fluttershy, she either treats her with extreme sensitivity (like in "Griffon the Brush Off") or no sensitivity at all (This episode), and doesn't really have any middle ground of "not treating her like a weakling, but still not pushing too hard."
Reaction Image Repositoryso I think I just figured out what Zippoorwhill refers to.. It's probably a pun on the Eastern Whip-Poor-will bird.
Not sure if she resembles one, but the pun would make sense.

Huh? This episode isn't a musical. It has a few songs, but the episode is about singing.

So who did it? Peter New?
