A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

No Pinkie was, simply Pinkie. The same character she always has been and IS.
And count on Mio to find something to be unhappy with. Was wondering when someone would.
Really this whole episode was just so much fun, so many little gags, little things...
This so needs to go in the reaction image bank.

Also, is this actually a stealth Applejack episode?
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectS Pinkie being an Apple is a Shrug of God. The episode is interesing/ I like the genealogy bits
@nomuru: So it's a cross-dressing voice? I just thought she sounded like a sassy black lady!
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectIt turned out to be more about AJ, anyway. She did need more characterization besides 'stubborn'.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectEh, I'm kind of inclined to agree with Mio. While she wasn't as bad as she has been in the past, she still didn't really... act and react in the way that a sapient creature would? She was just kind of there for the proceedings. More of a conflict than a character, really.
She has had good episodes where she's been a real, and quite interesting, character. Baby Cakes, Party of One, etc. Here, though... eh. I didn't find her annoying, but I didn't find her much at all. I enjoyed it for the Apple Family, myself.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.I didn't really see Pinkie as being very OOC; in fact it was a nice contrast with the Apple Family. They're overly concerned with trying to make a good impression on her and making sure that the trip goes perfectly, while Pinkie is more concerned with enjoying their company and making the trip fun, which is exactly what someone like her would do in that situation. That was the point of the whole episode; the importance of family isn't being related by blood, it's being able to enjoy each others' company. The fact that Pinkie (who may or may not be related to them) was able to do that while the blood relatives had trouble was a demonstration of that, which is one of the reasons I think this episode worked really well.
I can understand people who don't care for her personality liking her in this episode that much, but I do think that her actions were perfectly believable.

Reaction Image RepositoryWell that's hardly surprising.
I suppose you can say it's her view on things, but when her view on things is "Everything is totally alright, all the time, and I'm fantastic even though Waterfall/family falling out possibly caused by my presence/vague monster" she comes off as less quirky and more either deficient, or outright nuts. Which I suppose is a character, but whether or not it's a good one...
If she's kept like that in the background, whatever, I'm fine with it. She's there for jokes. In focus, I'd prefer her to be a bit more human. As it were.
I mean don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the episode and Pinkie was fun to watch, but still.

Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.I do think a brief line by Pinkie, say in the middle of the episode, with her saying she doesn't get to go back to the rock farm a lot, or do trips with the Cakes given how typically pretty busy with Sugarcube Corner, and as a result she's enjoying the chance to have a nice vacation with family would both give her a bit more depth and have the guilty Apples double down on trying to appear harmonious.

Eh, it's kind of always been an aspect of Pinkie's character that she gets much more shaken up by personal issues than external threats. Whenever something that scares the rest of the cast shows up, she's always the one who's least likely to freak out about it. Heck, it goes back to the pilot episodes: her coping mechanism for dealing with fear is to try to laugh at it. They probably could have treated it with a bit more depth, but I felt like it perfectly matched the tone of the episode. There was never any real danger; even stuff like the cave and the waterfall was pretty blatantly played for laughs and more aggravating than actually dangerous.
Granted, I do think that it would be interesting to have an episode that focuses more on Pinkie's difficulty in being serious next to the rest of the group, but I think that on the whole this episode was too lighthearted for it.

Reaction Image Repository@Seraphem: Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree.
@J Teeth: I never say her as being OOC so much as I dislike when she is portrayed in this fashion.

Yeah, I can understand that, even if I don't quite agree with it. I thought the episode did a better job of making her quirky rather than outright oblivious like some episodes I could mention.
Yeah, but even then you'd think the Apple Family fighting would have gotten to her a little. She has demonstrated a tendency to take on blame for infighting, or show insecurity when people are distant/unhappy.

If Pinkie is an Apple, that means Applejack is a Pie. Which means she is allowed in on the family secret.
Pinkie doesn't seem to mind what goes on in the thread.
Also, Pinkie: "Welcome to the Internet. I will be your guide."
No, Derpy, that's the Rosaceae family you're thinking of.
Apple Bloom is more surprised than anything.
Genealogy is so fascinating!
That head bob.
