A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules

literary masochist
Speaking of terrible movie adaptions, the World War Z film is basically the book in name only. I have no idea who the dumbass was that decided to use the rights for the book to make a film that had absolutely nothing to do with it. -_-

now that i think of it, the most recent Disney sequel i can think of is Cars 2 (apparently, i'm one of two people on the planet that enjoyed that movie).
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.MLP isn't really a remake; it's more like an entry into an existing frachise. Sort of like how the Christopher Nolan Batman movies weren't remakes of the original movies; they were their own thing. FIM is like that; it uses most of the same themes and concepts, but explores them differently and with a different set of cast members. MLP was never really intended to be a self-contained thing, so creating new installments of it is a logical progression.
As opposed to say, Robocop, which was self-contained and has no reason to require sequels or remakes aside from money-grubbing.
Reaction Image RepositoryI swear to God if they make more remakes just for money, I will stop watching movies altogether. Because every time a crappy remake is released, I stop giving a crap. When the remake of Carrie came out, I was like...
I am done with horror movies. Let me get off this horror train I am done. I don't care if they release the greatest horror movie of all time in 2 days, I won't see it because I just will not care. I don't care about word of mouth, I don't care what anyone says, if I don't get a good, ORIGINAL movie soon, I am done with movies. This past decade has been nothing but remakes, obvious money grabbing remakes that didn't have enough effort, enough dedication, or enough of anything to consider being watched. Yet, people are like,
"Let's go see it instead of waiting to come out on DVD or something!"
And whenever I tell my friends otherwise, and tell them to see something good, they're like,
"Why can't you just turn off your brain? Don't you want to enjoy something?" Well, yes, I want to enjoy something. I don't want to turn off my brain to do that. I want something that challenges me, not spoonfeed bullshit after bullshit. It's unfair, intolerable and just wants me to reach out to the movie and slap it in the face.
I want to stay as far away from that movie as possible.

Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayOkay, I've been thinking a bit more about Twilight's "No one's going to the Gala!" from "The Ticket Master" vs. Rainbow Dash's "I'm injured so now I don't have to choose either team!" from "Rainbow Falls", and I think I've figured out why Twilight wasn't being a hypocrite.
In Twilight's case, there was no obvious right answer. No matter what she chose, three or four of her friends were going to be disappointed, and Twi had no criteria to decide which friend should be snubbed. But in Dash's case, there was an obviously right choice, since Rainbow Dash had made her commitment to the Ponyville team well before the Cloudsdale team offered her a place. Dash just really, really preferred to race with Cloudsdale.
So, Twilight's refusal to choose was an attempt to eke some fairness out of a situation with no right answer, while Dash's refusal to choose was an attempt to run away from the right answer.
@Story: I have no idea about that, but the book had lots of potential for a movie adaption.
@Marcen: I think that's a little extreme. There are good and original films out there, just not remakes {Generally, at least}. If you stopped watching remakes, that would be more understandable.

I stopped watching remakes but there's just no many of them that suck! WHY make more remakes over original movies. Just take a chance. If you make a mistake, that's ok. We make mistakes. We voted for Bush Jr for a 2nd term. (I believe otherwise) But, if you don't step out of what's the popular norm, you're not going to learn, you're just going to blend with everything else. And then, people will dismiss your film for being crappy because it's like everything else. Movies based on books, sequels, remakes, prequels...oh God, don't get me started on prequels. Is this what we're going to look forward to in the future. A couple of high profile feature film mixed in with popular norm products that will dull the reception to other movies. Why? What is...I want to like movies. When I was little, I liked horror movies not because of jump scares but because there was actual thought and effort put into them. Aside from the Hobbit sequels, I have no movies to look forward to. The Batman/Superman movie I could honestly care less because I'm just not feeling superhero movies AT THE MOMENT. After The Avengers, I don't think it can be topped but that can't top the industry from trying. Now, I'm watching smaller movies. Movies that have a simple plot. Movies that have characters that aren't sexual objects or flat. That's why I would pick Punch Drunk Love over Transformers any day of the week. But, hey, if there are people out there who would prefer remakes over anything else, fine. More power to them. But, eventually, they'll wake up and realize that there may not be that much substance to what they are watching. They can mix up their viewing styles but if it's the same thing everytime, it's not going to be long before they realize that style over substance isn't always going to hold up well overtime.
https://youtu.be/_1F5HhUvFbM?si=csgwerqELcG6615q@Dark: I thought of that song during that scene. And now I'm going to link it because it's awesome:
@Meta: That's pretty much how I see it. RD's issue wasn't that she hadn't taken action so much as she was just procrastinating doing what she knew was right. In Twilight's case she wasn't doing anything because she honestly had no idea what the right decision was until the end. Her comment was basically intended to snap Dash out of it and address the issue at hand.
And now I sleep.

Money will always blind blind people and cause them to make short term profit over long term results.

One more (and more acceptable) reason people keep making remakes is because original ideas are hard to come up with after several thousand years of stories. I couldn't think of something original to save my life. And the things that are original can be... Weird to say the least.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/I guess the term money is the root of all evil is true. I think that's how it goes. We're all living in a greed filled world where people just want to treat s like little kids, even though we're adults. We have brains, we....I'm not doing this. Good night.
https://youtu.be/_1F5HhUvFbM?si=csgwerqELcG6615qthe love of money is the root of all evil, not money itself.

XP granted for befriending a giant magical spider! There's plenty of original movies out there if you look for them.

...I liked the movie of World War Z, and I'm not just saying that because I'm a zombie. I admit it was pretty different from the book, but aside from a couple of things (most obviously the fact that they used "sprinter" zombies and how Jerusalem got overrun in the film), I just saw it as the tale of one guy in the same universe as the book, rather than a straight adaptation of it. Because as much as I like the book, I think that the large-scale, post-war, jump-from-character-to-character format probably wouldn't make a terribly good movie.

In case you're not familiar with the I Robot movie, they literally took an unrelated screenplay (original title Hardwired) and slapped the book's title on it for marketing purposes. And then they released an edition of the book with the movie poster and Will Smith on the cover even though it had nothing at all to do with the book!
