A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

But the old music is still available!

The good old music. good old books. good old everything. Only the good is avalable because only the good survives the test of time.

Better technology can, but does not necessarily mean better music. I'm of the opinion that primitive resources can make for some ingenius works given the limitations with certain composers. Tim Follin for instance, made music that pushed pretty much any gaming system he worked with to it's limits.

Terrible things will always exist, but that doesn't mean they'll always persist. Fifty Shades of Gray and Twilight aren't exactly going to be taught as classic literature in 100 years. However, good things will also continue to be created, even if in different forms than they previously existed.

[up][up]That's pure fanon. We've seen Vinyl play music several times and she's never pulled out the dubstep.

@Story: The fact that old music is available has precisely nothing to do with whether future music will be any good.

@Darkabomination: Is it just me, or are all the Tesla coil synth players just recording cover versions rather than original songs? The only original example I know of is Pepe Deluxé using it for the climax of "Queenswave".

My point is that since old music remains available, the best music available is always getting better.

Older video game music seems more iconic because the limitations meant they had to focus almost enteirely on the melody, so that made them catchier, because the melody is often what the human mind first thinks of. But there is totally great and catchy music beng made today, and the improvements to tech expand what we can do.

Actually, this video explains it better than I can.

I have a message from another time...

@Story: Okay, that makes a little more sense. I read it as saying that "newer music is inherently better" which makes no sense.

@Enlong: Pretty much this. Despite my earlier crack, I don't think all dubstep is bad (though I do think too many people think the more wubs they can stuff into a song the better it will be) but even when I like the song I wouldn't be able to hum any of it the next day.

Older music is hit or miss. Sometimes it's awesome, other times the sound quality is too low to really enjoy it. Of course for the popular games, you get orchestral and fan remixes giving the best of both worlds.

All true.

@Meta. Agreed, it should be used for more than novelty covers. Same with a capella, two great genres that need to branch out and do their own things rather than staying commercially viable.

On that note, it's a little sad to think the 50s and 60s had a lot of incredible vocal harmonies and voice work, yet modern works haven't really surpassed them.

Speaking of music, anyone have suggestions for underappreciated vg music? I got Surgeon Simulator with the Humble Bundle, and some of the soundtrack is surprisingly good.

As for Sonic the Hedgehog and narm, I really liked the tone that the anime OVA used. It had some nice variation between goofy and serious, and it captured the tone of the 90s games very well, even though it had nothing whatsoever to do with their plots.

The OVA is probably the best Sonic adaptation for precisely that reason.

Indeed. Makes me wonder What Could Have Been if the ova had made it as an anime which it was a pilot for. I remember the animation was rather good and the fight scenes were excellent.

Speaking as a Sonic fan, I will say that although the OVA did capture the feel and look of the games it just felt out of place to be honest. And I never understood why they kept calling Metal Sonic, Hyper Metal Sonic when there's no real difference to how he looks or why he's even called Hyper Metal Sonic in the first place.

In retrospect, they might have had more success if they'd marketed it to the US first, rather than Japan.

I know he really, really messed up. But, I wish the mods would let him come back for the thread. Really he just wants to hang out with his friends again.
