A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

It's more like a Fluttershy episode.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayFinally getting a chance to watch the episode. Applejack really likes her job. Also, "heck" is probably the strongest profanity on the show thus far.
Holy crap that is a big apple. Also, Fluttershy is apparently capable of talking to animals.

Reaction Image RepositoryOne thing I have to ask is what exactly did the spell do to the vampire bats? Did it take away their hunger? Make them not like apples? Completely take away their desire to eat?
Depending on what it did Twilight my very well have condemned those bats to a slow and painful death by starvation. Thankfully we had wacky body alteration to distract us from that piece of possible tragedy.
Reading the trope page for this episode made me realize something. This is the third time Pinkie has been afraid of another pony/equine eating her! The first time is with Zecora, the second was with Luna and the third was in this episode. Which is hilariously ironic to me given the whole Cupcakes phenomenon turning Pinkie herself into a cannibal. Plus vampires don't usually eat people in the way that a predator eats a prey animal, they just drain people's blood.

Except that Earth ponies have been demonstrated to be able to grow fruit bearing trees from nothing in under a year.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayReally. I just don't get why you're arguing so much.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlaySee, now if they had used THAT it would have made sense for them to go with that ending. Something about how now the bats wouldn't be able to eat ANYTHING and needed to be reversed or they would starve. That would have made sense, but as shown, there was no reason to reverse the spell in the first place.
Their plan worked, it was just he little snag of Fluttershy getting caught in the blow back, an issue they solved. I was actually hoping/thinking they would go with that cuase, it would have made much more sense.
She's been able to do that ever since dropping out of Cloudsdale.
No that comment was directed at Sera, but I was quoting you for agreement. Sorry for the confusion.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI just want to point out between Fluttershy and AJ, Applejack is the one who actually has experience dealing with these things. Fluttershy may very well be right that they have beneficial properties, but AJ knows that if the vampire bats eat every apple in the orchard, the trouble outweighs the benefits.
Then again, I'm only halfway through, so we'll see.
Reaction Image RepositoryThey apparently couldn't change just part of the spell. They had to reverse the whole thing.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayBecause the episode ended with a pretty large logical flaw that came out of nowhere. Nothing was shown in the episode to prove Fluttershy was right, nor that AJ's solution was in any way only a 'short term' solution or had issues. The only down side was Flutterbat, and that was a side effect which they were able to fix. The episode did nothing at all to prove that letting the bats stay was better in the long run, so them suddenly all knowing this comes out of nowhere and makes no sense.
And if that was the case, they still didn't show any reason keeping them was suddenly alright, rather then moving on to plan b to just get rid of them. They didn't explain WHY the rest of the mane 6 and especially AJ, changed their mind.

I guess I just trust Fluttershy more than the other 5 where it comes to animals. If we accept the idea that she knows what she was talking about, then that explains the short term part of the ending.
But you don't accept that, which explains the rift here. Fine.

I have a message from another time...Phew, I'm getting to this one late.
- The shines in AJ's eyes are shaped like apples. Nice touch.
- Is it my new speakers, or does AJ's voice sound slightly different?
- Appleloosa State Fair... Appleloosa is its own state? Equestria has states?
- Oh my, AJ and Fluttershy going head to head over vermin? Why didn't I ever think of that plot?
- Holy cow, did AJ just say "sin?" Incoming flood of theological headcanons and debates in 3... 2...
- Okay, if someone doesn't put out a full rendition of "Fruit Bat Round-Up" by the next week, I'm going to be seriously disappoint.
- Heh, Rainbow's cider obsession. I love continuity jokes. XD
- Okay, so that line pretty much guarantees that Granny Smith is going to show up by the end of the episode to take Fluttershy's side.
- Well, Twilight, you could cast that spell you used on the parasprites again. The Apples can rebuild their barn again a lot faster than they can grow a whole new crop of apples.
- "I found it in 'Tampering With Nature for Fun and Profit: Volume 3'! I wonder why there was never a volume 4...."
- "Won't somepony please think of the cider?!" XD
- That little samba riff when Pinkie was putting on the apple hat was a nice touch.
- I'm just going to assume Rarity has an entire closet of those hazmat suits for any time she needs to clean her house.
- Nice animation on the bat licking the juice off her visor there.
- The bats' ears make me think of moth antennae.
- Okay, so how did this backfire? Tey're going to start sucking... hmm... blood's too obvious, and probably wouldn't make it past the censors on a show with this target demographic...
- lolspike.
- Oh, I see. So now Fluttershy is going to be the one craving the sweet, sweet juices of AJ's apples.
- So... what are the bats eating now, if not the apples?
- Pony signals and blinded AJ. XD
- Pinkie must have been bitten by the Mane-iac last week. She's exhibiting signs of prehensile hair.
- Oh no! Flutters has given in to the juicelust!
- I like "Flutterpire" better.
- Oh god, the hair drill. XD I look forward to the inevitable Gurren Lagann jokes.
- Magic computer display. I want one.
- I really like Flutterbat's design.
- Flutterbat has a reflection? I call foul! Also, I jut noticed that her cutie mark turned into pink bats. Dear god, that's adorable.
- That exchange between Pinkie and Flutters was priceless.
- ...but not for several years, until the trees grown from the seeds spit out by the bats are actually mature enough to bear fruit.
- Goddammit, Pinkie. XD
- Huh. So I was wrong about Granny Smith.
Well, that was excellent. Easily in the top ranked episodes of this season for me. And is it just me, or was Flutterbat actually cuter than normal Fluttershy?
Even IF you accept that she is right, we're given no reason for AJ to have changed her mind. Nothing new was learned. Fluttershy said the exact same thing at the start. And we learned no new information to corroborate or explain it. nothing proving the gain would be worth the rather large loss. Yet suddenly everypony agrees with her, despite there being no reason for them to now that didn't exist at the very start.
There was no reason in the story for them to change their minds like that, and I don't see how AJ's "Get them the buck out of the fields" was a short term solution. Last time they did that, the bats didn't come back for several decades.
The story simply wants us to accept Fluttershy as being right, without providing a single scrap of evidence that she is. not even an explanation on HOW they made the trees better.

I mean worse than usual.
