A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

Pegasi.. Or Pegasusususususes if you are a certain historical pony. Have flight, and can control the weather to some degree. Mostly through being able to interact with clouds.
unicorns have magic. All off them have basic TK, though we see very very few that can lift more with their magic then they could with their body. And other spells, but they tend to be very limited in what other magic they could use with Twilight being an exception and being extremely versatile.
Earth Ponies, have greater natural strength and durability, have a special connection to the earth, well ground, which lets them basically cause plants to grow faster and better. And have an easier time growing food or magic plants, to the point that they can make plants grow when nopony else could. They also, according to a few hints we'vfe gotten, are more resistant to corruption. Well, like outside, The One Ring type things, think Hobbits. only able to buck you across the horizon if you piss them off.
Alicorns, are a blending of all three. unicorn magic, Pegasi flight and weather control, and Earth Pony strength and "pure heart".
Crystal and Bat ponies, well saying more would be a spoiler. Though we only ever see Bat ponies once, and only have Word Of God that they are indeed a separate pony race, and not just ordinary pegasi with their wings altered.
Alicorns are basically a combination of the three races, like Princess Celestia. Changelings are a race of emotion eating insect like quadraped shapeshifters that may or may not be related to ponies. Batponies I don't think were ever confirmed in show, so they may not even be a thing. Crystal ponies are the inhabitants of the isolated crystal kingdom. They may be a seperate race or may just be earth ponies who were transformed by exposure to the crystal heart.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayWell we only have a sample size of 1, but Zecora seems to basically be Yoda with potion making skills.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayEarth ponies grow things, mainly, and they tend to be tougher and more durable than the other races. That last bit is either Fanon or Word of God, I can't remember which.
It's somewhat unclear whether crystal ponies are an actual species, or just a superficial condition any pony can acquire. I lean toward the latter, personally.
Bat ponies have only appeared once, as far as I recall. They're basically pegasi with bat wings instead of bird wings, and there's some argument as to whether they're a species or just some kind of spell.
Sea ponies have never appeared in this series. They were a thing in previous generations, and there's been lots of fan speculation that they could show up at some point in this one, but so far there has been no indication of this in the show itself.
There are also zebras, who for all intents and purposes are earth ponies. At least, the only one we've met so far has been. Now there's a question: do you guys think there could be unibras and pegabras back in Zecora's homeland?
Oh, you'll be so dissapointed then, near the end of season 3. And AJ and Pinkie are obviously just normal Earth ponies, meaning THEY CONTROL THE EARTH ELEMENT!
Heh heh, Zebra-corn.

Dakota's blog An odd agent of justiceNew headcanon: Zecora is actually an alibra princess in disguise. She abdicated her throne, leaving her younger siblings in charge, in order to travel the world after getting sick of ruling for the last thousand years. Celestia is fully aware of this, which is one reason she chose Ponyville as the location for the Summer Sun Celebration and Twilight's new home, in order to eventually put them in contact with each other and give Twilight another mentor.
I think Zebras are a seperate species, so they don't have the same subspecies as ponies. After all you can hardly expect there to be Uniminotaurs and stuff like that either.
As for Earth ponies, plant powers are canon, but I don't think their toughness has been confirmed. Seaponies apparently appeared in the EU but no mention in the show yet.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayWell no, not uniminotaurs. But zebras are much closer to being ponies than any other species we've seen so far.
I mean, c'mon. Unibra.
◊ Dig it.
It just doesn't make sense. If there are Zebra subspecies, they're probably not analgous to the pony ones.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayThat would require her to become a pony first. Also, what card game?
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayThere's an episode tomorrow? Oh no, I probably won't be able to see it for ages since we'll be traveling again. Why couldn't this have been one of the weeks with no episode?
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play

well, it's all magic, just differently applied. Unicorns are like mages with a few secondary powers but mostly restricted to one ability, pegasi can fly and manipulate the weather, and earth ponies are generally tougher and have some degreee of control over plant growth, but as to how much is still unclear.
