A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

@Movie discussions: I do apologize, but I'm actually no movie buff to be honest. If a friend does go to watch a film though, I'd be all right with it. (He's actually with a fair sense of what's good and what's not, unlike me.)
I'm not exactly one to be familiar with celebrities, but if someone points out an interesting fact, I'd probably get interested, though it depends.

"Ike, you really should know the voice actors by now."
I don't have a reason to care. I don't care about any celebrities, to be honest.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/@Marston As much as I like the Dawn of the Dead remake, there's something that bugs me...the dog is undetected by the zombies, right? So WHY does the girl risk her life to save the dog? I mean, they're in a mall, aren't they? There should be a pet store...where you could get dog whistles. Just blow on it, the dog will come back and there wouldn't be any of the crap that botched their plan to get out of the mall. The whole on the whole was good, however.
The King Kong remake I wanted to like but it was a little too long...especially when they were on the boat...too f***ing long. And the cutting frames bit that made everything hard to see? Annoying. I respect the original a little more. The original has problems but the remake, while ok, has a plot that kind of stops in the middle. I know it's nitpicking but it's the kind of thing that kind of doesn't want me to reach for a 3rd viewing...unless I had a remote control to fast forward.
Once upon a time, comedy had clever wordplay, not so forced slapstick and crude humor that was happening to the characters for a good reason. Now we have shallow parodies (except Superhero Movie...it wasn't great but it was pretty funny), sex jokes that try so hard that they're painful. That's why I haven't watched many comedy movies before 1999. Because after that, it has been nothing but sex movie, after sex movie. Yes, Judd Apotow has made good comedies and so has Edgar Wright, but that's because they take chances outside of their comfort zone. I watch South Park because, even though it has dirty jokes, it is also a satire of life. It takes something from real life and spin it. And it never gets old because they do something different. NOW, comedy movies are just poop jokes and fart jokes and, they were funny at first, but no, there's no verity.
Adam Sandler I think can be funny...for when I was 8 years old. If he wants to make bettermovies, he has to grow up with his original fans! Not doing the same shit for the last decade. Less Jack and Jill, That's My Boy and Little Nicky and more Punch Drunk Love or, at least, Happy Gilmore. For God's sake, Hollywood! GIVE US SOMETHING OF SUBSTANCE!
https://youtu.be/_1F5HhUvFbM?si=csgwerqELcG6615qI think the main reason for all the sequels and remakes is that Hollywood has somehow gotten the idea that the key to success is spending as much money on each movie as possible, meaning movies have to be a record breaking blockbuster just to break even (see The Lone Ranger). And with such high stakes, they're trying to play it as safe as possible, and that means sequels, remakes, and adapations of popular franchises from other media.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play@Story Well, we're living in a new time now. We used to like blockbusters. Past term: USED to. Now, we prefer better stories, compelx character development, good characters and, an all around good time. If you want to create a blockbuster movie, fine, make sure there are things like that. Don't throw money at a project just because it is a blockbuster and you should just throw money at it. A good example of one movie that has this is Inception. Sure, there was a LOT of money that went into it. But the story was written YEARS before it was shot. The story was complex, there was a reason for some character's motivations and it wasn't totally half assed. There were people who were doing it because it was a passion project for the director. He knew what he was doing. He wanted all those years because the technology he wanted was made yet. And the effects were well worth the wait.
A movie like The Lone Ranger was only fuelled from nostalgia and that can only go so far. It went through a bad beginning and a lot of messed up production values. On top of that, the story was muddled with plot holes, the characters weren't all that interesting. And, it failed with critics and audiences. It wasn't a bad movies because of all those, it was a bad movie because it was something no one knew much about.
The Dark Knight was good because it knew the history of Batman and added on a crime noir in a way we never knew was possible when we had nothing but campy superhero movies in the 90s. Dark complex story, yes. Memorable setting, yes. And that's why a lot of people like it. Because it wasn't just another blockbuster that people went to see and complain about.
If there are any future blockbusters out there, consider this: Think about what you're doing, look over your script and know exactly what you're doing so you don't seem like you A) Doing this for the money or B) You're totally half assing it/not caring.
And speaking of not caring, no more remakes. We want to be entertained. For every Dawn of the Dead, we get 9 Arthurs and 4 Johnny Depp's Willy Wonka movie. Stop it.

