A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

Thanks! I wanted to use a simple style since the RS style really hurts my hands(Damn arthritis). The style is similar to Mr. Driller in design, so yay anime!
@Sombra: Stairs were out years before you existed.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau Project@ Trenderhoof discussion a page back: He wasn't a douchebag or anything, but some of his lines did skirt Unfortunate Implications in the same vein as "I've always admired how good the Jews are with money" type.
Oh yeah i forgot about the You Are a Credit to Your Race thing he did with Applejack

Mostly he was just kind of awkward around Applejack. And not in the cute Adorkable way.

This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...I don't think it really falls under You Are a Credit to Your Race, that would be more like "You're really pretty, for an Earth Pony" or something like that. His comment doesn't really strike me as racist, given that Ponyville has Winter Wrap Up, which is basically an entire holiday celebrating the earth pony work ethic. If anything, it came across more sleazy because it shows that he's not really interested in AJ as a person; he's just interested in an idealization of Earth Ponies, and projecting it onto her.

The way I saw that was more that he was simply pulling out something that involved apples to appeal to her, even though the specific example he gives doesn't really mean much to AJ. She's not really interested (that we've seen at least) in taste-testing rare apple varieties; her whole schtick is simply growing as many good apples as possible. His entire characterization was based on the conceit that he's trying to impress Applejack without ever really taking the time to get to know her.

Reaction Image RepositoryIt's funny. That guy on Reddit (who claimed to be privy to Lauren Faust's Secret True Vision of season 3 and beyond) lamented that the show stopped mocking big-city ponies and started celebrating them the instant Faust left. Yet the Big City antagonists from seasons 1 and 2 were all caricatures. Their stupidity and badness were so one-dimensional that I'm surprised Blueblood didn't blow away in a stiff breeze. Now, in season 4, we're getting Big City antagonists (or at least, characters who introduce conflict) with some actual nuance. Siri What's-her-name was a nasty piece of work, but she originally hailed from Ponyville, so she as a warning about how Rarity would end up if she let the cutthroat environment of the city change her. And Trenderhoof meant well, but he clearly didn't know the first thing about life outside the city. That's hardly celebrating the upper crust, is it?
@Crow: Yeah, while it sounds bad Apples can only be re-grown from cuttings. Every apple will produce a unique tree from it's seeds, so it's kind of a moot point. Heck, it's wholly possible those apples went 'extinct' because they were simply bad.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.Yeah, if anything it just changed from making them stereotypes of the upper crust to examining why they end up being such jerks; in this case it was ignorance, while in Suri's case it was letting the city get to her and throwing others under the bus for her own benefit.
Reaction Image Repository@ JT: That's a valid interpretation. I'm not entirely sure it holds up becasue we've got real life holidays celebrating the accomplishments of various races and comments like Trenderhoof's still come across that way in our society. There is also confirmed raceism in Equestria's history. On the other hand, if what we see is an indication of how things are in general, it's not very much of a modern issue. Either way you look at it though, it really does add a whole new dimension to his character that you have to be pretty savvy to catch on to.
@ Meta Four: That's true. We've been getting a lot of really good big city antagonists lately compared to the early stuff.
