A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

The weirdest part though is that the water in her eyes looked normal. The tears only turned black after leaving her eye.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI can't imagine any reason AJ would be interested in the guy. The first thing we see him say to her is the respecting earth pony work ethic line, which even if she isn't offended by it is still sort of off putting. Also, either he just accosted her with that out of nowhere or he's been following her from the farm babbling. Then he starts asking inane questions about how many types of apple there are, steals an apple from her basket, and covers her in apple juice when he bites into it. On top of all that, she already knows one of her best friends is interested in the guy, there's no reason in the world for her to respond positively to his advances.
Well I doubt racism is much of a thing in Equestria, aside from the occasional asshole and easily cleared up misunderstandings like with Zecora, but that doesn't mean certain individuals don't occasionally do insensitive things even if it isn't intentional. Like a unicorn being oblivious to how much easier their magic makes certain tasks for example. Tenderhoof obviously meant that comment as a compliment, and AJ didn't seem to take any offense, but it was still a sort of awkward thing to say. Like saying "oh, I've always been impressed by how well you black folk have adapted to inner city life" or something.
@Dark: I didn't see it as offensive so much as "he's trying to ingratiate himself despite not knowing what he's talking about". It's just a very generic compliment that really doesn't mean much of anything. And honestly, I didn't see it as having many racial overtones either; all signs point to to the fact that earth ponies are proud of their work ethic. The problem was less that the compliment was offensive and more that he put so little thought into it.
Reaction Image Repository@Dark: The way I see it, it's sort of the equivalent to a guy hitting on a Mexican girl by telling her he likes Mexican food. That might be true, and there's nothing wrong with it, but it's a stupid way to compliment someone because you really aren't; you're implying that you're only interested in them because of their background rather than caring about them personally. His comment came across like he was only interested in AJ because she was an EP rather than because, you know, he actually liked her. I don't think it's quite that harsh though, given that he actually had seen her working. It just comes across as kind of a weak way to compliment someone.
Reaction Image RepositoryIT's the fact that he went for "Earth Pony" as opposed to like, "Farmers" or "Your". The fact that he's generalizing makes it suspect.
It's not a slur, just a generalization. A positive generalization, but even so.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.@Kegisak: That's exactly why I wouldn't really call it racist; it doesn't imply that he's looking down any particular pony race. It's sleazy and could be construed as objectification, but it's not really racist.

She's crying tears of black necromantic magic. She secretly kills foals in ritual sacrifice to gain her unnatural beauty. No, the tears aren't out of remorse, but frustration as her beauty was wasted in getting Trend's attentions.
