A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

Let me see if I can give a slightly more objective overview to our guest. :P
- Animation. The show is bright and colorful, and characters move fluidly and naturally. It's just plain nice to look at.
- Voice acting. The main cast is comprised of several veteran voice actors, including the omnipresent Tara Strong, who give the characters, well, lots of character through their voice work.
- Plot. The show is primarily episodic with one or two two-parters per season, though there are recurring themes. Individual episodes are typically fantasy adventures, Slice of Life stories, or a mix of the two. The basic plot of the series is that the main character, Twilight Sparkle, is on a mission to learn about friendship, and report her findings to her teacher/ruler. Most episodes carry an Aesop that is spelled out at the end, but they're only infrequently Anvilicious, and the format changes over time to make them less common overall. Despite this, one of the most common praises for the show is that it tends to eschew stereotypical "girl show" plots like crushes on boys or slumber parties, or manages to present them in interesting ways for a wider audience.
- Characters. The series starts out with a core cast of seven characters with several recurring supporting characters. This expands over the course of the show, elevating supporting characters to the main cast and introducing more supporting characters. The seven main characters are easily identified as different character archetypes such as the nerd, jock, shy one, etc., but are not solely defined by those roles, and quickly grow beyond them. Similar to how, say, Sokka in ATLA fits into the comic relief character archetype, but quickly grows beyond being another mere Butt-Monkey.
I think that should be a good primer. I hope you enjoy what you see while you're watching the actual show, and welcome to the thread!

It is a really high-quality show.
On a more random note, been playing through the Metal Gear Solid games. Can I just say that picturing Twilight Sparkle saying this never fails to crack me up?
I've never actually rewatched MMDW. I wonder if it will be as good as I remember. Glad you agree about Castle Maneia. I think it's the best of season 4 so far.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play-reads through the pages he missed-
Welcome new guy!
Where the heck does the stereotype of old MLP having teaparties even come from? It's probably a case of Never Live It Down, or Older Then They Think, there were 2 teaparties in generation 3, and that's it. Sorry, but I hear that one a lot and it sort of bugs me.
@Dark that's just the typical "Looks girly so must be full of girly and for girls only" assumption that haters still impose on current MLP as well.
In my day, Sailor Moon used to get such flak from kids I knew, who hadn't hit puberty yet and thus couldn't recognize the obviously sexual transformations.
Whoops, that edit took way too long to get out.
@dark: I think it actually comes from little girls' toy commercials in general, particularly from the 80s and 90s, rather than from older MLP specifically. The kinds of commercials with soft music, lots of pink, and little girls in pretty dresses playing with their doll houses, baby dolls, etc., that ran alongside boys' toy commercials full of guitar riffs, explosions, and guns. They beat an association between little girls and tea parties into all ours heads until they turned into synonyms, so any show aimed at little girls therefore translated into "tea party show" in our minds. It's no like any of us were actually watching this stuff before passing judgment on it, after all. Unless, of course, we were watching it because it was our sister's turn to control the TV, in which case we were watching with our resentment and Confirmation Bias filters turned all the way up to full.
Just search for the post that comes out when the episode airs.

I thought it was Bridle gossip or the "Pinkie sense" ep.
Yes, the fire one. The one that you feel less embarassed to take to a friend's home.

All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.

MMDW is an episode I actually go back to rewatch, up there with Castle Mane-ia.
