I just want Raven vs Starlight Glimmer plz

Death Battle is one of the few Versus analyses that I actually trust, because they emphasize trying to make sense of how powerful the character is supposed to be within the context of the series and universe presented, while still trying to make sense of the actual math behind various feats and abilities the characters have. Where other Versus groups just try and come up with the most tortured logic possible to justify all of their favorite characters being universe-busters.

Their Deadpool v. Pinkie Pie fight is actually why I started watching the series.

They did Raven v. Twilight Sparkle.

tl;dr: It's closer than you might actually think. While Raven's feats do greatly outclass Twilight's, both Raven and Twilight have a relatively even amount of useful I Win buttons that they can just whip out and end the fight with right off the bat. Death Battle's philosophy is, "If the characters fought 100 times, who would win over 50% of those fights?" and with match-ups like this, sometimes it can be very difficult to find that edge that would give one character a leg up.

That edge came in the form of Raven's soul-self, which can keep fighting even after Raven herself has been incapacitated, effectively neutralizing some of Twilight's I Win buttons (such as her transmutation spells). This gave Raven the advantage she needed to tip her above the 51% likelihood threshold to defeat Twilight Sparkle.

Twilight was also a character uniquely suboptimized to fight Raven, because some of Raven's abilities absorb the emotions of her foe. Twilight is so upbeat, optimistic, and cheerful even at the worst of times that Raven could basically fight at the top of her game without having to worry about losing herself to pain and hatred.

EDIT: I should note that, ironically, despite being one of the more glaring research failures in the series's history, Deadpool v. Pinkie Pie is the most thematically appropriate MLP fight the series has ever done.

They lean into the Fourth-Wall Breaking Pinkie thing that was popular in the fanon but wasn't actually a thing in the show. That's the research failure.

The fight concludes with Pinkie and Deadpool bonding over Pinkie's delectable treats and deciding to screw this. They quit the fight to go visit other fights and have fun, then troll the Death Battle cast for putting them in this situation in the first place, before going back to Ponyville and becoming BEST FRIENDS FOREVER. Pinkie and Deadpool win, the central concept of Death Battle loses.

Combine Twilight Sparkle and Raven together and you get Oleander from Them's Fightin' Herds

Are we talking about serious!Raven or Teen Titans Go!To The Movies!Raven? Because she apparently has a lot of Story Breaker Powers that she only gets to use when the show is a comedy.

@Tobias: What do you mean by "the context of the universe" etc.? That is a very vague description. I mean, Celestia, in the context of her Universe, lifts the Sun. I don't see the difference.

I have seen Death Battles before. Including all three ones involving ponies. I have also seen a lot of criticism of Death Battle. For example, they treat G1 Starscream as the speed of a jet just because Starscream can turn into one, when apparently Starscream's actually faster than light.

Also, Death Battle actively avoids using characters with too much HAX as they want to avoid the debate that would involve.

You seem to think that all other sites come up with excuses to overpower characters, but that's not what I find at all. While I disagree with Outskirts Battledome that Tempest Shadow has to be faster than light to dodge the Storm King's blasts, they're normally conservative. They refuse to accept Master Roshi being able to blow up the moon despite the fact he litterally did so on panel, for example. They also refuse to rate Ajimu higher than star level despite the fact that she survived the Big Bang and has a power that is litterally "create another Universe" and another that is litterally "control everything in the Universe". This is litterally narrated to us.

Edit: Also, Death Battle always makes the fight far closer than it would actually be as part of their official policy. High tier DC characters are so fast that light itself is effectively standing still next to them. Twilight would not even get to move in a real fight.

Of course the first things I see when I check in on the thread for the first time in forever are power level arguments, FOE discussion and an embarrassing Post of the Day featuring yours truly.[lol] For the record, I'm pretty sure the "goat mom" comment was a joke in response to someone else, but otherwise yeah I'm ashamed of probably at least like 90% of my posts before somewhere around 2018, mainly because of bitching and going off topic a lot.

Don't know if anyone ever saw this, but nearly a year ago I commissioned a cute MLP and Azumanga Daioh crossover featuring the resident smart, snarky girls from both series interacting.

Also, have a completely unrelated but still adorable pic of Sunset Shimmer and an Evee

What would Sunset evolve her Eevee into? Actually, what would each pony evolve their Eevee into?

Rainbow - Jolteon for the speed and storm association.

Celestia - Espeon. Obviously.

Luna - Umbreon. Also obviously.

Pinkie - Sylveon. It would be easy for her to earn affection from stuffing it with pastries.

Rarity - Also Sylveon. It looks decked out in ribbons.

Any other ideas?

Applejack would like the Grass-type Leafeon, and it can supposedly clean the air so that would help her plants grow. Twilight might fit with Espeon because its Psychic powers are similar to the magic and telekinesis she uses, plus it's lavender-colored like she is. Another option besides Sylveon for Rarity could be Glaceon. It has markings on its ears and tail that look similar to her cutie mark and ice crystals are also something that naturally glitters like the shiny gems she loves.

Hell ya, Rarity and Glaceon.

~

Stories that portray the ponies and their princesses as planet busters make me groan while the stories that explore the actual system behind the celestial movement I find more interesting. When it comes to my fictional media consumption, I'd rather the answer that feels right, and is more entertaining besides, than the one that is technically correct but feels bonkers to my sensibilities.

Also, I'd still argue the show is inconsistent enough that anything goes, really.

@God of Awesome: Well, the princesses being planet-busters is not usually relevant in my fanverse. It's mainly just backstory. The celestial mechanics do come up though. I don't know if you have tried my fanverse before, but if you haven't, well, no one has actually busted a planet in my fanverse. It's not exactly helpful to bust a planet after all. I mean, there might kind of be a metaphysical advantage in my fanverse, but it would be worse than dropping a nuke in our world. Trying it would be basically suicidal due to the consequences.

Has the term "Mane 6" ever been used on the show itself? I know it's been used in marketing, but I've never heard it on the show proper.

They had the mean 6 being an obvious anagram of mane 6 as well as a descriptor of their counterparts.

I think that might have been part of it.

I rarely like it when a fanfic steps out of Equestria and it’s “We’re not in Fairyland anymore, little pony. This is the ‘’real’’ world where ‘’’hard’’’ creatures make ‘’’hard’’’ decisions!”

Under The Northern Lights is an example of the kind of foreign exploration that I like, in part were it an newer fic I’d suspect it were poking a little fun at the idea of the cynical foreign country.

Post of the Day #2865

On the other hoof, it could be mutually beneficial for both parties. Villains wait until the previous book is published, just to be polite before starting their next nefarious plan. Daring gets plenty of material to work with, and villains get good advertizing from the books. She wins every time of course, but that's a given. After all, any self-respecting pulp adventure series needs it's effective villain scheming against the invincible hero.

@God of Awesome: Fair enough. Though I considered that typical for portrayals of other countries in the show itself, which continued even after I wrote that. Look at the dragons, the gryphons, the changelings, the Kirin, the yaks and everything we see in the movie.

And Zebrica isn't meant to be a criticism of Equestria. They've just had a rough time they've been dealing with.
