A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

Turning 21 next month, the few relationships I've had have been online, and now my parents refuse to let me have another one online while I live under their roof. Which annoys the hell out of me. I kinda miss having a girlfriend. Someone to just be silly and lovey-dovey and have fun with. You know what I mean?

That's a bullshit rule and you should defy it for how much you can. I met Rose online, there is NOTHING inherently wrong with online dating.

I remember reading that Japan has a problem in that lots of people dislike the idea of relationships so much that the population size is actually decreasing over there due to the young adults just not getting together. It wouldn't surprise me if the problem spreads to other countries, too.

@Luminosity: Really? where I am, most people complain about not having a relationship. Course, I'm a game tester in a company that will hire literally anyone, so you can imagine the type we get...

But, my family had apparently begun to assume I just wasn't interested in sex or dating until I came out. Or at least, generally - in my aunts words, "I assumed you just sort of looked on the whole thing with a sort of amused detachment".

And yeah, online relationships are fine. Hell, if it's online your parents don't even have to know about it, let alone approve of it.

[up]Given Japan's population density, that may not be a bad thing...

I've been on all of half a dozen dates in my life and have never been in a serious romantic relationship myself. And I'm fine with it, honestly. I mean, if I met the right girl it would be great, but it's not like I need to have a girlfriend or anything.

@Lum: I think what he means is that media in general is really big on pushing the idea that "success" is supposed to include a romantic relationship; it's why the hero nearly always gets the girl whenever a story is supposed to have a happy ending. It's like they aren't aware that it's possible to have a perfectly fulfilling life without being involved in a romance.

Also, I find in incredibly amusing that despite my utter lack of romantic experience, the shipfic I'm writing is apparently spot-on in regard to what a relationship can look like. I've had multiple people assume that I'm married or in a long-term relationship based solely on how I treated the subject in the story. I still have no clue how I managed that.

Really? where I am, most people complain about not having a relationship. Course, I'm a game tester in a company that will hire literally anyone, so you can imagine the type we get...

And where I am(and by that I mean the part of internet I'm usually found in, not just my IRL surroundings) there is nothing but dismiss and hate on relationships. Among the circle of friends I only had like two friends who had a relationship, and one of them was stuck with a clingy frigid hypocritical posessive, for lack of a better word, twat.

Japan is more of a complicated issue. Falling birth rates aren't a good thing even for overpopulation. It means increasing elderly and not enough work age people to support them, which in turn means the economy gets to be fucked instead of the people who don't want to.

To be honest, I've gone on long enough without having any interest in being in a relationship at all that I'm starting to think I'm outright asexual...

My mom believes everyone I talk to online that she doesn't know personally is either a pedophile or a police officer working undercover who thinks I'M a pedophile.

I feel like I have the right to make my own decisions, and if she turns out to be right, my own mistakes as well. But she doesn't give a shit. And I don't wanna find out what she'll do if I start another relationship.

Also... hiding things from my mom is very hard to do. She can tell when I'm lying better than anyone else in the family.

@marcen From my Uni studies, the world being less crowded probably a good thing, at least if it spreads to other countries as well, considering that the human population size is likely to reach unsustainable levels in about 200 years (Though this is a very rough estimate) if we don't implement some form of control, and most forms of control are rather... objectionable...

EDIT: Luminosity does bring up the down side to this.

@ Kegisak: The population density could stand to go down, but the way things are in Japan, they're looking at a full-on socio-economic crisis as their working population reaches retirement and the burden of their care falls onto the much smaller population of young workers.

Yep. Of course something similar is going to happen in Europe, China, and eventually the USA. In the USA it's been delayed because of immigration, but it is a concern everywhere.

It depends on culture. Japan is a very traditionalist one, even pulling off a mostly secular society with no clear dominance of any particular religion, it still has incredibly repressive traditions. The fact that Japan has this as a national problem is said traditions finally crushing under their own weight. I don't think anything this rampant will happen elsewhere.

[down][down] What you said.

@Ike You can stand up for yourself. Even when you find the right person. If you feel happy with your significant other, no one has the right to take away that. No one.

@Coolio Well...I'm not going to do the deed until I'm married.

Surprisingly, no one in my family has mentioned anything about forcing me to head into a relationship. Once in a while, my aunt asks me but its mostly in jest.

@ Storyyeller: Japan has special social structures that make it much worse, though. Social structures that make it so the under-available young workers can't get pay that is comparable to their demand, and force them to work nightmarish hours just to be able to take care of themselves and their family. That of course contributes to the pressure to not pursue relationships, because they're just another time and financial burden on top of everything else.
