A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

@Mio: Or that the unicorns were land-owners for the other tribes. IT wouldn't surprise me if that's how the unicorns justified their levy, by claiming they owned the land the earth ponies farmed.
IT also wouldn't surprise me if they tried to have some degree of control over pegasi structure. That said, the presence of a council of tribe leaders does make control unlikely, but unicorn landowners would still make a degree of sense.
Still, there'd have to be SOME unicorn servants, like Clover the Clever.

I find that really unlikely if we are too assume that the tribes were as separated as they are portrayed to be. It's also unlikely in that of all of the leverage the three tribes supposedly had over each other, the Unicorn's is probably the weakest. I know controlling day and night sounds like a bigger deal then the rest, but they really seem to have nothing to fall back on when their resources run dry, where as the Earth Ponies can just go somewhere else to grow food, and the Pegasi can just raid for supplies if need be.

Well, if anything that's all the more reason for them to try and claim ownership of the land, to give themselves more bargaining power, at least in theory. The Earth Ponies could leave, but by claiming all the immediate territory it makes it easy to justify taxing them until they basdically skip the country, which would be inconvenient for an entire race to do as one.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.@Mio: The Earth ponies could control the food and subsist on foodstuffs too foul or coarse for the other ponies to stomach. Pegasi could find inaccessible places beyond everypony to grow high-altitude lichens.
My fanon has it that Earth Ponies were the first to discover metalworking and gunpowder, the Pegasi were the first to tame steam and electricity, and Unicorns discovered the secrets of semiconductor quartz in their research into crystals as magic hardware.
@Kegi: I can imagine the Earth Ponies trying to rebel by deliberately growing delicious-looking crops that taste foul or have the side effect of giving really bad cases of the runs.

The three finest things in life are to splat your enemies, drive them from their turf, and hear their lamentations as their rank falls!![]()

Well that is more reason for them to do so, but I actually don't think they would be capable of enforcing it themselves, if they did or allied with the Pegasi as is often assumed in this pseudo-caste structure, the Earth Ponies would not be acting as independent as they are.

http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/I think some cities have an elite dominated by one race, and Cantlerlot just happens to have a unicorn aristocracy. We haven't really seen that anywhere else.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayI didn't remember the Oranges' having unicorn servants but I would have to go back to that episode to look for them. My comment was more aimed at the people who think that because Rarity likes being fancy and Twilight is the princess's student, added to Applejack being a farmer, that all unicorns are upperclass snobs who oppress the poor Earth pony laborers, and forget that when the ponies did have that kind of segregation and prejudice, the same story that showed that past was making the point that "This is how bad it used to be but we've changed and learned and aren't like that anymore" and I was citing specific examples from the show that contradict that stereotype. Not to mention whoever thinks that kind of thing probably is unaware that Diamond Tiara, Silver Spoon, Hoity Toity and Photo Finish are all Earth ponies. (mainly some of the stuff on the Alternate Character Interpretation page where people assume that because there are pony "races," they must be in a similar structure to human racial segregation and prejudice. For me, having the society that we see in the show's current day, where the three groups co-exist very nicely and none of the three pony types rules over the others, is one of the things I like about the show because I like seeing a portrayal of a more egalitarian society than real life unfortunately has.
