@Seraph: It's an episode not related to the overarching plot. Therefor, in my book, it's filler. I'm not using it as an insult, I'm just stating a fact.

I don't expect every episode this season to be related to the box, but I'm hoping it won't just be shoved into the last two episode of the season. Ms. McCarthy did say it was a season long plot line.

I liked Daring's Jerk with a Heart of Gold untrustworthy personality, it's a bit refreshing. And that she didn't warm up to everyone by the end.

So don't most of these ponies have jobs? Ditching work for a week when there's some threat to Equestria or a royal wedding or whatever is one thing, but taking off to stalk your friend's favorite author? I wonder how Big Mac feels about the increased work load.

The issue is people tend to take "filler" as being a detriment, or a flaw in the episode. Was it, in and of itself a good story, if yes, that's all that matters.

It was pretty much a filler ep, but I had fun, personally.

Implying that you enjoyed it, despite it being 'filler'. As if it's status as 'filler' made it somehow less likely it could be enjoyed.

[up]Well, Spike gt left behind, so odds are he's helping out with the library, though honestly it's not like that needs lots of care. he could also be helping tend to Fluttershy's animals. Rarity is self employes, Pinkie is so random the cakes a are likely used to her being rather sporadic at working. RD is the head of the weather patrol, but not the only one, so she can just let the next in line take over for a bit. That only leaves AJ, which it all depedns how much work there is right then. it might be a lull right now whre they don't have a lot of major work that needs to be done.

[up][up]Must of been a slow week.

[up]Despite allusions to an over-arching plot this show is still primarily episodic, so I find designating episodes as filler rather strange.

[up][up][up][up] Relax, it will conveniently be never brought up and will be Schrödinger's Gun (unless they go the Simultaneous Arcs route and making an episode about what he did during this episode)

@Crow: Maybe it's not apple harvesting season yet?

Plus, the Cakes might enjoy some peace and quiet with Pinkie gone.

[down]Point taken.

@Mio & Seraph: I haven't really viewed any MLP eps as filler until now, actually. Now this season has dangled a significant plot thread in our faces, I guess I'm seeing it a bit differently now? I don't like it more or less than any other episode, like I said, I'm just stating something.

But, keep in mind that farmers do have to keep their crops up to check, even out of season...

It takes a LOT of management to run a farm.

Again, what does any of that have to do with the quality of each episode in and of itself?

The plot arc is a bonus, something in addition to the existing show, not something that makes those it's not in an lesser.

[up]And Earth Pony's have magic, who knows how many issues they can overcome with their powers. Also, while many crops do need a lot of maintenance, I doubt Apple trees are really all that in need of it till harvesting time comes around. And while they do have other crops, it's the trees that take up most of the farm.

Spike was probably napping, being roped into CMC pranks, baking another cake with gems (or trying to), or trying to do something nice for Rarity.

Another A+ run,...then again,it was a Polsky episode,it just couldn't fail.

And on Castle-Mania,that one was decent too,the falling action was kinda silly though. B+ to that one.

Wow,and I thought Season 3 was on top of it.

@Seraph: I never said it affected the quality. That's what I've been saying. It's just more noticeable that in previous seasons.

If you consider that episode filler because of the box, then most of season 1 was filler because there was no mention of the Grand Galloping Gala or Nightmare Moon in them, or season 2 because of no Discord of Chrysalis, or half of Season 3 because there was no Crystal Empire in that half. The show is episodic in nature. Just because it has an arc doesn't mean that that they would devote the entire season to it nor would it make the filler comparably sucky as a result.

Never mind I mist read your posts.

I was surprised too that they felt out of their league. They took on dragons, sorcerers, the spirit of chaos...

I can't comment too much on the episode though. Lagging and ads ruined the showing. I didn't even see the end. tongue

@ Gwen, the issue is that the entire concept of labeling an episode as 'filler' has rather negative implications and connotations to it. "Filler" is seen as a bad thing for some reason. he only time i ever see someone refer to something as 'filler' it's either counting it as a strike against the episode, or in a "It's filler, but it was enjoyable" way. Like being filler was some flaw that the episode had to overcome.

Even if you didn't mean it that way, that's still what 'filler' tends to mean, and you even worded it as "It's filler but... "

[up]Agreed. he very very much goes more for Rule of Funny or Rule of Awesome over sticking to the narrative. his stuff tends to be episodes that are pretty damn fun to watch, but don't hold up to well when you try to really think about them.

Filler is not a bad word. There's good filler and bad filler, it's a neutral term on its own. Just as having an episode be relevant to a larger plot doesn't automatically make it good.

Personally this episode didn't really do it for me but I don't consider bad either. It was... average.

[up][up]I don't think he goes for Rule of Awesome and Funny more then most other writers like Mc Carthy or Larson, it's more that he tends to not put much thought into the plots themselves and focuses more on characters and their interaction.

Not necessarily a bad thing, but it does explain why his episodes tend to have not well thought out plot resolutions or are on the predictable side.

@Spade: I'd say that'd actually be a fairly-accurate depiction of the episode for me.

Again though, am I the only one who thought Pinkie was a tad too random again? (Random holiday party? Really? I think that'd be a little much?)

for anyone who has ever watched a shonen anime, filler is most certainly not a neutral word.

Eh, I think a random holiday party kinda works. It's basically an excuse for "Hey, I'm bored and wanna hang out with everyone", but it kinda fits with Pinkie's hangups about whether or not people want to hang out with her - having an excuse makes it easier for her to ask, I figure.

[up]Naruto's appropriately named Filler Hell springs eagerly to mind...
