@JT: As far as I saw it, randomness ensued.

@Orion: I'm completely in agreement that it is unusual the shippers were calm. No clue what caused the shippers to suppress themselves...

A movie like The Lone Ranger was only fuelled from nostalgia

Nostalgia? I thought they were mostly banking on Johny Depp.

Well no, but it did have a kid being corrupted by an evil spellbook with the goal of causing hatred and chaos to the world. That's kinda heavy for any little girls that must have watched.

And W Sd is horrific enough that I really don't think it's a kids movie.

If I was a girl, and lived in the 80s, I would have been scared by the movie...but I would have liked it eventually because it showed me something different. You can't please EVERYONE but the people you can please will see it as good in the long run. The Care Bears movie took SOME chances. I respect it for that.

Johnny Depp + Movie = (possible) Blockbuster. Johnny Depp is an actor, not a scriptwriter. Again, just because you have a bankable actor in a movie does NOT mean it will be good. Remember when people thought George Clooney would be good as Batman? We got Batman and Robin. Seth Rogen as a superhero? We got The Green Hornet. Stallone as a superhero? Judge Dredd. Don't think it's going to be hit after hit.

Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka movie

Hey, I actually liked the Willy Wonka remake.

Just to nitpick, I think you want "insightful" not "inciteful". The former means to gain insight into something. The latter means "something that incites" or riles people up.

I've noticed that Dark frequently mispells things with homophones. I pointed it out once or twice, but I stopped bothering since I figured it was just due to using a screen reader for spell checking or whatever.

/*Hugs Marcen for having the same opinion as me on Ted {Except that I think the film can burn in hell and I look forward to when Seth becomes eventually becomes obscure, but still}*tongue

But if there's one thing I disagree with you on, it's the Charlie And The Chocolate Factory movie. I actually liked that film. Your spot on about the rest of the Johnny Depp films you mentioned, though.

@Story I didn't like it, not because I grew up with the original but because it felt like another vehicle from Johnny Depp. And he played it way too...uhhh...Michael Jackson-y. It bought some sort of creepy vibe. Gene Wilder brought a weird vibe too but, he KNEW what he was doing, he knew how the character can be, a la Mad Hatter. I got how he was even when I was in the 3rd grade. I don't know what Johnny Depp was doing in the movie. He asks the kids to come to the factory, to chose which one of them would take over his job, but he doesn't seem interested in them. The story was been updated, and that interested me. Like instead of Mike just watching TV, he plays a lot of video games! Kids can relate. If you like the remake, more power to you. But, Charlie was boring, Depp didn't have much going on in terms of his character, and, despite some depth here or there, there's not much to it.

Ted was overrated. It was basically Family Guy in a live action format, with little to no cutaways. If you put this movie in animation form, it would NOT have changed a thing. Honestly, if you put that premise of Ted into a Family Guy episode, can't you see how that would play out?

I prefer the original, but the Depp version was good to. I like that it basically tried to be its own movie rather than attempting to just reproduce the original one. And it had Christopher Lee as an evil dentist, so I couldn't hate it.

It bought some sort of creepy vibe.

But Willy Wonka is supposed to be kind of creepy. The remake was actually a lot more faithful to the book, with the exception of the father subplot (admittedly that's big exception).

Also, is it bad that I keep getting Gene Wilder and Geert Wilders mixed up?

He was creepy in a different way.

I just called him Doctor Dooku.

I called him Saruman. Sorry Star Wars but LOTR was more memorable.

Christopher Lee wasn't an evil dentist. He was...just misunderstood.

Now you've got me thinking of Psychonauts.

Again, Depp's portrayal was confusing because he didn't know what to do with the character. Was he supposed to be some sort of genius pretending to be stupid. Was he trying to keep away from Wilder's portrayal and do something entirely different but didn't know how to do it so he changed it up throughout the movie. I didn't see Wilder as creepy, (screen pops up, shows tunnel scene) most of the time. But HE had a clear character. He knew what he was doing. There is a different between creepy and knowing it and being creepy and keeping the audience guessing AND the latter only in a bad way. Depp's is the bad way because he's inconsistent in his portrayal. I like how the remake took chances and some things do stand out, especially Depp's performance but not in a good way. It's more the fact that it needed to have a consistent tone.

Really the whole remakes and sequel thing that's been going on these last few years has really turned me off from seeing movies. It's been a good 4 years since I went to a theater to see a film.

Isn't it a little odd for us to be complaining about remakes in the thread for a TV series that's technically a remake?

@Marcen: Yeah, that was my main issue with it as well. It was like they weren't sure whether to make Depp a competent eccentric like in the original movie, or a just a really weird guy who didn't seem to know quite what he was doing. Wilder's Wonka gave you the sense that he was on top of things, and all the "accidents" were engineered to test the kids as they went through the factory. He came across as someone who was screwing with everyone.

Depp's version looked sort of out of his element; like he wasn't sure what to do with everyone in the factory and in the end it just felt off because it was like he never wanted them to be there at all, yet he apparently invited them in for some reason. It was split between competence and being unable to control what they were doing.

I don't see movies very often either. I've seen 3 in the last 2 months, and that's more than I usually see in 6.

Meanwhile my mom sees a new movie every 2 weeks or so.

It's been nothing BUT those and books being made into movies. It's just sickening right now. It's just an excuse for more money. And Twilight being a big phenomenon for half a decade really grind my balls. There were better movies out there but, no, let's watch a melodramatic love story about a self centered bitch with no personality who is in love with a vampire who is so bland and so unemotional that he makes David Ducovney, Gillian Anderson and Tara Reid on every drug in the world look like Academy Award winners. And, watch, in 2 decades, that's right, TWO decades, the movie studios are going to look at the Twilight series and remake it...somehow worse. Movie producers always complain that they're not making enough money, there's not enough people going to see their movies. Well, we would agree with you if you would stop giving us terrible remakes and sequels. There is a remake every 3 weeks and people are constantly suckered in to them, even if they've seen the reviews. I guess you can say that there is no such thing as bad publicity and people would go see the movie BECAUSE of how horrible it is but maybe they should spend their hard earned money watching it in the theatres and wanting their money back .The least you can do is wait for it to come out on DVD and return the movie if you don't like it. Hell, borrow the movie from a friend or the library. The movie industry actually expects us to watch their crummy movies in the theatres. No. We are not stupid. We have made some stupid mistakes before, like when we asked for more Pirates movies, but we have an actual conscience, something the industry hasn't seemed to grasp upon yet. For God's sake, just because you can make a movie, doesn't mean it will please everyone. Treat your audience with the respect they deserve (you hear that sequels, prequels, and remakes) and then we'll talk. Until then, don't write, don't call, just stop treating your audience like they're pieces of shit.

MLP:Fim is fine because there is some character development, we have gotten to know these characters, we have fun when they have fun, we feel sad when we feel sad. You know why, because in some respects, we can relate to them. Not EXACTLY like them, but we can see ourselves in a similar situation. At one point, we were like the Cutie Mark Crusaders. We didn't now what we wanted to do but eventually we did. They didn't but most of us still, or did, know how they felt. In the Mane Six, I relate to Pinkie the most because I'm a very excitable guy and I can be depressed when I don't have anyone around me and I'm alone with my thoughts. I relate to Applejack because I can pull off hard work and I try my best to be honest. No one can just relate to just ONE character, they can relate to anyone in any situation. That is why I think this show is so great. Because like the main setting of the show, this thread is like that. We can be ourselves here. We all have flaws but, you know what, we're there for each other almost everyday.
