A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

There were four EG comics. The Fall of Sunset Shimmer, the 2013 Annual, the 2014 Holiday Special, and the (real, I own a digital copy) "March Radness
". If I'm missing anything blew me know.
Of those, The Fall of Sunset Shimmer is the one that had the most impact as it came bundled with some of the home releases of Equestria Girls and the backstory more or less checks out with all other EQG media.
The one aspect that doesn't work anymore is its interpretation of the Canterlot Five since they became actual characters in Amending Fences and the show's take proved much more popular.
Correct. That's precisely what that is.
I would say that there's also the thing where Starswirl gets treated as the guy who solves all his problems by banishing them into other dimensions without caring about the people living there.
I noticed Rarity is missing, and also there's a pony that looks suspiciously like a certain mare that shows up in the Zelda series. And the horse on the far right as the screen fades has Trixie's coat, and her mane is Trixie's shade of purple for her clothes, but it's clearly not that pale blue her mane and tail normally are.

The powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.Post of the Week #3494
Why does CDRW get banned for that, and Rich Reeders get to carry on after what he did? That's a incompletely unfair and unbalanced outcome.
Can somebody please explain that to me?
No. And we need you to calm down before you suffer the same fate as Ginger and CDRW. Please?

- Fanon: Fans and reviewers often interpret that Flash Magnus replaced Shining Armor as the Captain of the Royal Guard with the latter being busy in the Crystal Empire despite Twilight clearly stating that he was just the newest drill sergeant.
Does this sound more like Common Knowledge? Or does/can this overlap with Fanon and which is the better fit if so?
I've never heard of that. I think it is fanon at most, definitely not canon.
To see whether it is just Common Knowledge, we should determine whether or not this idea is used in fafics.

Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesI would call that Fanon. Common Knowledge would require a non-trivial amount of the fandom to think that that's specifically what's going on in-universe, which I can't say I've seen.
About these
entries under NeverLiveItDown. My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic we agreed to cut. Before I take to NLID cleanup for thoughts before removing (like if the fandom moves on from it, how long did the NLID have to be in effect to count), I have these other NLID examples to run by.
- The Storm King gets called a weak villain by a lot of fans for his final moments, ignoring that he did enslave all of Canterlot and several other nations - even forcing an entire kingdom into hiding because he was too powerful. It's just that a lot of this was done off screen or only done under his command - so it's easy for people to forget that Tempest Shadow did all her cool villainy at his instruction. Plus, at The Climax of the film, he actually wasn’t one to go down so easily, as both Twilight and Tempest, as the latter pulls a Heel–Face Turn, almost die to defeat him.
Not sure if example because I don't know of fan works flanderizing him as inept. Might Memetic Loser fit better? Or is NLID better as he's not treated as loser outside that moment? What's the difference between Memetic Loser and NLID for a loss? Or is that a question for elsewhere?
- Queen Novo undergoes this for punishing Twilight's friends when the latter acted alone. [[FourthWallMyopia From her perspective]] she welcomed these seven people into her safely guarded home and they reward this by trying to steal from her. What's more is that Twilight makes it look like her friends were trying to distract everyone so she could steal the Pearl. She really does have every right to be annoyed.
I have never seen any works bash or vilify her over this, most seem to outright ignore this incident. Should it be cut and moved to Fourth Wall Myopia which would cover the issue?
I think for the Storm King, inactive is confused with inept. He is supposed to be a great conqueror, yet we don't see him do that much, and instead the action focuses mainly on his second in command. The story effectively makes his competence as a conqueror an Informed Ability by not showing it to us directly.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesFourth Wall Myopia is probably the better fit for the Novo example.
Yeah,t hat's basically what happens when a movie is more interested in fleshing out The Dragon than in the ostensible Big Bad.
The same happened to Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine in the main trilogy.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesUnlike Storm King, Palpatine still generated some sort of actual threat onscreen by revealing himself to manipulate the Rebels into coming to one place, where he can destroy them. The plot and characters treat him seriosly and he at least generates the presence of a powerful evil overlord.
Storm King only has a final fight and even then, he is only a threat because of magic weapon and even with that he is still defeated in a goofy way, with all his prior screentime adding to him lacking any sort of threatening or malevolent presence, because he never actually does anything himself (as said before, his right hand does everything for him) and presents himself as a buffoon.

...Wait, weren't there, like, five My Little Pony: Equestria Girls comics?
The prologue with Sunset and the Humane 5, the Christmas Special, "March Madness" which I never saw and am not totally sure it exists?
