I read The Wonderful Wizard of Oz as a kid, but I barely remember it. I wonder if I should reread it sometime. I do know it's a lot different than the classic movie though.

Like the page says, the anime adaptation is one of the most faithful adaptations of the first Oz book in existence. Like, remember how Glinda was the only good witch in the film? Well in the book, and thus the anime, there was also the good witch of the north who helps Dorathy when she first arrives in Oz. This is significant becuase she DOESN'T know the magic slippers can be used to take Dorothy home. Then, after Dorothy kills the Witch of the West the Wizard tells her to visit Glinda in the south and SHE tells Dorothy how to use the slippers. In the movie Glinda knew the whole time but never told Dorothy about it because she's a dick.

Well this isn't the only animated adaptation of The Wizard of Oz. You may have seen another one. Though in my opinion the anime is the best adaptation.
I actually just watched Oz the Great and Powerful a week ago. Did not have a great times. The Wicked Witch of the West was portrayed as an idiot, and screams all her lines. Plus it has the witch of the East not the West, who controls the flying monkeys. Plus there aren't any magic slippers, Ruby or otherwise. My point it it isn't a very good prequel.

Oz The Great and Powerful?!
(whispers in collar) Take the shot. Take the shot.
https://youtu.be/_1F5HhUvFbM?si=csgwerqELcG6615qWow! This is still on the top of the Western Animation.
Hello, remember me? I was freakishly obsessed with cheese sandwich.
I also have an account, uhm.
ppppppppfeiufiofuiorjfadkfbnjkdflaosigjbkghuiafjkldjnbaghkdI remember a nineties cartoon that seemed more in style with the whimsical MGM movie.
Concerning your exposure to anime, I remember feeling the same way. I used to watch stuff like Ox Tales and Samurai Pizza Cats and thinking they had a very "different" style and feel to standard cartoons due to how they were animated and how more awkwardly the voices were dubbed. It was only around the time the Pokemon anime was released that I finally got it was the result of it being a Japanese export.

Oh man! I loved the hell out of Samurai Pizza Cats.
I also watched Sabre Rider and the Star Sheriffs.
I remember it came on right after Sailor Moon, so I'd turn on the TV early and often caught the end of Sailor Moon. This is actually the reason I got into that show in the first place.
Hello, remember me?
No?
I was freakishly obsessed with cheese sandwich.
Oh, now I remember you.
Also, there is one advantage to not using anything from the movie - the book is public domain, the movie is not. Anything you use from the movie that wasn't in the book could theoretically fall under copyright. There's a similar situation with King Kong.
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayYou know, without the comma, that takes on a completely different meaning.
How the heck are you daft?
Blind Final Fantasy 6 Let's PlayThe thing about that 1930's movie is that they cut a lot of stuff out, whereas the anime does not. I've already listed two major things, but did you know that on the way to the Emerald City, or possibly on their way to the Wicked Witch of the West's place, the gang finds a whole city where everything, including the citizens, are made of china? Or that the flying monkeys only followed the Witch's orders because she had a magic hat? And the anime doesn't stop when the first book ends, because it continues on to adapt three more novels into animated format and deals with the REAL villains of Oz, the Nomes. Lots of stuff adapts the first book, but the only thing besides the anime I can think of that even touches on the content of any of the later books is Return to Oz.
