A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

All of the usual forum rules apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

Is it even true that sugar makes you hyper? I don't think it actually does.

[up] I put 3 blocks of sugar into my tea yesterday and now I can shoot lasers out of my fingers. Go figure.

@Story: Sugar can give you additional energy. The whole Sugar Rush thing is probably a placebo, though. It's so ingrained in popular culture that you feel the effects even if it doesn't have a real effect.

Maybe the Cake's plan is the opposite. They build up Pinkie's sugar tolerance to insane levels, then cut her off. The resulting crash will suck all joy from Equestria.

Most people are so convinced they should feel more there tends to be a bit of an adrenalin boost. People just expect it.

Scientific explanation of placebo effect:

You: I should feel better now.

Brain: You should? Ok, hey, body, command to feel better.

Body: Why... ah, nevermind, affirmative.

Oh trust me there are people out in the world that are hyper on sugar. Ya just need to look in the right places for 'em.

It'd be interesting to do a blind test to see if sugar actually makes you more energetic.

A good dose of sugar and cafeen helps with my depression, I'm pretty sure it does.

Speaking of, I actually had a twirl bar not too long ago on my way home from Reading and I don't normally buy chocolate bars but I thought: "Why the hell not? I'll treat myself."

A twirl bar? Is that a regional thing? I don't think we have them here.

according to Wikipedia, it's made by Cadbury's Ireland branch. introduced as a single bar in the early 70s, repackaged as a twin bar in the mid 80s.

@Syd Never was a fan of Steampunk, I'm more a space/Sci-fi/Medieval kind of guy.

Steampunk is cool, but I'll take retro space opera science fiction any day.

@Story No like Star Trek, Flash Gordon, Star Wars and even to some extent Ratchet and Clank. And yes Story, Foundation is a part of the Space Opera genre.

It's also a classic. But I guess not retro since it was written at the time, not deliberately emulating an older era.

I'll take genre throwbacks, but I prefer most stuff written before the mid sixties. In general after the likes of Arthur C Clark, Robert Heinlein, and Isaac Asimov became popular, a lot of the more fantastical science fiction lost favor and became much more didactic. Which, produced great works in their own right, but a lot of older material from pulps and paperbacks were neglected and it's become harder to find.
