A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

@Enlong: It's The Law Of Fan Jackassery, basically. It's really not any worse, it's just that the fandom has grown large enough that it has a level of overall jerkiness to humanity at large. It's just that earlier on it wasn't as visible. Before long it'll hit equilibrium.
The other thing is that early on, everybody was so struck by the novelty of being into the show at all that they wouldn't bring up the issues as often. Once that novelty wore off, people just got more open with the elements they don't like. Combine that with the fact that the past seasons have more controversial content than S1 ever did (Derpygate and Twilicorn, mostly) and it shouldn't be a surprise that it looks like people are getting more annoying.

The fact that a huge glut of fanworks for the series is porn may be a big red flag there, but the whole DWM debacle also has not helped any bit.
The sad truth is that the fandom is becoming more and more known for being affiliated with porn and the sexist attitudes that go along with such a thing, seemingly letting go of almost-if-not-all common sense and rationality.

Which is dumb, because
1. Every fandom of notable size is like that. Pokemon, Harry Potter, Homestuck, they all have pornographic fanart and stories that are utterly insane.
2. The proportion honestly isn't nearly what some people make it out to be. I remember a while back somebody did a survey of derpibooru and found that like less than 10% of the art was porn.
The only reason that it gets noticed more is because the series is for kids and therefore creating adult content for it is somehow worse, even though the pornographic content itself isn't any worse than the porn created by other fandoms.

Reaction Image RepositoryPersonally I think it's the same as any fandom, good and bad. As was said before, season 1 was so new and novel everyone was pretty much on a high and rode that buzz until season 2 came along . Which isn't bad in itself, it was just so positive at feeling at that time the flaws in soe episodes weren't as obvious and fanwork was generally a lot smaller. Also of fairly low quality by today's standards.

This, pretty much. All that's happening now is that the luster is starting to wear off. The fandom's no worse than before, it's just that the nastier parts are more visible now.
Are there any fandoms were that isn't true?
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI think the increased exposure and acceptance of the show as a good thing has lead to A)more people joining the fandom and B)more people actually giving the fandom attention. It's one thing to see a few obvious weirdos doing stuff, but when it becomes more normal, the bad stuff becomes much harder to write off, even if it is still being done by the same people originally written off as weird. Which is not to say it is weirdos doing the stuff, or that it's inherently weird that it exists, just that the people who are more likely to raise a stink about it are more likely to pay attention as it becomes larger and larger.
There's also the fact that the events of the fandom that happen to spread to other people's knowledge tends to be unfortunate. Sherlock gets the Long Hiatus, and we get Ask Molestia, for example.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes. My problem with the fandom isn't the porn {R34 affects everything, no exceptions}, it's how much the fandom has fallen and became massive jackasses over time. Nearly everyone has become really nitpicky to the point of swearing off entire episodes because of a certain thing they didn't like, and that's not even getting into the flip-floppy reactions people keep having to Alicorn Twilight. Believe me, I use to like the fandom too.

Seconding what Luminosity said. Also, even discounting the site's newness, it's just stats from a single site/source, which is not a very good sample pool.

It's Fanbase, not Fandom.
... Is it weird how the Insane Pony Thread is the one that seems sane in comparison to the rest of the internet on issues like these?

Long live Cinematech. FC:0259-0435-4987The thing is though I don't think the fandom had anywhere to fall, it's just nostalgia making it look like it was a better time for all. When really it was just so new at the time people tended to be more excitable. And nitpicky fans are a staple of any fandom, just look at doctor Who. Sure we're a unique fandom that has broken some boundries and have done some very, very good things, but at it's heart we're like everyone else.
Heck, the Homestuck thread is weirder than this. And I've seen some quotes in the Frozen thread that are quite tumblr worthy.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play@Pannic: That's only due to the fact that the sizes are comparable and the community is almost entirely internet based. The only reason that Harry Potter isn't more visible is because the fans are more present in meatspace. Bronies are 95% an internet phenomenon, which means everything is readily available for people to see, whereas less net-based fandoms don't have it out in the open so much.
Reaction Image RepositorySpeaking of the Harry Potter fandom, I remember one of the actors saying that he once saw a woman wearing nothing but a Harry Potter towel who said 'nothing gets between me and Harry Potter'. So there are definitely crazy people in any fandom.

@dan. Think you'd be up for just one episode? seems like you've studied hard and could use a break, it's only 20 minutes.
