BBC showed a video of a camera being able to record the moment the VBIED detonated near the courthouse.

As of now, four out of five suspects are freed from PSNI custody. Their intel suggests that New IRA sympathizers were the culprit.

Some residents were evacuated near the area that was bombed. And British troops were called as backup in response to masked persons hijacking vehicles in two security incidents. A third one was foiled though with the attempted hijacking on a bus.

There was an abandoned lorry in the Northern Road. PSNI officers were called to examine it if it was meant to be some kind of trap via VBIED.

[up]Hmmmm. My initial impression: if what I suspect about that 50-year old guy still in custody pans out, I'd like to knee him in the balls on behalf of the lads. You poor idiot, passing the stupid you lived through on to the lads is doubly stupid.

Also...

Addressing MPs in the Commons on Monday afternoon, Prime Minister Theresa May said: "This house stands together with the people of Northern Ireland in ensuring that we never go back to the violence and terror of the past."

That would hold a lot more weight if this wasn't on you and the way you're trying to push Brexit forward, you incompetent fool.

You think this is a response to Brexit?

Brexit is threatening the GFA with the restoration of a hard Irish border, and the Republicans can't be too happy with the DUP being part of the ruling coalition.

I guess May will get to have the "honor" of being remembered as the PM who restarted the Troubles.

[up]Looks like. <sighs>

Remember how taking back control from Europe would make us more secure? I think I'd rather ditch Brexit and hug the Good Friday Agreement, thanks.

Also, the Northern Irish Assembly? I know it's beyond difficult to make work, but... you know... maybe giving it another go?

But someone might have been financially inappropriate! Which is clearly worth shutting down Stormont entirely for years on end, probably costing more by now than whatever impropriety the DUP has done.

This is the thing: I'm really disappointed that reaching for the bombs again has happened. But, it's not like I don't sympathise with the point many Republicans make.

The DUP are not just getting their cake and eating it, they're doing it while effectively blocking access to the bakery counter and making demands of the manager, who is, with the excuse that they are valued customers, not kicking them out.

The only effective counter is for Sein Fein to take their seats in Westminster. Which they will never do, for reasons both historical and political.

So, yeah: this entire situation? DUP and Tory in the making, and totally avoidable.

One of the earliest points people made on behalf of the Remain campaign during the referendum was "leaving the EU is highly likely to break the Good Friday Agreement and restart the Troubles".

But, that was deemed fear-mongering by the mostly Tory-UKIP's Leave campaign's spin machine, since sorting out a new border agreement would be piddlingly easy. Somehow.

[up]Democratic Unionist Party. Currently semi-unreliably part of the Tory majority in the Commons. The major political party of the Unionists.

They're pro anything they perceive as screwing Sein Fein over, anything that keeps Northern Ireland in the Union and anything that prevents a border between Britain and Northern Ireland. They're iffy about a hard border with the Republic of Ireland (because it really will screw their constituents over financially, if nothing else — but, hey, at least it makes full Irish unification harder!), but adamant on the topic of no border of any description between Northern Ireland and Britain.

Supporting the Tories with Brexit... kind of does that. At the rather high risk of completely wrecking the Union down the road. And likely Irish unification after the ensuing bloodbath they will have helped cause. Yeah.

At this point, unless there's an orderly transition out of the EU and the EEC for Britain, the chances of a violent separation of Northern Ireland from the Union go up drastically.

It's bad. Very, very bad. Just the thought of the Troubles restarting is enough to give everyone the shakes. Well, perhaps not for the hardline Orange and Green nutters, but just about everyone else.

How viable are both sides recruitment efforts going to be, assuming a hard border goes up? From what I know, the hold outs are basically ideological, semi-organized thugs who are getting pretty long in the tooth nowadays, they'll need new blood if they want to start some serious and sustained violence.

[up]Hence why I'm giving the 50-year-old guy (who I think is still detained?) involved in the London/Derry bombing a huge amount of side-eye.

The kids got released. Think about it. -_-'

Yeah, the nutters are out there. At least one of which seems to have already gone some way to getting active in recruitment.

I once said that we might see the reunification of Ireland in our lifetimes, but I sure as hell didn't want it to happen this way.

Instead of focusing on relatives that divide us, maybe we should try to find the absolutes that tie us.

I am personally of the opinion that there isnt going to be a Brexit. Not an expert in the issue, nor do I live in GB, but I see no other way out for them at this point.

News out of Afghanistan.

Taliban laid siege in Maidan Shar on Afghan troops while peace talks are still ongoing.

Basically, they used a hijacked Humvee and configured it as a VBIED to ram the entrance and use the big hole to lay siege.

NHK reports that the Asahi Shimbum received a threatening mail, accompanied by what seemed to be white powder —> potassium cyanide.

The letter warns of threats to send more PC unless 35 million South Korean won, or about 31,000 dollars, is paid in Bitcoin.

Other places targeted this week consist of drug companies in Tokyo and Osaka, a foodstuffs firm in the northern city of Sapporo, and another Tokyo-based newspaper.
