A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

Justified confidence has always been a part of RD. Remember ten seconds flat?
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play@darkabomination: Fair point, however the effects of a being who embodies chaos only make Fluttershy a bully while a seminar which was meant to make people less of a doormat and instead was more about being aggressive made her even worse up to the point at getting mad at pinkie for laughing, throwing a guy and insulting her best friends purpose in life. I don't know which episode I consider the worst Mare do well, Spike at your Service, One Bad apple and more but I won't say yet since I am planning to do a full list of my thoughts of each episode of the series.
" inset something funny here "Luminosity: Felt like it focused on the overconfidence to me. She starts by letting her inner jerk out and then that progresses to her doing the aforementioned showboating and letting ponies almost die (which, I might add, was typically only stopped by the others). I see bailing Dash out as a necessity. I will agree that the attempt at dropping hints as to their identities came across as rubbing it in, though and that the main six should have easily realized that all it did was piss Dash off. Also, actually showing up to accept that award strikes me as something they really shouldn't have done (there's really no way they couldn't have seen 'that' as rubbing it in).

Discording is dubious, and works differently on everypony. It was weak on Applejack, turning her to a shitty liar that was just as bad as when she had to lie normally, didn't do anything on Rainbow Dash's loyalty instead just switching the target of said loyalty, worked best on Rarity and Pinkie Pie, and Fluttershy turned into a petty bully. It's inconsistent.

@Lumin: MMDW was not about RD being happy about being famous, it was about her becoming unbearably full of herself because of her abilities. It was basically Boast Busters from Trixie's point of view.
That's not to say it was a great episode, but I'm not convinced it deserves as much hate as it gets.
If Boast Busters had Trixie completely crushed by another Trixie, then I'd agree. The rest of mane 6 acts exactly, if even more so, vain as Rainbow Dash while destroying her.
Hell, your comparison works better for proving my point. Plenty of people think Boast Busters is Trixie getting her life smashed in front of her just for a stage act that the mane 6 decides is "arrogant" and taking pride in your talents in general seems to be a consistent mortal sin in this show.
Now, what makes Boast Busters better is that her demise doesn't come directly from mane 6, but from Snips and Snails deciding to... fact-check. But this one has mane 6 prety much devouring Rainbow Dash's aspirations for the sake of "success bad grr success".

@star: Oh yeah, I see that now. Sorry, I'm only half paying attention to the thread right now.
@wryte: I think Merriweather Williams in general doesn't deserve the hate she gets. She's not a fantastic writer, as far as MLP goes, but I think some of the reactions toward her are just way over the top.

"I feel like I'm on a raft and surrounding me is an ocean of dumb."- Mr. SarkExcept that they weren't bragging for the sake of their egos, they were doing it to try and drive the point home to Dash just how insufferable she was being. I agree it was far from the best way to go about it, but there is a distinction between their actions.
Nowhere in the episode do they say success is bad. In fact, at the climax the others tell Dash it's fine to not only be successful, but to be proud of it. The problem only arises when you go around rubbing your success in other people's faces or losing sight of doing positive things because you're more concerned with getting accolades for doing it.

The other five were also praising Mare-Do-Well for traits that could be expressly used to describe themselves. Dash probably should have figured it out if she wasn't too busy seeing red and the others should have seen that at that point they were just adding fuel to the fire.
It's one of those things where they came up with an overly complex plan to solve something that might have been diffused with a simple chat.

@wryte: I think two of my big problems with MMDW is when the rest of the M6 go on about how awesome Mare-do-Well is, it sounds a lot like what Dash was doing, even if they were just going along with the act, and how awkward it was watching RD claw for attention. I find that more sad than funny.

Except the rest of the episode had fuck-all to do with that moral. Besides the Mare Do Well persona acting incredibly vain just to crush RD further, RD's overconfidence hindering her own good actions was only brieftly touched upon and glanced aside, as a completely throwaway thing, even though THAT should have been the focus of the episode, the dangers of getting complacent. But no, the mane 6 decides to completely annihilate RD long before RD's confidence gets to that level, meaning they really have it in for successful ponies. They harrassed Trixie before she did anything to them for that reason too.
It's just consistent that the mane 6 are selfish hateful jerks who have it in for anyone prouder and happier for their success than they are. I would not like to have friends like that.

And me about Too Many Pinkie Pies.
YMMV. Those are some of my favorite episodes.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayHey, guys, what's... what the crap are we trying to discuss every controversial plot point at once?
I've been through all of these more than enough times, so I'm not going to involve myself except to point out one thing that I think is an objective error:
As far as I can tell, this is simply not true. The MMDW when acting in character, never showboated or attempted to draw attention to itself. It simply saved the day and then left. You could make a case that the rest of the cast was vain in congratulating themselves, but as far as the MMDW itself goes, it was pretty humble.

Rainbow Dash was always dangerously overconfident, she charged at a fucking dragon 20 times her size, which would have killed her. Instead of focusing on dangers of overconfidence and how it hinders what good things you're trying to do(like having her snap out of it once she failed to help or came dangerously close to failing), the episode instead focused on Rainbow Dash's happiness in fame as the definitive wrong thing, deciding that completely crushing her is the way. It felt like some hate-filled and jealous loser writing on how success is wrong.
