So with the recent global terrorism alert I realised that we don't have a place to discuss such events as they happen and how they are being dealt with/reacted to.
So now I've done that, here's the latest as I'm aware of it. Normally I'd provide sources but I'm on my iPad so it's difficult to do so.
US embassies across the Great Middle East are closed until Saturday due to the current threat, the embassies of other western nations in Yeman have also been closed with staff being evacuated from the county.
Additionally a global travel alert has been issued for all US citizens, with US/UK citizens in Yeman being told to leave immediately.
Yeman's security services have been placing much of the country on lockdown, with the army out in force due to intelligence indicating that a large number of Al-Qa'ida operatives are in the country to work on the expected attack.
They (Yeman's security forces) have also just recently announced that they have foiled an attempt by AQ to blow up several oil pipelines and seize control of costal cities, howev they remain on high alert, so there is obviously more to come.
Mod edit:
- As of July 2024, the OTC Israel and Palestine thread
is locked indefinitely and that discussion should not migrate to other threads. Discussion of terrorism or extrajudicial activity related to either of them (including speculation about a connection to them) is banned here.

Which they are doing. It's just they won't be ethnically Arab, though they'll still be citizens. At least in the UAE and Bahrain. Probably Qatar and Kuwait too. Saudia is a bit of a different beast (as always) and Oman, which never had too much oil by comparison to the rest of the Gulf, already has a fairly developed industry, and a fairly free gov't to handle it.
Those bastards are on the run and losing more and more ground now that they face a real fighting force instead of unarmed civilians and poorly trained militias.
The cries of ISIL and BH fanboys is wonderful.
Inter arma enim silent legesPeople believing that Daesh is a false flag op: I have no idea how any modern First World government or intelligence service can order the closest thing humanity has had to a Chaotic Evil organization about, have their orders followed and not get caught. Of course, this probably ties in to my prior statement that people believe that so-and-so is a false flag op because they share their beliefs yet cannot believe that someone would actually practice them.
And if it were true, I really would not know whether laughing at the jihadists for falling for it hook, line and sinker would be appropriate.
I don't think I should spend more time on the Malaysian Internet than I already do.
I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiot
Is it bad that the first thing that I thought of was "Afghan Intelligence is a thing and not an oxymoron?" How do they fare compared to the ISI and co.?

As I have already said: all the defense forums are full of weirdos.

I'm sure if Pakistan ever falls into the hands of Islamists the CIA and USAF have several plans and procedures to turn every single nuclear warhead and launch site in Pakistan into parking lots and big craters.
Pakistan is only an "ally" because the consequences of having a nuclear armed backwards country and full of Islamic extremists with a bone to pick with India isn't something the Americans are willing to deal with and go unchecked.

Not as easy as you think. Pakistanis are many things, but being fools is not one of them.

I fully agree. Sadly though, some of those guys are current and former military, and coupled with what one sees in Pakistani media, it seems the view is more widely spread than I'm comfortable with. Given that every 1 in 180 people serve the military there, it's not much of a surprise.

Welp. The guy was a prince, I think Jordan will make their support a lot more overt now.

That should probably be amended to: if you're a high profile foreign kidnapee you're almost certainly dead. Daesh used to (and probably still does) make a steady income from kidnap ransoms, according to their Wikipedia article
(I've read other articles about it too). There are a number of countries that do pay ransoms, and in those that don't, individuals may pay them anyway. Here's a list of some of them
, though the ransoms mentioned were to groups like Al Qaeda rather than Daesh.
About their torturing the Jordanian pilot to death: yep, they're sick puppies who are clearly most interested in recruiting other sick puppies (and terrifying everyone else to join or otherwise give in to them).

They really really REALLY want Jordan to enter this war. Suicidal Overconfidence...
I'm going with them being just that stupid, terrorist have a tendency to think that blowing up a small part of their enemy will be a win, look at the Paris attacks. Terrorists rarely actually help their own cause with their actions, as the kind of people with proper long term tactical planning ability also tend to avoid becoming terrorists, those that do tend to have more realistic goals like "set myself up as a small warload and rule shit for a few years before legging it with a ton of money" as opposed to the standard "bring the West to its knees and establish a great empire".

A lot of the Gulf states are conscience that the oil days won't last forever, and have been investing in the tech and service industries so their economies have a replacement.
