A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

The writing, while would probably be ok in a typical comic book game, again fails to live up to previous superior Arkham games. Arkham Asylum, with its beautiful combination of story and gameplay on, say, Scarecrow sections. And Arkham City, being the best "Joker dies" story out there. But this, this really fails to bring a new perspective, doesn't exploit anything interesting, plays everything incredibly safe to the point of killing its own message of "your villains define you" by barely using the villains that would define Batman.
He's a game developer, so I assume he does.
Anyway, I think the appeal of indie games is that they are free to be different and innovative. I've gotten the impression that AAA is mostly devoted to a 'cinematic' experience nowadays, which massively expensive HD graphics everywhere and gameplay that just consists of herding you to one cinematic set piece after another. For the price of one AAA game, you can buy a dozen cheaper games, that will actually run on a low end computer and are usually more fun
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayThat reminds me. I need to go finish Braid. It's surprisingly hard. I've already had to consult a walkthrough something like 5 times. The puzzle design reminds me of the approach I took in designing Pickory, but I guess now I know what it's like to be on the other end.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI do agree they didn't utilize the villains as well as they could, but the ones they did use well (namely, Bane and Black Mask/Joker), were very interesting. For example, the bit where Bane infiltrates the Batcave, briefly killing Alfred and nearly causing Bruce to put up his cape for good, I really enjoyed.
That said, the "your villains define you" tagline that they used when advertising the game was, IMO, a bit misleading. To me, the story was less about Batman's first encounter with his rogues gallery, and more about how Batman learns that he has to accept the help of others if he wants to have any chance of cleansing Gotham.
I understand where you're coming from. I was also a bit disappointed that Joker was Black Mask all along, since I think he could have still been an interesting villain on his own, and I also wish they would just make a Batman story without Joker as the central antagonist. However, considering the game on its own, I thought the guy was still plenty entertaining, even if I was hoping for something different.
And Batman's unwillingness to kill is kind of central to his character. Considering this was a prequel, I doubt they could have gotten away with not at least referencing it.
Whenever batman comes up, I'm reminded of Condottiera.
Anyway, I recently watched part of a Let's Play of Ryse, and I think it epitomizes the problem. At one point the action stops while a beautiful fireball flies overhead so you can watch it. It's like the game is relying on HD prescripted sequences for its appeal like a movie. But I can't immagine what a fireball is supposed to add to gameplay.

@Luminosity: I'm going to have to disagree with you there. I thought Arkham Origin's story was one of its stronger points. Yes, the boss fights and gameplay in general weren't as good as the previous games, the multiplayer mode is unnecessary, and it was buggy as all hell when it was first released, but I thought the writing was well-done.
