I was looking through a comic book price guide one time, and came across a comic from the '50s that awkwardly fused two popular genres of the time. The result was "Space Western". Someone must have been thinking, "Hey, we'll sell twice as many comics this way!"

I'm picturing horses with space helmets and oxygen masks.

@Ike Well I'm feeling a little on the irritated and bored side of things right now. Mostly it's from my family.

There's also something to be said for genre crossovers in those days when science fiction, cosmic horror, and fantasy were regularly thrown in a blender topped off with a good helping of purple prose. For instance, Northwest Smith was a character in the thirties that could have been Han Solo's ancestor having smuggling and trading between planets derailed after encountering an Eldritch Abomination of the week. Even better as there's a story where a wizard summons up the author's Action Girl protagonist from her own fantasy series and they go on an adventure.

Settings in general are way too attached to specific traits of popular works. Every fantasy is a medieval european setting where everyone is racist, every cyberpunk is a corporate dystopia, and sci-fi is either Star Trek or Doctor Who.

Some bloody variety maybe?

Oh and here is something silly I made in ponymaker Just thought I might as well share.

God the 50s and 60s were certainly crazy especially the 60s when it came to comic books hence the Silver Age.

@Syd: Space Western is actually a legit genre now. There have been some pretty popular and well regarded shows of that type. Cowboy Bebop and Firefly come to mind.

It worked for Firefly.

ah, the Silver Age. when Batman was blue, super-intelligent gorillas were the most normal villain you could find, and anything was possible. waii

Trigun hits closer to the western side of Space Western, as there's no interplanetary travel and plays a lot of western tropes with futuristic weapons. Aside from a few mentions of past history, the 3 suns, and the fact that it's not on Earth, you'd hardly notice.

Battle Beyond the Stars is another great example, though it's more like the Seven Samurai In Space though both genre conventions are done rather well.

@Luminosity, Starscream: [lol] stuff like that is why i loved Batman: The Brave and the Bold. just one huge animated love letter to the Silver Age and all its goofiness.

Syd- yeah, we found it. Thank goodness for that.

And yeah, silver age stuff was awesome. If I ever get to run a superhero campaign it's definitely gonna have some silver age influence. Maybe I'll even bring back the dragon versus T Rex fight idea I had...

[up][up] Despite(or maybe because of) the fact that I utterly hate what fans turned Batman into, I really enjoyed that cartoon. And Joker singing.

@Luminous Ah come on, current Batman's not that bad. If it weren't for him then we wouldn't have the Animated Series but then again maybe I'm used to Batman being all dark and gritty. Surprisingly I have never watched an entire episode of Batman Brave and the Bold outside of one clip that is.

@Syd (Sighs) Yes Syd, it happened....

I don't mind Batman being dark and gritty, I'm just a little tired of him being infallible.
