A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules

I've played Devil Children, which is kinda like SMT-lite?
At the very least, I'm aware of the fundamental mechanics of the games and the general ideas behind them - though as I understand the main series is much darker than P4(and likely Devil Children too, since that was, well, for kids), I'm likely a bit foggy on the general themes of the series, which for a series like SMT is fairly important. But I'd be able to break down the hows and why's of the mechanical side, if nothing else.

Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.yeah, things are starting to wind down a bit.
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.Hi my ponies? What's with the new pony? Why's Star so nervous?
https://youtu.be/_1F5HhUvFbM?si=csgwerqELcG6615qWell, my idea is basically to do a Darker and Edgier Pokemon story, influenced by the tone and story of the SMT games. And, despite the number of Pokemon stories out there... I really don't think that's been done before. Or at least not like this.
The basic premise is a computer genius figures out a way to bring a program to life, resulting in Porygon's creation. From there, the program is tweaked and it turns out it can be used to summon hundreds of other monsters. Monsters which, for the most part, are beyond human control. The Pokedex entries from the games are taken seriously instead of being hyperbole. Pokemon can actually fly as fast as jet planes, create black holes at will, survive massive explosions, pollute the environment with their very presence, etc. Chaos and destruction on a global scale occurs. Half of earth's native organisms are wiped out within a year.
The world's most technologically advanced nations join forces to find a way to fight these monsters. The best they can do is capture them and control them with Pokeballs, and anyone who gets even one Pokeball becomes a major power. Doesn't matter what they catch with it- even a Rattata can destroy buildings alone.
Then the legendaries arrive. This leads to a war between them, those who want to preserve the old world order, and those who want to claim power for themselves.
The main character is a teenager who gets a Pokeball smuggled out of a military base, containing the first Pokemon that was created. The story follows him as he tries to survive, and later thrive, in a world of monsters.
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/The problem is that if the Pokedex entries were taken literally, it'd mean basically a nuclear apocalypse. It's not clear that anyone would be left alive at all.

Again. Half of ALL life on earth, wiped out within a year, is the plan right now. Doesn't take a lot of Pokemon to do that. With the numbers low enough, there could be SOME survivors.

http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/@Ike and Mike: So in essence, it's the basic plot of your standard SMT game, but replace the demons with pokemon and the demon summoning program with pokeballs.
It's not a bad idea, but "dark" and "war" pokemon stories are not exactly uncommon and I think you will really need to work at it if you want to stand out.

@Ike: Well, SMT on a functional level is a darker pokemon - excepting that in Pokemon you can't rip the pokemon apart and mix-n-match them to get better mons.
Honestly this sounds like more of a tonal thing, which is a bit beyond my comprehension... based on what little I know the series seems to observe the spiritual and base natures of humanity of a species by subjecting them to their own mythology. The fact that some demons can be befriended and some can't is representative of the way that people as animals work. Some will reason with you. Some will not. You build an army, and later a new civilization, out of those you can forge an alliance with, or if nothing else those you can bend to your will through power.
This is actually something I can help with, because this is something that was hammered into my in school: Any surface elements are just that - surface elements. They're wrapping paper. On a functional level applying the morals and spiritualism of SMT to Pokemon is effectively no different than applying them to a world where superpowers develop spontaneously. It's interesting to see it in the guise of a familiar setting, but unless you adapt the spiritualism of S Mt to it, it's nothing more than a deconstruction, a poke-Watchmen. Go through an SMT and don't just think about what is happening, think about why it's happening. They're not just throwing in those mythological entities for yucks, the creators have done their homework and they know the mythological significance of all of them, and they're using it as symbolism to get the message across. Unlike Evangelion, Lucifer is not considered a good guy because the creators look at christianity like the average westerner looks at shintoism.

Good point.
much-more-expansive good point.
I dunno. I'm probably never gonna do it. I just have the idea in my head and feel the need to voice it.

http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/well, I'm gonna turn in a bit early. g'night guys.
All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.As far as dark Pokemon fics, I remember hearing about one called No Antidote, but I've never read it.
There was also an Anime deconstructing the whole powerful monsters given to children thing.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI don't know if I'll ever be able to make something meaningful/deep. :/

I think you're thinking of Naru Taru, but I'm not sure.
Personally, I've found that it's one of those Centipede's Dilemma things; the more preoccupied you are with trying to sound deep, the more likely you're just going to sound pretentious. Just try to write the best story you can, and the meaningfulness will develop on its own.
I don't see anything wrong with Thunder. He seems...(blushes) cute...
