So with the recent global terrorism alert I realised that we don't have a place to discuss such events as they happen and how they are being dealt with/reacted to.
So now I've done that, here's the latest as I'm aware of it. Normally I'd provide sources but I'm on my iPad so it's difficult to do so.
US embassies across the Great Middle East are closed until Saturday due to the current threat, the embassies of other western nations in Yeman have also been closed with staff being evacuated from the county.
Additionally a global travel alert has been issued for all US citizens, with US/UK citizens in Yeman being told to leave immediately.
Yeman's security services have been placing much of the country on lockdown, with the army out in force due to intelligence indicating that a large number of Al-Qa'ida operatives are in the country to work on the expected attack.
They (Yeman's security forces) have also just recently announced that they have foiled an attempt by AQ to blow up several oil pipelines and seize control of costal cities, howev they remain on high alert, so there is obviously more to come.
Mod edit:
- As of July 2024, the OTC Israel and Palestine thread
is locked indefinitely and that discussion should not migrate to other threads. Discussion of terrorism or extrajudicial activity related to either of them (including speculation about a connection to them) is banned here.

Yeah, CNN mentioned them too. WHAT IS THE KHORASAN GROUP, TARGETED BY US IN SYRIA?
"The Khorasan Group is a relatively small al Qaeda unit - made up of just some 50 hardened fighters with mixing jihadist affiliations, according to a half-dozen officials with knowledge of the group."
Apparently we had intel that they were planning some sort of attack, so we decided to stop by and say hello...
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.Abu Qatada
- Abu Qatada cleared of terror charges and released in Jordan
— Don't come back to Britain, though.
ISIS:
- Islamic State finds fertile ground in Jordan
- Westminster 'set to be recalled' over Islamic State action
— In the middle of Conference Season.

Keep Rolling OnThe US is focusing their strikes on IS' money making oil refineries; which get them about 2 million USD a day.

Got reports from Times and other papers that police officers in Australia shot a teen dead after injuring two officers with a knife. The said officers were from a CT team sent to talk to him since his passport was made invalid for being involved in a plot by planning to curt off someone's head followed by threats against Canberra.
A raid found some interesting stuff, including an ISIS flag.
They are not the only ones. The Taliban decapitated more than a dozen people in Afghanistan
, radicals in the Philippines threaten to do the same to German hostages
& a man in Oklahoma chopped a woman's head off, while trying to kill another as well.
Meanwhile, some members of the US Gov are shitting themselves on the prospect that the fire at O'Hare International
may have also been an act of terrorism.

It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.^ Regarding the Oklahoma thing, a more immediate inspiration may have been that the alleged attacker was recently fired from the plant, though the method chosen for the attack certainly doesn't exactly inspire one to think his recent conversion to Islam was unrelated.
[edit] As for the O'Hare fire, you really should consider another source other than Russia Today, which picks up where Pravda left off as a government mouthpiece, and has... issues, shall we say, with accuracy.
The fire wasn't at the airport, but in the basement of the FAA facility in Aurora, Illinois that handles tracking aircraft in the region, set by a contract employee that was apparently attempting a destructive suicide. Flights were shut down for 5 hours, and will be running slow for part of today. (source)

All your safe space are belong to TrumpMay not be connected with the OK thing mentioned before, but man arrested for threatening to cut off a co-worker's head, claiming he "represented ISIS and that ISIS kills Christians".
Combine this with a report I heard (no link handy) that OK Muslims were later cheering the guy mentioned previously, and it's probably going to get really uncomfortable really quick for Muslims in that state, regardless of where they stand on terrorism.

All your safe space are belong to TrumpLooks like the Philippine Army is prepping up on the pope's visit next year. They'll be under national police supervision.
They just hope ISIS won't take advantage of the fact that the pope doesn't use armored vehicle. But I don't think they'll ignore that thought.
Obama: U.S. 'Underestimated' ISIS, Overestimated Iraqi Army.
^ At the risk of jumping into US Politics thread territory, I wouldn't recommend holding your breath on something more, or at least not an effective something more (and given Bush Jr's mishandling of the post-conquest phases of Iraq and Afghanistan, "effective" is a pretty low bar to clear
).
There are several "endgames" that they might pursue: for example they could use a combination of military, law enforcement, and financial strategies to starve the Da'esh of their revenue streams (which are to a large part criminal in nature). They could try to work with neighboring countries to cut off trade and supply routes. They could seek a coalition of local Sunni tribal leaders to take back some if not all of the lost territory.
Whether or not they are doing any of these things I dont know.
I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart. To be fair, any such planning wouldn't likely be seen by the public until after the fact, with that whole "classified" thing.
However, I'm skeptical there are any plans more detailed than "pack up our bags and go after a set time" (see the withdrawal from Afghanistan). Of course, I'm hardly a cheerleader for the Obama administration...

All your safe space are belong to TrumpWell, I always knew football hooligans were wacko, but this comes out of left field...
I think this falls under reason #1 DAESH appeals to young males from entirely unrelated and unconcerned backgrounds: fantasies of Testosterone Poisoning.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Not especially surprised. Go down Ibrox or Parkhead on match day and you'll hear plenty of charming ditties glorifying the UVF or the PIRA. Football brings out the worst in some people. I imagine the appeal is shock value.
Also, is the translation legit?

Schild und Schwert der Partei

Been seeing mention of Greater Khorasan as another threat in the same area as Daesh. They're being targetted by airstrikes too. Seems more of the Speak Softly, Carry Big Stick school of terror compared to al-Baghdadi's crew.
