A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/Alright so seems there really IS a rather good sized divide between people who thing Daring being real was a good idea or not. Spent most of last night arguing with people over it.
The issue is, I really don't get the people saying it was bad, because most of them are claiming it's because Daring was simply a product of RD putting herself into the story. That the Daring we were seeing on screen was RD's take on Daring.
But, that is completely, provably, and 100% false. There was a picture of her on the cover, RD had nothing to do with visualizing Daring's look.
Yeah, I don't get that line of reasoning either. I think that they could've executed it better so that it made more sense in-universe, but my gripes about it have nothing to do with how RD imagined things.
Personally what I would have done is this:
It turns out that Twilight's mother is the author of the books. However, Daring Do is a real pony, and serves as the inspiration/source material for books (maybe part of the profits sponsor her globetrotting or something). That way you'd still get the whole "cast goes on an adventure with Daring Do" while solving the question of how the heck she finds time to write, and also giving Twilight's family some development.
Reaction Image RepositoryI just imagine Mrs Sparkle got a lucrative deal writing Expanded Universe stories for Daring to confuse would-be villains and rivals as to which books are real and which aren't.
The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls! Then real villains read it, try to team up with ficional ones, and it becomes very embarrassing for them.

Maybe Mrs. Sparkle is Daring's Ghost Writer? dunno how that pays or anything...
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes. My main issue with it is that they didn't make enough of an effort to really make the Daring Do material connect with the setting that's already established. It feels almost like once they reach the cottage, they hop from Equestria to "Daring Do World". It's not that the two settings are totally incompatible, it's that the episode didn't really build up any connection between them. It worked in "Read it and Weep" because we only saw Daring in an Imagine Spot, so the pulpy, Indiana Jones feel of it made sense. In this case, it still works, mostly, but it felt a bit off because they translated all that hallmarks of the genre into the "real" world without adapting it in any way.
Reaction Image RepositoryThings would make a lot more sense if a portal to another world was involved.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayWhy does it need any build up? It fits just fine. They never stepped from one world to another. This was just another part of the larger world. I really don't see any issues with anything there.
How does it need one? Nothing couldn't happen in the world, it's not just the Mane 6, there is a larger world. And I LOVE the expanding on it. What happens that makes no sense, that contradicts existing fact? Everything works perfectly fine.

Basically everything, starting with the fact that if that stuff was real, at least Twilight should have known about it.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayIt's not the facts of what happened, it's the tone. I never said that it makes no sense, just that it needed to be integrated better. As for "why does it need build up?", you could ask that about literally anything. There needs to be buildup because otherwise it distracts the audience from the story; each event needs to not only be consistent with what we've seen, but it needs to follow logically from what we already know. Up to this point, Daring Do was never treated as anything other than fictional in-universe, so suddenly saying "oh, it's actually real and takes place pretty close to where the rest of the show is set" is kind of a big jump to make without any prior foreshadowing. Does it contradict already established facts? No. But I'm not sold that it's a logical progression given what we know about Daring Do's place in the setting, either.
Also this. It's implied that Twilight has studied the books pretty exhaustively (she freaking knows where Daring Do lives), and never even considered the idea of there being any truth to the books. You'd think that she'd at least have made some comment about how Yearling clearly did the research about the setting or culture or whatever. It would have given some foreshadowing to the idea that it was something that had actually happened in reality.

Reaction Image RepositoryWe don't know how far away it actually is, so can't say "pretty close" And since when has Twi been omniscient? So how does her not knowing it was real matter? It's a larger world then just the mane 6. Not everything revolves around them or involves them in some way.
All this does is make the world bigger, add more to it, make it grander.
Daring was already an established character, all this did was take the books from pure fiction, to mostly non-fiction. Pretty sure she would have changed some details, embellished, altered things a bit to make a better story. nothing at all requires them to be in another world or another setting, it's just another part of the existing one that is much larger then just them.
