A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

Well I didn't want to jinx it by talking about it before it was even started.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI think it could work eventually, emphasis on eventually. he's gonna grow up at some point.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/There is a trope for that, but I can't remember the name. It's still incredibly creepy.
Edit: Found the trope. It's Wife Husbandry.
Double Edit: Okay, it's not Wife Husbandry, but it has lots of the same earmarks.

Slight image dump incoming:
- Secret santaing an OC
- Non-pony what? (figured the animation fans in here might still appreciate it, though)
- Full ink version of my Dash-Mew-Evee graphite
from a bit back
I'm fairly neutral to the pairing. I can understand how some people might be bothered by it (because of their age difference and species difference) but Spike's developmental stage, mentally and emotionally, is in Vague Age range, particularly because he's not a pony, so it's a little different than Rarity being in a romantic relationship with a young pony colt. Not to mention we have no idea when dragons reach their equivalent of puberty and whether or not it's different from the greed-induced growth portrayed in Secret Of My Excess. Plus pony culture might have different standard for considering when someone counts as an adult. Getting a cutie mark may be a sign of "growing up" but there are obviously ponies who have their cutie marks who are treated as still being foals, which complicates the matter. Basically, modern American human standards of what is considered to be legal age to have a romantic relationship don't necessarily apply here, nor do they have to.
While it's an unrequited love, I do think that Spike's love of Rarity tends to bring out his more generous side (which would fit Rarity's element!), such as the scene in Secret of My Excess where being reminded of his act of selfless generosity brought him back to normal. I think that he has some interesting parallels with Rarity as well, particularly in that both of them have internal conflicts in their personalities when it comes to being generous vs. being selfish, especially when it comes to gems! And while Rarity doesn't necessarily see Spike as a romantic partner, she does care about him as a friend, given that she's probably the one of the Mane 6 that he's closest to, after Twilight, of course.
Well it has some standards on age("This one's too young, this one's too old"), but not sure how they apply on dragons. It's a weird enough case to just let it be.
To me, it's just a typical pointless unrequited love, and those subplots annoy me to no end. But this one is infrequent enough compared to many others for me to ignore it.
Which makes him a vain shallow bastard
Seriously though this is supported by that one time Twilight's mane looked like Rarity's (as a side effect of something else, but I forgot what it was)

That was in Cutie Pox. Also the fact that he was attracted to Rarity immediately upon seeing her.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayConsidering the fact that the show itself has tons of Spike/Rarity ship tease, I can't really see it as being all that creepy to begin with. It's not a favorite pairing of mine {I prefer Rarijack and Spike/Sweetie Belle}, but I like it enough at least.
I also wouldn't say that Spike's crush is just based on looks, because if Secret Of My Excess and The Nightmare Moon arc in the comics are any indication he does seem to genuinely love her.

We could use... Dewey Decimal.