https://youtu.be/_1F5HhUvFbM?si=csgwerqELcG6615q@Story: I think that hits the nail on the head. I mean, yeah, the Robocop movie will probably suck, but people will see it, so that's the kind of thing they'll finance. It's dumb, but we have to make do, I guess.
@Marston: I think it's less hypocrisy and more a factor of popularity. The Molestia blog was well known in the fandom and as noted, someone who actually worked on the show tweeted a pic from it, so there was a much greater chance of Hasbro people running into it and thinking that it was a problem. The porn game might be worse content-wise, but it's also a lot more obscure, which makes it both less likely that Hasbro will notice it and more unlikely that they'd care because again, it's fairly obscure.
@Dark: Just to nitpick, I think you want "insightful" not "inciteful". The former means to gain insight into something. The latter means "something that incites" or riles people up.
Reaction Image RepositoryAlso the Lone Ranger failed because not only did it try to invoke nostalgia, but then spat on the fans for doing so. when he gives his famous catchphrase "Hi yo, Silver!" that should be a triumphant moment, not never say that again. At least they could have pandered to the nostalgic fans and made a movie true to the character, but they squashed it with a bad script and a terrible attempt at being dark. so it doesn't even have a nostalgic audience because they crushed that too. Also the unfortunate implications for JD playing a native American character. It says something when the slightly more racist portrayals did a better job than him.

I'm getting increasingly annoyed that my laptop has only 4gb of ram. It seems like I can barely do anything, to the point where I often have to close the browser and music player to save memory.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI hate it when movies, especially remakes, try to be dark and it comes off as corny. I like dark movies but not when it's done poorly, it's embarrassing. It's like a stereotypical nerd trying to be cool but absolutely failing. It's painful to watch, embarrassing to listen to and you just want to throw it away and say, "NO!" Just be yourself and people will respect you for it.
The Robocop remake I don't really have high hopes for because of constant rewrites, actors dropping out, the fat that its been in Development Hell for all those years. I bet it's going to be one of those movies that will be like Quantom of Solace. The plot is going to be so incomprehensible, that it'll make Momento look like the 1st Care Bears movie.
Oh, and by the way, just because you have Johnny Depp in your movie, doesn't mean it's going to be good. Do you hear me sequels to Pirates, Lone Ranger, Astronaut's Wife, The Tourist, Dark Shadows, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice In Wonderland, From Hell. You can throw ALL the money in the world into the project, but if you don't have a good script, the people who gave you all that money will never forgive you.
If you're going to pander, pander to the newcomers and the old fans. And do it right. I don't know how, but if it's not needed don't force it in, isn't that right CGI TMNT movie from 2005. And that movie proved that if you do both, it will not know what it wants to be, leaving nobody satisfied in the slightest.

https://youtu.be/_1F5HhUvFbM?si=csgwerqELcG6615qHey, at least the Care Bears first movie was dark enough to give G1 a run for it's money and had some nice ham.
Seriously, what is it with 80s girls cartoon anns and being surprisingly dark? MLP's the most noticable, but cb did it as well from time to time though especially the movies and Rainbow Brite's premise and it's movie are incredibly bleak.

@Dark Yeah, but then the other movies got way too stupid. Like to the point where I wanted to turn off the movie. But, then again, they came out in the 80s, a time where things pandered to their fans but, because there wasn't much development to the characters (I'm looking at you, Transformers cartoon), nobody really cared. Nowadays, we need substance, not just mindless explosions. (I'm looking at you, Michael Bay.) And a movie that we can understand. (Insert Quantum of Solace Take That joke here)
Actually, the 1st Care Bears movie wasn't that dark to me. It was intense at times but it wasn't Neverending Story or Watership Down dark. I think we need incredibly bleak movies with dark themes. It can show that, if done right, our children can learn that it doesn't need to pander and that they can learn from what they watch, ask questions, FEEL what they should, be comfortable with what they're watching. Because in the end, when the best people in the movie business aren't around anymore, we will need to depend on another generation who we can look upon. They should do it for the art. Some times you HAVE to do it for the money so you can do it for the art. Be what you can be.
Less Michael Bay, more Christopher Nolan...
BTW, I didn't really like Ted.

@Marcen: If you want to see a couple remakes that are actually good, I suggest you check out the 2005 King Kong remake and the Dawn Of The Dead remake. They're both pretty good despite the latter almost being a completely different film then the original.
And since we're on the subject of bad movies, here's something I hate about a fair amount of modern comedy films: Movies where the people involved seem to think that all you need are crude sex jokes, swearing and pop culture references as humor with nothing else of value. All 3 of those things can work and they have been done well, but like most jokes they require EFFORT, which is something most people don't ever seem to want to put in their products {*coughcoughSethMacfarlane and anyone who makes modern parody filmscoughcough*}. I miss the days when comedy films required genuinely funny jokes and effort to be hits. I'll take National Lampoons Christmas Vacation over something like Ted any day.
