Global terrorism thread

Go To

So with the recent global terrorism alert I realised that we don't have a place to discuss such events as they happen and how they are being dealt with/reacted to.

OP text (regarding events that were recent st the time)
First however I'd like to lay down a disclaimer, this is not a place to discuss the ethics of the "war on terror" it's for talking about current global threats, if you want to debate the ethics of the war on terror than make a thread for it, this is not the place.

So now I've done that, here's the latest as I'm aware of it. Normally I'd provide sources but I'm on my iPad so it's difficult to do so.

US embassies across the Great Middle East are closed until Saturday due to the current threat, the embassies of other western nations in Yeman have also been closed with staff being evacuated from the county.

Additionally a global travel alert has been issued for all US citizens, with US/UK citizens in Yeman being told to leave immediately.

Yeman's security services have been placing much of the country on lockdown, with the army out in force due to intelligence indicating that a large number of Al-Qa'ida operatives are in the country to work on the expected attack.

They (Yeman's security forces) have also just recently announced that they have foiled an attempt by AQ to blow up several oil pipelines and seize control of costal cities, howev they remain on high alert, so there is obviously more to come.

Mod edit:
  • As of July 2024, the OTC Israel and Palestine thread is locked indefinitely and that discussion should not migrate to other threads. Discussion of terrorism or extrajudicial activity related to either of them (including speculation about a connection to them) is banned here.

So I just found this thread and I guess the trial for the Boston bombing goes here? This is what Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, mother of Dzhokhar, said.

I can't help but see her as a terrible person. The prosecution, defense and jury long agreed that the Tsarnaevs were responsible, and yet she's still saying they're innocent. Plus, she herself is wanted on a criminal warrant and has not returned to US since 2013, not even to attend the trial for her own son. Did she even bother to testify on behalf of the defense? And now this "burn everything" talk that I would only expect from North Korea or ISIS. No mention of the victims in Boston. No remorse, no sympathy, not even pity.

Why have pity for the (perceived) enemy?

Didn't she also have some conspiracy theories regarding all this?

[up]Pity as in "unfortunate that they had to perish during this 'great' cause to bring down the empire of the United States" or whatever. As in, became collateral damage before they could see the greatness. But apparently she doesn't even see the victims because all she sees is evil America.

It also disgusts me that back here, she was equating a killer to people that are actually dying. Two very different cases.

Hey, since I used to be one of them, I can offer an insight into how they legitimize killing American civilians.

Here's how the 'logic' goes:

1- America is a democracy

2- A democratic country is one where the people can choose what kind of government they live under

3- A government belonging to a democratic country that is actively attacking a different nation is doing so because everyone in that country are fully supportive of their government's action

4- Therefore, the entire nation of America is responsible for any death their military has caused, intentional or otherwise

5- Because every civilian is a voter and has a say in the government, they are legitimate targets because they are essentially part of the government

6- An alternative version of this 'explanation' is that because Americans pay taxes and their taxes fund their military, killing them is acceptable retribution for them supporting a war campaign.

Yes, I know, almost nothing in that 'logic' is true, but this is the mentality of a lot of extremists. The myths and misunderstandings about democracy in the real world and the people having power is taken as fact and is used to legitimize the deaths of anyone claiming to be a citizen.

"If America is the land of democracy, then that means their people want to destroy every country they've struck against" or so says their delusions.

I was very fortunate in being able to meet people from all over the world and realizing every time after I talk to a bunch of people "holy crap everybody in this country is different". (Please note I was a dumb teenager when I made this minor epiphany)

From that Think Progress article that was linked to on the last page: "...On April 10, a former congressional candidate from Tennessee was arrested for plotting to kill Muslims and destroy a mosque. In court this week, 63-year-old Robert R. Doggart admitted to plotting to kill residents in Islamberg, a Muslim area in the state of New York."

Doesn't sound like he got to the implementation stage. If he hadn't acted on his plot yet, then there might not be a lot they can charge him with. Even so, he's currently out on bail and is looking at up to five years in prison.

As for Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, I can feel some pity for her as a mother in denial. Provided she doesnt contribute to any further plots.

I'm not sure what Chechynians might have against us. So far as I can recall, the US has never attacked them.

I'm done trying to sound smart. "Clear" is the new smart.

[up][up] Failing to help against the Russians while going around claiming to be the guardian of human rights everywhere is probably it. A lot of people get angry at the US for that.

Could always stop claiming to be a global protector of human rights and instead admit to helping where you can as long as it doesn't go against other interest.

That incorrectly implies there was a Chechen national movement worth helping.

Got to do things with ones own interests in mind, especially with regards to war.

Also, the Chechen groups were fighting each other as much as they were the Russians.

... "Islamberg"

-berg is a common suffix for cities on that side of the country.

Yeah, but... "Islamberg". I never expected a modern US or European city to ever bear the name of a religion, much less the name of Islam.

Well come on. Give them a break. We are talking about the nation that Reality TV shows came from. Surely their creative minds have been kinda exhausted by now and we can allow some leeway on the names they use! tongue

Town names are usually really banal, to be fair. When you think about it, "Islamberg" isn't really any more stupid than "New York".

Sounds to me like a literal ghetto. Next before you know it there will be Muslims nordifying their names into Cottonberg and Wrenchstein, and those stereotypical names will be identity markers worldwide. 😂
