A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules

So if Fluttershy is Samuel L. Jackson, and Samuel L Jackson has a purple lightsaber, it naturally follows that if Fluttershy were a unicorn, her magic would be purple.
...I should get some sleep.
A new Friendship is Manly has appeared
My two cents for the topic from yesterday. I imagine Pinkie Pie would say the more kid-friendly version of colorful metaphors, like "darn" and "dang" and "Shazbot."
Come on! Let's bless them all until we get fershnickered!Post of the Day #1886
Also, they apparently whited out already just after getting to Viridian. Stupid wild Tailows with Mega Punch.
I don't know. It's one of those situations where I'm pretty sure I've heard it before in a cartoon but I can't think of any specific examples.
This song needs more love.Nah, I think you're just imagining it.

Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.Or premiering on the channel. It's the first time they're officially available to that market, in any case.

Well it definitely showed up in The Hunchback Of Notre Dame. Along with "eternal damnation".
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayWell, showing that they're borrowing from the comics does open up all sorts of other stuff, which could be either really fun or really bad depending on which stuff they use.
INB 4 Reflections adaptation
-Sets up soap box-
-steps onto the box-
-clears throat-
"Evil alternate universe" stories aren't just dead horses, they're downright skeletal. Particularly in a fandom where 'evil element' fics started from pretty much day one, the entire concept is so tried and overdone that the sheer dryness of it would cause a new desert to spontaneously erupt around the printing office.
On the other hand, using the concept of alternate realities to explore the grief and guilt of someone who just lost someone very close to them is a fascinating idea, as is the idea of exploring moment of weakness in otherwise strong characters.
Reflections has many flaws, but it's premise is not one of them. If anything, I would argue that the greatest weakness of Reflections is that the mane six were there at all—allowing Celestia to move through the arc as its protagonist and to solve the problem through her own actions would have been much more satisfying, both in terms of the narrative of the arc and for Celestia's character in the larger comic and universe. Lack of Mane Six may have also allowed the arc to be more mundane and portray a less arbitrarily world-ending conflict that clashes with the rest of the tone of the story.
Nevertheless, the concepts of the arc and Celestia's story in it are beautiful, and far more interesting than the initial hints of an evil mane six would have ever been. In spite of its faults Reflection still remains one of my favourite arcs of the IDW comic, and of the FIM franchise in general.

Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes. That might have worked if it wasn't for A: The actual story itself being poorly written, and B: The comics themselves constantly advertising the alternate versions of the cast, only to do nothing with it and then mock those who were rightfully disappointed.
I dunno, if some other piece of fiction promised or brought up a really cool idea, only to then actually be about a poorly written romance, I'm not so sure that people would be cutting it slack. I mean hey, look at the Twilight books/movies, which have some interesting ideas but end up wasting them on crappy romance story.

Dangit, I specifically didn't mention that because I didn't want to start up a whole thing.

I see where you're coming from and I do think the premise itself is workable, I really don't think it worked in the context that the arc tried to use it in. Setting the story up so that Celestia essentially destabilizes the multiverse for the sake of romance really doesn't gel well with her established characterization and the resolution with good Sombra absorbing a bunch of evil or whatever was just weird. Not to mention that the whole Celestia/Good Sombra pairing just sounds like something out of a crack fic to start with. There was potential there, but the execution just felt very off to me, because the whole Celestia/Sombra pairing just felt forced. Then again, I'm not really much of a fan of introducing any sort of canon romantic interest for the main characters anyway, so that might just be my bias talking.
I'd be fine with the notion of exploring personal loss in Celestia's past, but I can't say I think that that arc did a particularly good job of it.
Now that I think about it, I think that overall one of the main issues was a lack of focus. It didn't know whether it wanted to be a dramatic story about Celestia dealing with her past or an adventure story in another universe. If it had been one or the other it would've been fine, but it tried to have its cake and eat it too.
Anyway, I need to get to bed now.

Reaction Image RepositoryYou know, between that and Big Mac/Sugar Belle, I'm starting to feel like the writers at MLP are becoming more interested in romances for the main characters, but are erring on the side of Crack Ship pairings because of the worry that legitimizing any one ship would result in hurt feelings on the part of its competitors.
Like, if they did an episode that canonized Cheerimac, it could be taken as a slap in the face to Fluttermac and Marblemac shippers. Sugarmac at least has the benefit of letting them all down evenly so no part of the fandom has to be bitter at another part of the fandom for winning the ship.
It's been my experience in certain fandoms - coughcoughAVATARcoughhack - that the canon declaring an Official Couple out of one of the popular ships only makes the Ship-to-Ship Combat worse.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.ATLA was always much more serious about shipping though (and then Korra turned that up to eleven)
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's Play

Which reminds me:
Shining Armor pretty much never uses profanity in normal cases. However, due to being part of the military, he can basically switch on his Drill Sergeant mode, with all the swearing that implies.
