A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.
All of the usual forum rules
apply. In addition, please remember that the thread is discussing a kids' show, and it's primarily focused on the work itself, not the fanfic — in particular, we don't want to see lewdness creeping in.

You still don't get it?
First off, the current system is highly random since it's based around where you happen to end up in line. Second, there are large hidden costs too. People's time is valuable. In fact the current system is so wasteful that it'd be difficult not to improve it.
When you think about it, the current situation is equivalent (mod irrationality) to the Apples actully paying people to stand around all day. The Apples end up with less money and everyone else gets nothing important done all day. It's a terrible system all around.
I think the only way you could justify not having an auction is if you claimed that cider is somehow too important to be distrbuted on the basis of money and that people won't just trade it anyway. But in that case, the best option is to make it free and give it away in an explicit lottery. But I'm sure you're not aruging for that, are you?
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayWhy do you keep using scare quotes anyway? This is all just basic economics. Or basic buisness sense, which the Apples have approximately zero of.
Because they're getting less money then the market price. They're actually giving up money in order to make people waste time.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayNo I fail to see how how a damn auction is a good idea, at all. Have the entire town standing around bidding on mug after mug.. with the prices getting flat out ridiculous over and over.. hell just trying to have it with THAT many ponies, it would take forever just getting through the first mug. Not to mention, again, just how damn badly it screws up the price.
No, fixed price, know going in exactly how much you are paying for it, fair to everypony, the sooner they show up, the more likely they are to get some, versus, you know, getting screwed over by the entire auction thing jacking up the prices
Improve supply, get a few more stands set up, yeah. Improve the existing system, not pull some random, convoluted scheme that makes no dang sense.
@ Story: Ah, that. I don't think it's quite equivalent, but yeah they are getting less money than usual. I think there is one big upside to this that we're not taking into consideration that the Apples probably have. With the system they've got going on right now, they've essentially turned cider season into a town-wide holiday. The social benefits for everyone involved probably outweigh the economic downsides.
@ Seraphem: You seem to be arguing against a strawman. That's not the system that Storyyeller proposed.

This "faculty lot" you speak of sounds like a place of great power...@Star: I have to agree with story and say that those "quotes" you keep using are kind of dickish. You were worried earlier about coming off as standoffish, and this definitely doesn't help. You don't have to participate in every discussion, y'know.
Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectWhy is an auction the better option, here?
Why not produce it all, bottle it up and ship it to a retailer to sell it individually? Because the retailer can only have so much on the shelves at any given time there's less chance of getting caught in line and not getting any, as you can just come in at the next re-stock. And given how popular it is any retailer would be willing to pay hoof-over-fist to have the chance to sell it exclusively, so the Apples could actually charge more for bulk than they could individually by pitting the competing retailers against one another. Price is levelled out and the Apple see more profits.
I mean, Montreal Cider is a big thing in the autumn, and I don't go to the orchard or to an auction to get it, I go to the SAQ.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.Becuase 'retail' isn't exactly a big thing in Equestria. Outside Filthy Rich's place, and would end up costing everyone more to boot. And they can only make it during a set time of the year, so the overall amount is still limited.
Yes they need to work on their system, but it's still better then auctioning it... how does it make any sense? Increase supply, which they DID, and maybe get a few extra stalls set up, which I'm sure the Mane 6 would be glad to help with as well. Problem solved, no need for some over complicated system that leaves everything a question.
@ Kegisak: I don't think their production scale is large enough to support that business model, or the demand. Plus it removes a lot of the festival air that surrounds it. Instead of an event, it would end up being just another seasonal tradition, like eggnog at christmas.

So, I'm just going to pop in and say a couple things: First off, I'm sorry for any dickish moments I've had on either this thread or the two threads that were lost {The original WA thread and the Yack Fest thread}. I've been really negative and depressed lately for a wide Varity of reasons, and I've had a tendency to rant way too much on this thread {The random bitching I did about Executive Meddling that screwed up the Sonic Archie comics, and the fandom rant I did on Halloween} due to both this and a couple things that have pissed me off to no end. I'll try to be more positive or at least less ranty from here on out.
In happier news, my copy's of Volume's 1 and 2 of the FIM comics arrived in the mail today {V1 has the first 4 issues, while V2 has the next 4 issues of the comic}. Having actual physical copies of these comics is pretty awesome if you ask me.
Okay, change of subject.
Let's talk about saddles. Why do the ponies of Equestria have them? What purpose do they serve, without human riders?
http://h0useb0und.tumblr.com/Yeah, let's agree to disagree on the cider thing. Clearly we're not quite coming to a consensus
Saddles...to keep their backs warm in winter? That's why Twi wore one in Winter Wrap Up.

@ Kyler: I think that's a good idea, but she would be an alicorn with Twilight or Cadance's build instead of Celestia or Luna. Princess Tutu is a scrawny little thing after all.
And for those that don't know this anime, it is my favorite show in the world, bar none:
