A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

The Macbooks have an incredibly fast "standard" solid-state drive if you can afford that option.

I'm looking to do 40k inspired art to possibly get noticed by GW one day and they have high standards so, I need good tools. tongue

But that's not for here. Oh and I should be studying. Test season after all.

I recommend GIMP or Paint.net, or if you can find the (released) universal CD Key and an installer, Photoshop CS 2 (which Adobe accidentally publicly released a 'universal' CD Key for and never took it back).

I have no idea how ipads are for drawing. I just know that P Cs tend to have wider compatibility with stuff, which is more useful for me.

iPads aren't that good for drawing unless you got one of those precision tablet pens, also their chipset will always be slower than a good desktop with all the bells and whistles.

The way I look at it, a tablet is practically a sketch book, and that's important imo. Trying to use a drawing tablet linked to a pc looks very difficult to me. But if the software sucks then what's the point.

[up][up]

Are the pens expensive? Also does that mean they lag?

I'm pretty sure most professional artists have drawing tablets linked to a computer rather than drawing straight onto a tablet computer, but I'm no art expert.

Maybe a cheap pc with a tablet is best.

It's a good way to practice, at least. Using a tablet and drawing on paper are two very different things, in my experience - a more expensive tablet will be more responsive and can lead to a better result, depending - a friend of mine had a lot of trouble with standard tablet, but he actually draws really well on a draw-on-the-screen style tablet, which are typically in the range of 3-400 + dollars a pop.

The thing is, if you're doing it for practice a better tablet simply might not be worth the investment. If you're working on a professional portfolio, don't be afraid to go high-end, but for what amounts to hobby work? A cheap one will do you fine.

I got one of the slightly old Wacom Bamboo pen tablets. Still a little sad they ditched the Bamboo branding and made them all Intuos.

Well, mobile devices will always be slower at working/loading/saving than a well-built desktop, especially for intensive image editing.

[up]Don't knock it, a good stack of quality cartridge paper and a decent pencil can goa good way.

Wow, I just noticed, Suri's voiced by Tabby, giveing her an even bigger foil role to Rarity. And Prim Hemline is voiced by Ashly Ball. Who knew she could do a passable accent like that? It says something about the voice talent that only the porter, the driver, and one or two other background stallions were the only ones with voices not done by the Mane Six actors.

Anyone going to a college that's doing Campus Movie Fest? I've heard that they give you a free macbook for participating and it's going on right now.

I'm tempted to try and I don't even want a macbook that much.

I was surprised that Prim Hemline was voiced by Ashleigh. I was equally surprised that the Hinny of the Hills pony was voiced by Andrea. It sounds nothing like her usual, child-like voice. She's really belting it out there.

On the topic of laptops and tablets, I'm considering getting a Mac because I've heard nothing good about windows 8. I don't see the appeal of tablets, especially the "mini" ones where you might as well use a smartphone instead.
