A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

This show is really weird about Spike, though. In early seasons, he is always grouped with the other, non-sentient, pets. Dragons in general were clearly more monsters than sentient beings on equal footing with ponies early on.
And then there's Equestria Girls. Oh boy, what a mess that is. Now Spike is a dog. With a collar no less. And not one someone puts on him, no, he got that in the transformation.
And no one questions this, Twilight least of all. She never even seems to register that Spike just turned into something that is clearly treated as an animal in the human world, not as an equal sentient being, and indeed does not comment on other animals clearly not being sentient like Spike.
And neither do the human characters question this. Oh, sure, they are amazed that he can talk for about five minutes, but then it is never spoken of again. Like, no one asks Spike if he is a pet in the pony world too, or how he gets treated, or anything like that.
No one questions that Spike got turned into a DOG.
And then the human world Spike turns up, and he is a dog too, but a non-sentient one. And he gets turned sentient by magic, which reinforces the idea that Spike is just an uplifted animal even further.
Like, the writers could have turned him into a junior student, just like the CMC. They sure didn't turn the CMC into animals.
Makes you wonder what other species would have turned into. Man, the Sirens were damn lucky there. They could have turned into actual seahorses for all we know.
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesI mean, just put yourself in Spike's shoes here.
Imagine you and your friends go through this magical portal to another world. Suddenly all your friends are turned into strange beings which, for all intents and purposes, are that world's equivalent of humans. Only their appearance changed, but for all intents and purposes, their essential being is the same.
But not you. No, you realize, after looking around, that you have been turned into that world's equivalent of an animal. And not just that, but now you're wearing a collar. With a tag. You just turned into what is clearly meant to be a pet.
And then your friends get told that you need to be put on a leash in this brave new world. It's the law, after all. You're not even actually allowed into where your friends are now, so you have to hide in their backpack, like a handbag dog.
I mean, how humiliating can it get, right?
But then, your friends don't seem to mind much. No, they don't seem to mind at all, actually. They, in fact, seem to take to treating you like a pet with disturbing ease, as if you've always been their pet. They treat you like who you are, who you were, for sure, but at the same time they don't seem to have any hesitancy whatsoever about keeping up the masquerade of you being their pet. A token apology, and into the backpack you go.
What's worse, you seem to be taking to this pet thing disturbingly easy, too. You suddenly start to show disturbingly animal-like behaviour, and you don't even notice it...
Hope shines brightest in the darkest timesAlso, magical fantasy eggs can be as strong as the writers want them to be. Maybe dragon eggs have the consistency of rock for all we know.

Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayLast week I decided to switch to only posting them every week instead of every day. I can go back if you want, but other people were in favor of moving to weekly.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayPost of the Week #3491
Ah well. Not exactly surprised. It is a pretty easy idea to come up with. I'm sure plenty of people have run with other ideas I've been toying with, like a benign changeling visiting Ponyville on Hearts and Hooves day to learn more about love as seen by ponies.

Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayNeverLiveItDown. My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic
- Princess Celestia, Princess Luna, and Princess Twilight locking up a filly in Tartarus without questioning whether or not she has parents is bound to become this, especially among those who think Cozy Glow didn't deserve it or those who believe the Princesses gave Cozy and Tirek the chance to work together as cellmates. Even aside from all that, the sheer fact that they have the authority to subject a filly to such a punishment raises some troubling implications about the Equestrian criminal justice system. That being said, she did almost drain Equestria of its magic, trapped the heroes in Tartarus, and almost trapped Starlight Glimmer and the Student Six in another dimension, and was responsible for the above "Twilight scolding the CMC" moment, all without repenting, so the legitimacy of her sentence is still up for debate.
- Which is then followed by Cozy Glow, Tirek and Queen Chrysalis ultimately being Taken for Granite at the hooves of the princesses. Their crimes were definitely a lot more severe, involving reigniting Fantastic Racism amidst Equestria, curb-stomping the heroes with Grogar's magic and straight-up attempting to kill them after all seemed hopeless, but now that Cozy Glow is in an even worse situation than being trapped in Tartarus, people started making the same arguments that they did back then. Equestria's royalty may never truly live in harmony.
The Cozy example was cut per this thread elsewhere
(this version did add how it was unfairly ignoring context) as it wasn't overshadowing the rest of the Princesses actions over the series. The same seems to applies to the S9 finale where the backlash is overwhelming on Discord. The entries seem more like Draco in Leather Pants to the villains than fans exaggerating those punishing them. (NLID would mean Fanon has then regularly unfairly punish children and such which doesn't seem the case.)
Should they be cut? If so there are many other suspect NLID examples on the page. It was said we should wait until NLID undergoes TRS, it did with no changes relevant to this.

Why do we never see dragons the same age as Spike?
