A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

I assume that's directed at the hacking news. I don't know, but here's a quote from net-security.org about it.

According to Barracuda Labs researchers, the site was not compromised via malicious ads as it's often the case, but directly, and it would lead visitors via a chain of redirects to a website hosting Java exploits.

If a visitor's computer turned out to be vulnerable to them, the download of an information-stealing Trojan variant that was initially not detected by any of the AV solutions used by Virus Total.

Users who visited the site on January 10, 11, 14 and 20 are likely to have had their computers infected, so they are urged to scan their machine with one of the AV solutions that detect the malware in question.

Here's a link to the net-security post.

Of course if you still have Java enabled in your browser nowadays, you have bigger problems.

Now I'm tempted to go take a look just to see what the exploits are. I don't think I've ever seen a live Java exploit before.

Newbie here who doesn't understand what's bad about Java. Isn't it required to run a lot of online content, like Minecraft?

[up] hasbro.com was hacked and might have given you a virus if you went there recently.

"Flutterceps" makes me think of some brain-eating fungus ala The Last of Us. Infected individuals slowly devolve into a shambling mass of kindness and animal welfare.

This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...

Because Java has a very poor security record, and unlike Flash, there are very few legitimate sites that use it nowadays, so you might as well disable it.

Also a good reminder to disable your Java plugin if you haven't already.

Random question. Are Java and Javascript the same thing?

[up]I've had those before and they're awesome, so I'm thinking that either you got a bad bag, or you just fall on the "Hate it" side of the Love It or Hate It when it comes to salt and vinegar chips.

It's probably a bad bag then, because I'm definitely on the "love" side of S&V chips, especially kettle cooked chips. But these... there's gotta be something wrong with the vinegar they used or something, because this is to vinegar what vinegar is to wine. It's sour.

Random question. Are Java and Javascript the same thing?

No. They're completely different! Think of it like Turtles and Turtle Doves. They have the same name because of a marketing gimmick back in the 90s, but they're completely different langauges.
