A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

Sure, I can agree with that Sereg - but that doesn't make him a character in the now. you could easily say the same about a background character.
Hell, people have in this fandom...
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.Obviously Sombra's stair fetish makes him a really fleshed out character.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play@Sereg: The issue is less whether or not he has characterization and whether or not said characterization is interesting. "Overly naive and trusting" is a good starting point, but if that's all there is to the character it isn't much better. The other thing is that a flaw only really counts if it actually has some sort of relevance to the story, and in this case his "overly trusting" thing is honestly kind of irrelevant. You could chop out the bit about Sunset Shimmer being his ex and the story would be exactly the same. It's an interesting tidbit of information, but the story does precisely nothing with it. He's still a flat character because the one "flaw" we have is irrelevant. It's like if it turned out that say, Twilight is really really bad at upholstery. It's a valid flaw, but useless unless there's a story where her lack of skill in that area is relevant. Even if he has a flaw he can still be flat because that's the only side of the character that we see.
Re: Spike: I think the main issue with Spike is that as a character, he's too tied to Twilight. She's the only character who feels like she has natural interactions with him. Rarity is a little better, but other than that none of the cast really seem to interact with him much on a one-on-one basis. Whenever we see him, he's either alone, with Twilight, or with the group, but none where he's just hanging out with, say, Applejack or Pinkie. The only time he does is in Spike At Your Service, where it takes an external conflict to force him into that situation.

Reaction Image RepositoryBecause we SAW what Sombra had put in place, the length's he'd gone to protect the Heart. It proved that he was smart, cunning, made some really in depth plans. And that he was, by far, the most competent villain we'd seen yet.
Flash.... he was just an empty space for Twilight to have the required crush on while having NO impact on anything.
Rarity and Applejack it looks like. Which is great, because their Tomboy and Girly Girl dynamic is hilarious.
@Sereg: I can see where you're coming from, but I just think he didn't contribute enough to the story to really justify his presence. When you can remove a character without really affecting the plot at all, you should question why they're there to begin with.
Reaction Image RepositoryRarity acting like Applejack right? Oh man, I want to see the point Tabitha's brain snapped.
So will it be more like Sisterhooves Social or Look Before You Sleep?
