I was wondering if this board has a policy on how long you have to spoiler tag things from books?

The Video Games board makes you spoiler tag things for six months, although you can stop earlier for a high profile game. The manga and fanfiction boards make you spoiler tag things for five posts when a new chapter is out, so everyone has time to go read it. The film board makes you spoiler tag things until the DVD comes out.

Does this board have anything like that, or is it up to the tropers? Because I was thinking that it should be something like "Spoiler tags until the book comes out in paperback".

Any thoughts, literature board?

There's no formal policy on spoilers here, IIRC, but "until the PB comes out" seems a reasonable allowance. I know that's how they do it on the Baen's Bar forums, in regards to snerkers (spoilers, basically). Anything for a book that's out only in hardback, it goes in the Snerkers forum, has a huge spoiler space at the top, or has "snerkers" in the subject line. After the PB release, no such precaution is required.

I don't know how well that will work as a general rule, because more and more books are skipping hardcover altogether. I also don't really see a need for a blanket guideline.

I personally feel a spoiler policy simply should be "Hide spoilers until released".

After book is released for general public to purchase... It's open season.

You want to avoid spoilers after release? Stay away from forums until you hit the back cover!

What about talking about books in threads that aren't about that book? It's reasonable enough to ask people to stay away from a book's thread until they've read it, but if they can be potentially spoiled for any book in any thread, then it becomes impossible to be certain of avoiding spoilers, unless you're sure you've read every book you care about spoilers for.

Assuming that outsider's opinions are allowed...

I would not like be spoiled about the Twist from Work X in thread Y. I would recommend spoilering any such info.
