@Powah: Earth Ponies knew the lay of the lands better than the Pegasi who rarely visit the lowlands, or the Unicorns who stay near the mountains and open plains and friendly woods, knowing not the hostile hills and scrublands that made for greate ambush grounds. They would play hit-and-run and ambush, often taking hostages. Others holed up in mountainside bunkers made strong with their Gift of the Earth.

My fanon, they got to gunpowder and metalwork first, and defended themselves with early-era cannons and armor for a good long while.

The earth ponies weren't exactly helpless, though. Political manipulation probably made more sense because if a subjugation failed, the earths were in control of all the food and pissing off the only group with mass food production would be a terrible idea. And with the politics, each tribe brought something to the table the other tribes had almost zero ability to control (unicorns and pegasi could probably try to grow food, but I doubt they could keep up with the earth ponies in a meaningful way).

It would be hard though...pegasi control the weather...they can make massive storms...they fly...unicorns have magic...earths have only pluck and rotten vegetables. tongue

My fanon was that Earth Ponies always had better Geo Effects advantages than the Pegasi had aerial advantages, and Unicorns never knew how to take full advantage of the lay of the land.

@powah: Well there is the simple fact that they have the food where the others don't. The saying an army moves on it's stomach exist for a reason. It would be kind of like a reverse siege in a way. They would just have to hold up until both sides had to concede due to starvation.

There is also the fact that they could simply bribe the other side with more food to break off the alliance.

[up][up]Yes, make massive storms to destroy the fields that grow the food. . .that they also depend on.

As for the unicorns I doubt more then a handful of them could utilize effective combat magic. Any army they would have would probably consist of essentially peaseant levy slingers and spearmen. Not the most fearful force.

So we accept that only earths can grow plants? That's their power?

Because elsewhere lots of people say no.

They were the only ones who coud cultivate with yields good enough to feed pretty much anypony. Pegasi have no place to grow plants in the air, apart from high-altitude lichen on mountainsides and algae somehow trapped in clouds, while Unicorns had to expend vast amounts of magic to get any kind of tenable food yields.

So that idea then that Unicorns and Pegasi grow plants like we would in the real world but Earths have instant plant powers, regrowing the fruit overnight etc?

@ Mio

Good points.

Magical Mystery Cure showed us that Earth ponies can destroy (Pinkie) and re-grow (AJ) an entire apple orchard overnight.

It was overnight, wasn't it?

If just had a clear, unquestionable demonstration of EP powers not open to denial because it was part of a song or something similar.

They could easily do it. They have powers and the earths don't.

No they don't.

@Powah: Well, in the season opener AJ states that "Even Our Earth Pony M Agic can't do anything about these vines", or something to that effect. IT's basically unquestionable confirmation that they have some degree of magic, if not to precisely what degree and how.

So, downside of today for me: On-ste contract got terminated early, and I go back to my isolated company offices next week. Upshot: Making friends and influencing people like a boss. I'd been playing Magic The Gathering at lunches with a couple of devs, and when I told them I'd be returning to my old job they offered to keep in touch and connect over Linkedin.

And honestly... this is gonna make me sound kinda sad, but more than just career contacts, I think the main thing that makes me happy about that is that they suggested it - I was never quite sure while playing with them whether they liked me, or if I was just that guy who honed in on their games and they only tolerated me, and this pretty much cinched it as the former... which is nice.

AJ actually says, "try as we might, us earth ponies can't do anything to get rid of them." That either implies they have some earth magic, or that earth ponies are the only ones who do any farming.

AJ doesn't directly reference Earth pony magic.

AJ: And try as we might, us Earth ponies can't do anythin' to get rid of 'em! *points a hoof towards Rarity* Don't suppose you know any magic that might stop 'em from spreadin'?

So the speculation about whether or not Earth ponies actually have magic will continue. Damn. I was excited there for a minute. sad

[up][up]Well they never refer to Pegasi abilities as magic either, people just assume it is magic, and I don't see why that's not a safe assumption here either.

Unicorn magic is the only magic actually referred to as magic in the show...if the show ever says earth pony powers then I'm satisfied.

It was overnight, wasn't it?

I think that part's of questionable cannonicity seeing as AJ's family somehow disappeared too.

Yeah, I keep wondering where the rest of the Apple family was while Pinkie was in charge. Too bad they'll probably never explain that bit of MMC weirdness.
