So I just started trying to get into this thing.
Are the matches all done by AI? How does this work, exactly? And how the hell am I supposed to know the odds?

"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."- All AI, yes.
- People bet play money on who they think will win. The losing pot is spread evenly among the winners based on the size of their bets.
- Odds are only made available to subscribers, so pay real money or pay close attention to matches before betting. (Subscribers also get larger bailouts in case of bankruptcy and also get to request matches on Thursday night from 9-midnight Eastern.)
That's... dumb.
So the only way to have any inkling of who to bet on is to pay real money? Or watch the stream 24/7 feverishly taking notes and making a tier list of all seven billion freaking characters?
I thought the whole point was something for people with gambling problems to not lose all their money.
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."I think the gambling is secondary to the silliness of watching random bullshit characters fight. And what, you think there's no tactic to betting?
- Always bet on hitbox
- Always bet on waifu
- Never bet on Jojo
- Always bet on SORD
- Always bet on Aquaman, Omega Tom Hanks, and Barney.
Those seem like good rules, I guess.
Though, does Waifu refer to any "waifu" in general? Or the specific character "Twitch Waifu" or some shit?
Because I can see why it would be the latter based on the crap I saw go down with her last night. There were two rounds where neither her nor the character against her (Orchid from Killer Instinct, I think) were on screen whatsoever, and she won each one. I have no idea what happened.
"It's so hard to be humble, knowing how great I am."Your waifu. Everyonems waifu. Anyones waifu.
I have necee drunk so much in one weekend. Send help. Saltybet has mever ben so much fund.
One dangerous but effective way to learn which characters to bet on is to listen to a SonicMega song without muting it.
Note: when people say "never bet on DBZ" (or variants), that doesn't mean "always bet against DBZ". It's a comment on their unreliability and tendency to win or lose based on poor AI and mexidamage. Though there are some standout winners (Ghost Nappa, Radish, most Brolys, and possibly Yamcha and Nail; also consider Gokus that have actual height).
The "waifu" rule stems from how many young female Japanese characters are downright overpowered, especially if they're from things like Touhou, Melty Blood, Kanon or Pocket Fighter. Also because many bettors are sad people, but...

Jojos Bizarre Adventure characters also tend to have shitty AI, as do most Naruto characters (Sasuke and Itachi notwithstanding)

hiGUNDAM BATTLE WHILE EMIYA PLAYS! LITTLE BUSTERS VS. AIRMOTO GOKU VS. PICOLLO! SONIC RACING UPPERCUT VS SHANG TSUNG
Thats what you missed this Shaker
hiAnd now you're likely to miss a Shaker if you ever go more than four hours without watching, due to the new format cycling between regular matches, tier-based tourney brackets and shaker requests.
Another new group of fighters added today. Lots of Pokémon, X-Men: Children of the Atom, the last few characters from Alien Challenge...
So apparently there's been a Rare Reimu made that can beat Rare Akuma. I went all in on Akuma against her and made 1.7M because everyone bet against him. Feels real good.
Anyone still betting?
"Blowing it up always works" -RIP Goblin Boommaster, 2014-2015S still bet occasionally.
An Average TeenI bet once in awhile. Think I saw that Reimu...and lost money by betting on Rare Akuma.
I seem to make most of my fortune betting against Rarity though. Which is weird, because the version used doesn't seem weak at all but gets scammed out regularly... (by a limbo turtle the first time, and by what appeared to be Shiki Tohno with a tribal mask.)
Been watching for a bit. The real draw is definitely the idea of watching characters from every fighting game and quite a few not from any video game at all duke it out. The betting isn't really all that important as having more money only allows you to bet more money. Betting often is the key to getting certain small bonuses, but the best way to make money is to just get on when there's a tourney going, since if you make any bet at all you're basically guaranteed 1000.
There are a lot of memes about who to bet on and all that, but the basics are:
1. Always/Never bet on DBZ. (The quality and viability of them can change drastically even among edits of the same character... eg. There's a yamcha that kills in three normal punches and has tons of health but his ai is kind of bad, so betting on him is a coinflip )
2. Always bet on Waifu ( Anime girls are always safe bets, for some reason they tend to be pretty powerful touhou or 2hu as they call it, are usually very overpowered )
3. Always bet on sword ( If they have a sword and the other doesn't, bet on them )
4. Always bet hitboxes( Some characters are smaller and therefore wont be hit by taller characters )
5. Always bet MS Paint ( if a character shows up and looks awful, there's a good chance they're coded badly and stupidly powerful as a result )
6. SCAM ( Said when a character has some ability to fly or otherwise render themselves undamageable, since what usually happens is one of the two land a couple hits and then the match will end by time-out, leading to TERRORISTS WIN and more recently THANKS OBAMA )
7. Clutch ( character scores a win with very little health left )
8. Mexican/Canadian ( Mexican (mexibeam, mexidamage, mexihealth ) means they have a lot of it or they are strong. Canadian means the opposite. )
9. Back to the salt mines ( being out of money gives you ten dollars to work your way back up with. This takes a long time. )
Disregard these rules anytime, but especially when the super OP characters show up. Dark Donald, Rare Akuma, Rare Reimu, Barney, Omega Tiger Woods, and the Dopefish are few I can remember off-hand.
One good way to get a better idea of who to bet for is to use the nightbot commands to check the author of the character. Chat usually all over the place, so don't rely on it to win. Other than that, if you play mugen or watch character beatdown videos and stuff like that, you can get a good sense on who will win without making some crazy spreadsheet.

How many characters does the site have now?
: Character yell memes are actually part of a secret message that has yet to be finished.
Just look at the ones we have so far:
So we have A-E-R-O. What letter is next? Or is it stopping at a wind spell?
