A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

First Contact is actually very similar to Romance in the way it pans out. Instead of two people exploring each other's personalities, habits, and so forth to find out if they're compatible, it's two groups of people. Just like with romance stories, the best First Contact stories are ones that have a strong reason not to get together built into the premise. Then, if they overcome that, they need a strong reason not to stay together; something that naturally arises out of their interactions. Arrow's last update actually just had Twilight let something important slip to the main charcter, and I'm hoping it'll prove a good source of conflict. The most important thing is to bring the two groups together without letting them get entirely comfortable with each other, and never stop exploring the ways their behaviors mix with each other. First Contact is all about the thrill of discovery, and there's no reason to say that just because you've gotten past the obvious hurdles, there isn't still more to explore.
Man, Article2 really needs a proofreader.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayOne of the biggest issues that First Contact stories have is that the First Contact conflicts are almost always resolved before the external conflict, and that leads to the feeling that the story has lost its thread and become bloated.
It's just a security measure I think. You can probably turn it off.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play@Ike: Someone pull out the dictionary to pummel ya with figuratively?
Anywho, I apologize for not posting until now, but had a happy holiday on the most part. If only I could somehow have managed to earn a plushie of a pony... Ah well...
-whistles innocently as he sits down- Anything exciting that anyone procured?
No. I just got the worst letter combinations.
I had the letter Z starting at the second turn.
And I could never use it. Every time I thought I had a chance, someone else made a word where I would've used it.
And then I was told that any letters you DON'T use count AGAINST your score at the end of the game.
BULLSHIT.
It's like chess. I hate it because it makes me feel stupid. And I'm NOT stupid. I started college at SIXTEEN. But I have no idea how to play chess. Meanwhile, my dad DROPPED OUT OF HIGHSCHOOL and has managed to beat me at chess in under 5 moves. And I HATE IT.

Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play@CDRW: We went out for lunch at a little café in Ponyville. I was a bit worried that I made a fool of myself after butchering the pronunciations of the foreign words on the menu, but it turns out Cloudchaser didn't know how to pronounce them, either.
We ended up asking the waiter to pronounce the names for us.
Presumably he used Scholar's Mate on you. It's a common trick to beat beginners quickly, but it's trivial to defeat once you've seen it. All you have to do is bring your kingside knight out before they move out their queen and bishop. Or if they're already in position, you can block it by moving your pawn up, but that's less desireable since you'll be down a pawn and in a less favorable position. But if you know what you're doing you can really punish them.

That is something I've been wondering. How do you hold the story together after the first contact stuff is done? There needs to be some sort of other plot or threat I guess.
