Yeah, but that's just one bad call that she recognized was bad. Like I said, the other mane cast members have done things that are just as bad or worse and we let it slide because we know we just caught them at a bad moment. I don't think we can extrapolate that Spitfire is horrible at her job based on one incident that she acknowledges wasn't her finest moment.

On a side note, Soarin was kind of an idiot. If you're an elite athlete, you should know better than to get distracted by a cheerleader and crash into something.

She didn't lie to Soarin though, he knew what was happening. He was the one who told Dash. She was being lied to, admittedly, but he knew the score.

That said, I do agree. Yeah, she shouldn't have lied about it. I just don't think it would pull her whole leadership into question, for me. I'd question the necessity of lying to Dash - and for that matter, if the fact that we would have to lie to get her on the team would make her a good teammate in the long run - but it wouldn't be enough to make me lose faith in her as a leader.

Fuck. We need an episode that doesn't make people hate her. I really like Spitfire.

@ JT: We let them slide because when they made those decisions, they weren't in leadership positions where others depended on their intelligence and moral character for their support and safety when they made them. Well, except that Applejack was during Applebuck season, which actually casts her actions there in a new light. That was incredibly irresponsible of her.

As for other issues with Spitfire, she's developing a consistent pattern of making these bad decisions. Put the cocky, backtalking sociopath in charge during Wonderbolt Academy? Watch Military Bronies React if you don't see what's wrong with that. Now we have her going behind her teammate's back to do something that should be aboveboard. She learned a lesson from Rainbow Dash in Wonderbolts Academy too, but the thing is she should never have gotten into a leadership position in the first place if she didn't already know and demonstrate knowledge of why those are bad things. These aren't complicated moral dilemmas, they're clear-cut "pull your head out of your ass, ref" bad calls.

@ Kegisak: She didn't lie to him, but she didn't exactly tell him that the reason she was doing it was to recruit someone better than him either. Imagine how it would feel to be on the receiving end of that realization.

No, that's not the solution either. Maybe one of the other Wonderbolts.

I'd have to watch Wonderbolts Academy again to know for sure, but Spitfire didn't really have the benefit of actually seeing what Lightning Dust was up to in that episode. She saw a pony who was talented, and worked hard and pushed herself to improve, which are good qualities. Most of their initial were either solo or involved LD being with the one pony who could actually keep up with her decently, too, so her actual flaws would have become more apparent when LD started working with a larger team.

Basically Spitfire's "Bad Decision" was not seeing LD do stupid stuff. Or, put another way, LD was smart enough and careful enough to not get caught. As soon as she was informed of LD's attitude, she made the obvious, good decision. though again, I'd have to see again to know for sure.

Again she was NOT going behind anypony back. Soarin knew exactly what was going on, the only thing he dion't know was who the new pony was.

RD, it might have been exaggerating, but w've already proven how just because he could fly, doesn't mean it would be a good idea for him to strain himself if there was another option.

LD, yes, but we saw more of her then Spitfire did. Going JUST by what She saw of LD, it was a decent decision, and the INSTANT she found out the sort of shit LD was up to, she kicked her ass right the fuck out.

[up]No that's right. She did not KNOW what LD was doing. Or how she acted behind her back until Dash spoke up.

She really didn't do anything that wrong besides not being completely truthful to RD, but even then, it was just an exaggeration and trying to get her to come over, but never really pressuring beyond the offer, and pointing out the advantages. Soon as RD turned her down, she was fine with that.

@ Kegisak: But she did see during the initial lineup, when LD backtalked to her. She may not have seen the sociopath part, but she had all the opportunity she needed to cotton to the fact that LD had a big head and no respect for authority.

Edit: Not to mention that not seeing her being a dick is incredibly negligent in itself. You're supposed to be monitoring those sorts of things.

@CD: No, I think you're right. The worst Spitfire did in that scenario was NOT see that LD was being a dick. What she did in this episode was clearly not the best way to go about it, but in that case she wasn't aware there was a serious problem.

Well if there's one thing RD can teach the Wonderbolts, it's how to crash at high speed without getting hurt.

Except she didn't see that as a negative attitude, and that was hardly "backtalking". To respond to a direct question with a bit of a cocky answer, given what they were going for, you'd expect the recruits to be cocky. Givne how she reacted to RD's own quip, it's likely it's actually something they like, for the recruits to be a bit cocky, sure of themselves, confident and willing to stand up like LD did. As long as they have the skill to back it up.

Yeah, Spitfire didn't make any bad decisions in WA aside from not personally watching closely enough. And honestly, as the apparent head of the academy, it's kinda unpractical to assume that she'll know all that without being told. She made the best decision with the information she had available.

And in this episode, her goal was completely understandable: You have an injured teammate who's not at 100%, you try to replace him with someone who can perform as well or better. The only bad decision she made was misrepresenting Soarin's injury to Rainbow Dash. Which isn't a bad call, but understanding her motives (wanting her team to be as good as possible), I can understand her reason for doing so, even if I don't agree with it.

On a side note, I think people really tend to read too much into the "military" aspect of Wonderbolt Academy. It's obviously supposed to be the Theme Park Version, so expecting it to resemble the real deal is a bit much.

On another side note: Applejack really must like force feeding other ponies.

@ Seraphem: No... That's just... no.

The Wonderbolts are a quasi-military organization. They are a precision flying team that requires complete trust in the skill and actions of their companions. There is absolutely no room in that sort of group for a cocky hothead. There's a reason that drill instructors come down hard and fast the instant they see that sort of thing in boot camp, and that's the same reason that real-life stunt groups don't put up with that attitude either. People like that get their teammates killed.

@ Japanese Teeth: She wasn't watching, and apparently neither were the people overseeing their training. Or else they weren't telling her. The first is understandable, the second is gross negligence.

And how was she going to see this, when LD didn't do any of it around her? Making RD injure her wing, all she knew was the RD got a bit hurt, not how, and RD didn't complain about it or explain. So why would she think it was in anyway LD's fault?

Hell most of he actions were pretty justified if looked at from Spitfire's position, when all she sees IS the action, and it's what she would expect, her and RD pushing themselves harder then the rest. She even compliments them on the idea for a tornado. The issue was her attitude, her not giving a single fuck about anypony but herself, and shrugging off nearly KILLING other ponies a nothing. Spitfire never had a chance to see that part of her, because around her, LD acted like expected, cocky, sure of herself, yeah, but those a qualities you'd expect in someone good enough for the Wonderbolts.

Everypony knows that you can be the best, the fastest, the strongest and the bravest. But, if you do not care about the safety of others...you're not a true Wonderbolt.
