I wouldn't call improving drastically from Friday an accomplishment.

Well, I don't like embedding videos, sorry. But there are a few songs I prefer covers of.

1. Goo Goo Dolls' cover of Give A Little Bit by Supertramp

I love Johnny's voice on that track, sorry, and it's the version I listened to most once the live album and Let Love In came out. I grew up with GGD.

2. Rufus Wainwright's cover of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen

I love Rufus's voice on this track, too. It's also the version I grew up with pretty much, so yeah.

And then I have one where the cover ties with the original.

3. David Cook and Simple Minds- TIE- Don't You (Forget About Me)

I grew up with the original (The live single is fantastic, too), but David Cook is my favorite solo artist and I love his cover, too. This one is a tie for me.

Anyone agree with me on anything?

I find the "Night Version" of Duran Duran's "Girls on Film" much better than the original:

My sister's in a similar boat. She sang the song in choir class and wanted me to find it. I told her that several artists had done it, so I played her some of the versions. She didn't like Cohen's voice, but when I got to Rufus, she said she liked his voice a lot more and downloaded that one.

The version of Broken Social Scene's "Lover's Spit" with Feist singing that appears on Bee Hives is pretty awesome, though I wouldn't say it's necessarily better than the You Forgot It In People version: Kevin Drew vs. Feist.

On a similar note, there's Faith No More's B-Side re-recording of "As The Worm Turns" with Mike Patton singing - the original was on We Care A Lot and had Chuck Mosley on vocals. I kind of like Chuck Mosley as a vocalist and think he fit the band's sound for those early albums, but the Patton version just has more energy to it. Oh, and it's sort of interesting that there's some possibly unintentional The Cover Changes the Meaning here - Mosley sort of sounds like he's genuinely empathizing with the subject of the song, while Patton sounds pretty sarcastic (especially on the line "Listen, man, I know that things are really rough...")

D-Train's cover of "Shadow of Your Smile" trumps Sinatra's original, IMO.

[up] I've got a cover of that song by Tommy McCook on an instrumental reggae compilation, and actually had no idea it was originally Sinatra till just now.

This one is a double whammy of alternative versions. I like it better than both the Beatles version and Jeff Beck's other variations of the cover.

Edit: better quality video.

I prefer Jethro Tull's "Wond'ring Aloud, Again" over the album version of "Wond'ring Aloud" from Aqualung. It's a fascinating extended version of a short yet sweet acoustic song that seems to be a combination of two songs in total.
