[up][up]I definitely need to play VI one day. The final battle in this one definitely had some kick-ass music (even if I had no idea what the hell they were saying). I still think I prefer this for Sephiroth's "main" theme, though.

Reflecting on the game I just finished, I am certainly glad I played it. While the plot did have a few problems (translation and making sense of the whole picture, mainly), the storytelling itself I thought was pretty good. For example, I mentioned before that even knowing Aerith's fate long beforehand, the relevant scene was so well-done that it still affected me. The gameplay also grew on me after a while, since you both seemed to take more damage than typical and healing spells worked better than usual in these kind of games, turning it into a game of managing your rapidly-shifting health bars and using the damage you've taken as a resource in the form of limit breaks.

There did seem to be a lot missing from the story, though. Some sort of denouement for one, but I also feel like a lot of exposition about Cloud's fuzzy memories was left out (the only thing I got was that Cloud was experimented on in some way to be made a Sephiroth clone (?) and "Oh yeah, silly me, that was my buddy Zack the whole time! I must have just imagined I was him, despite knowing things I could not possibly know if I wasn't actually Zack").

I also would have liked a bit more variety in terms of Materia. As it is, just about every Materia in the game is some sort of magic attack or something that really only works with a magic attack, with a relative lack of physical Materia. Magic Materia make you a better caster but also make you squishy, which means that you'll use some cast members a lot more than others since there seems to be a relatively even split among your party between those who work best as casters and those who work best as beaters.

Fun fact: You can sit around and not use Omnislash and Sephiroth will eventually get his turn. He'll just use a basic attack, though, which Cloud will counterattack for the kill.

@Irish: You going to try to take on the Bonus Bosses or go for the Golden Chocobo? tongue I actually went to the trouble of getting the Knights of the Round materia, which is so stupid powerful that the final boss actually gets a power boost if you have that materia when you fight him because he'd be too easy otherwise.

It also has a hilariously long animation, on par with Supernova.

And now I'm going to bed.

Oh, and I almost forgot. I feel kind of let down by how they used Sephiroth. The flashback backstory I got for him in the first disc started to set up something promising, but I think he went insane a bit too quickly. Then, after his most famous scene, he briefly mind controls Cloud again to kick off his plan and... sits on his ass for the entire second disc. Then when you fight him at the end, I can't even remember if he gets any dialogue.

On top of that, I still don't think they ever explained how in the world he could do half the things he does in the game. Where's my "phase through walls" Materia? 'Cause Sephiroth seems to have it, somehow.

It's definitely worth a look, though the limitations of the console means the story is much, much, much more laconic than 7's. Also depends on which script you're going by, the original translation or the updated one on the GBA. Both are good, the former's even more brief, but still gets the plot and characterization beats while providing a lot of Narm Charm, the latter's more technical and accurate, but isn't as fun.

9 was probably the only Final Fantasy game I personally played through. I always watched my brother play 7.

@Irish: I think what's going on with that is that Sephiroth's actual physical body is actually located in the Northern Crater for the entire game. The other ones you see throughout the game are shape-shifting Jenova-cell infected hosts. Or at least I think that's how it was. I haven't played that game in a while.

Okay going to bed for real now.

[up]I'm not trying to sound sarcastic here or anything, but to me that starts to make sense, and then somehow leaves me more confused. I mean, unless Jenova cells can just do that. It does make sense that in some fashion those were projections of the real Sephiroth, so that starts to clear things up.

One thing that I will say in this game's favor: playing it has made me more interested in some of the later main Final Fantasies.

Not something like XI or XIII, though. Heavens, no. Like, VIII to X, I would think.

This rivals Fable 2's final boss in terms of easy.

I wonder if the remake will change up the final battle. Like, make it so Sepiroth isn't programmed to die in 1 hit with any attack.

Okay, but it isn't like the climactic final battle has him going down in one hit, that one where you Omni him to death is like that scene in any movie where the seemingly defeated villain makes one last attempt to kill the hero and gets swatted down.

@Irish: JT is right, the real Sephiroth is in the crater for the entire game. That scene near the end of disc one where you find him in a crystal or whatever is the first time you see his real body.

I actually sort of prefer the interpretation that Jenova is the real villain and Sephy was basically her puppet the whole time, but Square seems to be shying away from that because I guess bishonen are more interesting than weird world destroying aliens.

I do agree that Sephy being put in the background for disc 2 is a bit of a mistake. Overall disc 1 is the best part of that game IMO.

So you're saying FF 7 is basically Xenogears?

Nah, there was a good reason Xenogears' second disc was the way it was. Xenogears was so perfect that playing it was like looking into the Arc of the Covenant. Square had no choice but to truncate disc 2 so the players could withstand the experience.

More seriously though, Xenogears has way more in common with Chrono Trigger.

I'd like a Pony game similar to Dokkan Battle.

I found Panty and Stocking on the internet, and I plan on watching it once I finish up Azumanga Daioh. I've heard that it's completly insane to the point that it makes Kill La Kill make normal by comparsion. It sounds like the Anime equivalent of South Park from what I've heard of it.

@Story: I'm not sure what the exact reasoning was, but I think they did that so they can use the first three days as a sort of adjustment period for the kids.

I've completely forgotten the context behind that. Could you explain, please?

Also, I just saw Avengers Age Of Ultron. I think Xmen!Quicksilver was better than Avengers!Quicksilver, but the rescuing people in front of the train thing was cool. Also, who the heck was the red guy? A lot of the plot of Ultron doesn't make much sense, which is also a common criticism I read back when the movie came out.

I might be a bit too used to reading comics and dealing with their shenanigans; I've become sort of immune to narratives going pear-shaped. Nanomachines, Unobtanium, DNA and a magic space rock make robot superhero? Fuck it, why not.

Plus, you know, the many other issues with the plot. Which I honestly couldn't name, cause like I said: I've gotten way too used to just rolling with stuff I guess.
