Basically, the question I'm asking is:which of these two infamous comic cities is worse?

This is like comparing being bitten by a rabid dog on a leg and being bitten by a grown lion on the throat.

Mega City One is far worse.

There is slightly less corruption in Mega City One than there is in the worst versions of Gotham. Every other thing about Mega City One is far worse than Gotham City.

Am I a good man or a bad man?

Mega City One because you can move out of Gotham.

I remember reading somewhere online that, if you add up all the Gotham City residents who have been killed over the years, it should be enough to leave the city completely depopulated. Anyone know whether that's true or not?

It has really low property values and job opportunities open up fast so people are constantly moving in.

Mega-City One is way worse. Even if you do move out, most of the rest of the world is worse than its corresponding location in the DC Universe.

It depends. Are we counting all the continuities as valid, like Grant Morrison does? Does the Cataclysm earthquake count, or is it 'cheating' since it was a 'simple' natural incident, not man-made? Are we counting the Contagion plague too?

Even if you do, MC-1 has had the Apocalypse War, Necropolis, Judgement Day, Chaos Day, and Bachman's insurrection. And that stuff's all canon.

Pros and Cons of Gotham City. The Pros You can move out. The Bat Family patrols (Could be seen as a con) Most crime happens in the slums. Upper class areas are normally safe. (Normally)

The Cons The Joker and the other homicidal criminally insane residents of Arkham Asylum terrorize it. The police force is mostly corrupt in stories set in Batman's early career. It seems to get little daylight. Which is bad news.

Pros and Cons of Mega City One.

Pros A mostly non corrupt justice system Judge Dredd Judge Anderson Awesome Technology Impressive Skyscrapers and views Some amusing stories and sights

Cons Almost everyone is a criminal You can't move out and if you did you'd go into a dangerous, irradiated and barren wasteland The Dark Judges made it their personal project A highly strict and non flexible set of rules bordering on tyranny and a police state A psychopathic kid criminal mastermind The Chief Judges either get used or turn out to be insane A lack of manpower to report to all reported crimes (or is that just the 2012 movie)? Has seen A LOT of disasters as Hot Scientist mentioned above

Anything I missed?

[up]Actually, I think the manpower issue applies to the comics, as well. It certainly does after Chaos Day.

[up][up][up] Mega City One is much bigger than Gotham, though. So even if it's had more catastrophes, the odds of any given individual being a victim of those catastrophes isn't necessarily the same.

Bordering?

A psychopathic kid criminal mastermind

Just for the record, he's an adult now.

That actually brings up another aspect of Gotham - nobody ever ages. This would be a big pro for someone in their 20s or 30s, a minor pro or a neutral aspect to someone in their 40s or above, and a pretty big con for teenagers and children.

Mega City One is much bigger than Gotham, though. So even if it's had more catastrophes, the odds of any given individual being a victim of those catastrophes isn't necessarily the same.

50% of population died in the Apocalypse War, 5% in Necropolis, and 75% in Chaos Day. Judgement Day also took a toll, but there were never any numbers given.

Did Batman ever say how many died in the likes of No Man's Land?

It's perhaps also worth noting that in the movie, the per capita reported crime rate is 25% that of modern America.

Funny thing, James Gordon Jr. seemed to age like 20 years in 10 years or so once his mother moved him from Gotham to Chicago.

That's one of the reasons why I like the Judge Dredd comics for aging. I'm sure I read that he had cancer at some point?

Even so, the aging thing becomes as much of a joke as remaining ageless after some point. Just look at Dick Tracy, who's been getting vaguely older and older for decades and decades now.

Dreddverse characters age in real time. Judge Dredd has been going since 1977, and Dredd is now 36 years older than he was when it began. We saw America Beeny's birth in 1996, and she's now 19 years old.

Well, Depending on the Artist it can be hard to tell that Dredd's nearly 70.

[up] Dredd always has to keep himself fit for the law. And who knows what cybernetic implants he could have? With all that technology they can't lengthen lifespans?

Yeah, I know about that. I was talking about what we see of his face.

I believe the only cybernetic implants he has are his eyes, which got ripped out by his future zombie form.

However, he does have access to anti-aging treatments, which give him (and most judges outside Psi Division) reduced biological age.

Concerning that "depopulated Gotham" theory, why don't more people move out of there?

At least most supervillains who reside there aren't the kind that can level city blocks with their hands, unlike most of those across DC USA?
