A thread to discuss My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic and the tie-in media.

2/3 of which I have not seen yet...
I think I've still missed... Saddle Row, Not-Christmas, and one other? It was one of the one in sequence with those. I missed three, then saw Flutter Brudder. And I guess I missed the one after that if there was one.
Birthright: an original web novel about Dragons, the Burdens of Leadership, and Mangoes.Ah, Spice Up Your Life would be the one. I actually did catch Applejack's Day Off. I quite enjoyed it, because at the time I was regularly staying around an hour late from work every night(and occasionally missing the last train and having to walk home), and it inspired me to evaluate my working habits and see what I could chop out.
Turns out not much, the main reason I was staying late was because I had to send out task result emails and because we hads so goddamn many tasks running at once they almost always got finished at the end of the night so I had to rapid-fire four or five emails(which involves checking the spreadsheets for error, adding all the additional info like man-hours, and analyzing the results and composing it in the email).
Still! Principle of the thing. I did wind up improving my efficiency in some areas in the end.

Spice Up Your Life I wasn't quite so hot on. Couldn't really put my finger on why. Applejack's Day Off was certainly a fun episode.
I do definitely think that Saddle Row Review is one of the best, though. Great acting, good gags, snappy writing, all the things I love about this show with the exception of the fact the episode didn't have a musical number.
"Spice Up Your Life" was kind of lacking in jokes, and Rarity brushed dangerously close to Aesop Amnesia. (Though, thinking about it logically afterward, I do think Rarity was in character, and this episode's aesop was more nuanced than people give it credit for anyway.) They made up for it with a cool musical number and making the new characters cute as hell.
Yeah, the new characters were very cute, and I think that's mostly what saved the episode. And I also really like how Rarity and Pinkie Pie realized "oh wait, we were approaching this wrong. Let's switch jobs because that's what we're good at." That was definitely a nice bit.
It wasn't a bad episode at all, just... it felt not as interesting after Flutter Brudder, which I really liked. Lacking in jokes can definitely contribute.

The only episode I kind of disliked this season was Newbie Dash. First of all, the plot holes. The entire situation was a plot hole. Who retires two weeks before a show without any notice? And why doesn't the reserve know the routine? The whole point of having reserves is so they can sit in on practices and learn the routine, so they can fill in on a moment's notice. The Wonderbolts are one dysfunctional team. And the events of the plot felt like Aesop Amnesia for the entire show up to this point. From the very beginning, this show has been preaching that our differences are what make us great, and you shouldn't change yourself to please anyone. RD pretending to be the rest of the mane six would have worked in season 1, but by season 6 she should have known better
What's odd about these last few episodes is that their messages seem more applicable to adults than to preteen girls. "Applejack's Day Off" was about eliminating workplace inefficiency. "Flutter Brutter" was an exhortation to get a job and stop mooching off your parents. And "Spice Up Your Life" (a borderline case, I guess) was about how sometimes you need to change to fit in, and sometimes you need to take a stand for your principles, and how important it is to know the difference.
is because flawed human beings interacting in extreme circumstances is more engaging than people just fighting against hordes of mindless monsters.
No... I'd much rather see people dealing with monsters and other fun stuff then just more cynical, boring, asshole being idiotic assholes, for the sake of being idiotic assholes because "People suck!"
Who retires two weeks before a show without any notice?
Who said he didn't give notice? We don't know the details. Could be he got on offer he had to take immediately. Or he gave his notice, did plan on doing the show, but the Bolt's told him not to worry about it and let him go, figuring they'd give Dash an easy first official show. Low stakes, small crowd made up of her home town. Perfect place for a newbie to get the feel for this type of thing.
And why doesn't the reserve know the routine? The whole point of having reserves is so they can sit in on practices and learn the routine, so they can fill in on a moment's notice.
It was established in Rarity Investigates that not every reserve is trained for every show. They keep a roster with different reserves being set as fill ins for each show. RD simply wasn't the chosen fill in for the show. And yes it WOULD make more sense to let the fill in handle that show, but see above about letting her first official show be a small show for her home town.
The Wonderbolts are one dysfunctional team
Nope, very strong team and very very functional, again that type of nicknaming and teasing is 100% true to how stuff like that goes. it's never a sign of them disliking her, not malicious, not anything but a "Welcome to the team" gesture from them and them accepting her AS one of them. Pretty damn solid.
Ummmm, no shit.. hence why it was clear from the start that RD was fully and totally in the wrong for trying to do that?

I've been on professional teams before (a professional choir and touring theater company) as well as a travel soccer team, and the whole thing seemed like a mess to me. The embarrassing nicknames thing wasn't the problem here. Everyone does that. I have embarrassing nicknames of my own. It's just how disorganized they seem to be. Not having the first reserve learn the routine doesn't make any sense

It's kind of a given at this point that Twilight is basically the only pony in Equestria who knows how to organize things properly. I mean, basically everyone else tops out at "functional" when it comes to efficiency and organization.
