For anyone here that's familiar with Azumanga Daioh, I commissioned an artist to draw a cute crossover pic between that series and pone.https://derpibooru.org/2073769

Watch Azumanga Daioh? Yeah I'd recommend it. It's quite similar to the first two seasons of FIM imo {A Slice of Life series with a female cast, character driven humor, no romance, not much of an ongoing story and even some of the characters are kind of similar}, if aimed at an older audience. Though the pacing for the anime's first few episodes isn't very good. Also the anime and manga each have plenty of good exclusive content that isn't in the other medium. I'd recommend perhaps giving the manga a try first if possible.

The series is also from the same guy who did Yotsuba, so if you liked that series you'll like AZD too.

Was that the anime which required familiarity with the late 2000's anime fandom in order to get half the jokes? Including the characters cosplaying as Haruhi?

No, that was Lucky Star, which is also a Slice of Life anime about high school girls but the main character and some of her friends are Otaku which is where the references to things like Haruhi Suzumiya come from. Azumanga Daioh has some pop culture references (and general Japanese cultural references), but the jokes tend to more be about the characters' personalities and interactions with each other. I like both series, too.

Azumanga Daioh almost never brings up other anime that existed at the time. I think it only does this once when one character says her haircut was inspired by a Lupin the 3rd character. The humor in general was more based around the characters, Seinfeldian Conversation's, the occusional slapstick and a handful of times when things get surreal.

that said, Lucky Star is a gem and those references are super great if you get them.

though it's also bound to make me super nostalgic for that time of my life between late middle school and early high school. not that they were necessarily great times, but they were times.

However, the references to Haruhi, even when it was extremely popular and resonates with fans almost the same way EVA does, dates Lucky Star immensely.

It would also explain why some Ponies tend to be more magical than others of the same tribe. I haven't noticed any evidence of this myself. Twilight and Rainbow are both much more capable magically than others of their race, but in both cases it's a result of hard work and dedication, not natural talent. Twilight was studying magic and Rainbow was practicing flying since they were both little fillies. Off Topic:I just finished the second chapter of my book and both chapters came out to exactly 13 pages. Odd coincidence.

If I'd recommnend a Schoolgirl Series, it'd be Azumanga. It's not too pop-culture filled, fanservicey, or otherwise "anime"-ish to turn off people who don't watch anime. It's probably the best anime in its sub-genre. I'm still waiting on a remake/sequel that'll never come.

Back to ponies. FIM is now old enough that the target demographic is old enough to use the internet. I wonder what they think of the fandom. I've seen some comments on Friendship is Witchcraft about how people's family thought it was an official version of the show and let their kids watch it. There's nothing too bad in FIW, but it's still funny imagining a seven year old watching it.

[up] I was mostly referring to the younger margin of the demographic. I have no clue what FIM is actually marketed towards but I associate it with 3-9 year olds. If they were 6 in 2010 then they're.... 15 now.

It's 4-12, actually. Three and under generally don't have the attention span for this sort of show.

So the original demographic is well into high school by now, many already having graduated and moving on to higher education or the work force.

At this point, let's be real. It's all one giant demographic of young to tween girls at this point, with the bonus of adults still sticking with it.

An update on the Round Robin

Completed chapters:
1. Storyyeller
2. Kyler Thatch
3. Rytex
4. Rainbow
5. Lord Vatex
6. Metafour
7. Kegisak
Declined to participate: Sereg, Chariot

Awaiting response: Wryte

At the moment, we have 7 chapters done, and I'm waiting to hear back from Wryte, who is the only remaining person signed up who hasn't either written a chapter or ducked out. But I figured I should post an update just in case there is anyone else out there who wants to join in. Likewise, if Sereg feels up to now, I'd be happy to give him another shot.

Post of the Day #2558

I've always thought of Celestia and Luna being the sort of Married to the Job types, and put their subjects before their emotions. (Comics notwithstanding.) Plus, they wouldn't feel comfortable dating a "mortal", since so many of their subjects see the princesses as above them, rather than as an equal. So they're just like: "Ah, screw it. It's easier being single." Or at least that's how I see it in regards to cannon.

[up] I've read many fan-works where Celestia and Luna not only dated multiple ponies in the past, but they also got married and had (mortal) foals. That'd certainly explain Blueblood at least.

It was always unlikely in canon, but Flurry Heart seems to joss the series. She's the first aiicorn foal, so either no alicorn has given birth before or they've never had alicorn offspring.

I've read fics where it implied that Cadance was one of Celestia's descendents, and would explain why she was easily able to adopt her into the royal family.

Also read one where Celestia had a hell of a time trying to convince Twilight that she wasn't a virgin princess and shenanigans ensued.

[up] I know of one fic that explains that Cadance is Celestia's niece because she put Luna down as her mother on the adoption papers. Cue Luna calling herself Cadance's mother and Cadance being really uncomfortable.

Celestia should have just been Cadance's adopted mother, in my opinion. It makes things a lot easer.

..So, where exactly has the idea of Cadenza being Celestia's niece originated from? Because I have never heard her being Celestia's niece in the show proper.

I mean, there's Celestia's nephew. Which is another can of worms because of "whose sibling is he from"?

What, Luna's exile to the moon allowed her conjugal visits?

Because we simply don't know a thing about her family, or how the royals are related to anyone, really. All we know from the show is that Celestia and Luna are sisters, and that's about it.

So the fans speculate, and since Cadence was the only other alicorn besides the rulers for a long time, it was only natural to assume a family connection. It's as simple as that, really.
