Speaking of which. Who else is probably still going to be single on valentines day? Maybe we could have a single persons party.

I am but I don't really care. Also, apparently China has singles day in November for some reason.

I have a significant other, sorta, but he lives in Texas to my Quebec, so for all intents and purposes I'm single I guess?

Blame Chaucer, and later Victorian England. It was thanks to them that Valentine's Day was associated with romance at all. Until then, it was just a feast day commemorating the day Saint Valentine (supposedly) was martyred.

And from what I can tell, while St. Valentine is associated with love and romance, he's more specifically the patron saint of affianced couples. So by all rights the only ones allowed to get mushy on Valentine's Day are those about to get married.

I don't actually know which day Valentine's Day is. That said, I'd still like to celebrate it if I had someone to celebrate it with.

[up][up]History is actually a pretty fascinating thing. You just have to find someone who can actually make it seem more exciting than a list of dates, which is how I've often seen it taught.

@CDRW: February 14.

And yeah, history is cool when taught properly. It's just stories that really happened, after all.

List of dates. Ugh.

My favorite history teacher taught history as if they were a bunch of stories and placed very little emphasis on dates. Even in his exams, it was "arrange the following events in the correct order".

Pretty much. And even then it's still interesting as all hell, imagining people living in those times. What's fascinating is that the past is gone, it's something that once existing in a fleeting moment, and is no more. All we are left with are the artifacts and records of bygone civilizations, entire cultures and tongues vanishing into the void of time. And woe where'd that come from?

Yeah, the worst way to teach history is to just list a bunch of things that happen and have to be memorized, mainly because it defeats the purpose of learning it to begin with. The whole reason to learn history is to figure out how each historical situation develops into the next one and figure out why things happen the way they did. Learning a list of disconnected events doesn't do that at all.

Don't get me wrong, history can be cool sometimes but really it's not something I want to infest time on.

If your teacher tries to make you memorize a bunch of dates that stuff happened, they're doing it wrong. There is no better way than that to ensure that kids will absolutely not give a shit.
