Arrgh! I was having so much fun with Ys The Oath In Felghana, but then I found out I'd missed a missable sidequest (and with that screwed myself out of completing the character book).
But I continued, thinking "oh well", and did the Elena Escort sidequest instead. Then I got a lot of complicated progress done in Esbern Mountains.
...and then I died, losing all my progress in the Mountains. In a moment of rage-quit, I clicked "Return To Title" instead of Retry.
...meaning that I didn't just lose all my progress, but I also have to do the Elena escort again, because I forgot to save earlier!
So yeah. Gonna take a break from Ys 3 now and maybe start a fresh game on it later (with a guide, so I can do a 100% run). Back to grinding in Dragon Quest IV, I guess.
Join us in our quest to play all RPG video games! Moving on to disc 2 of Grandia!- Tales of Graces F
- Tales of Xillia
- Atelier Meruru
- Ni No Kuni
- Eternal Sonata
- Record of Agarest War 2 (It's a gigantic improvement over the first)
- Star Ocean: The Last Hope International (not as bad as people make it out to be)
- Final Fantasy XIII (YMMV, but the character development is pretty good and I like the plot)
- Resonance of Fate
- Okami HD (PSN only)
That's my list. No particular order.
EDIT: Oh, you said top 5. Whatever.

I played and beat SO 4 and FFXIII already. I've heard lots of good things about Tales though. Isn't there a sequel to Tales of Xillia?
Thanks for the list!
Xillia 2 will come out at some point in 2014. Namco sucks at localizing Tales in any reasonable timeframe.
(I am currently in a Tales frenzy—ready for my second run of Graces, almost finished with Abyss and playing through Rebirth. I'd better find a new series soon.)

"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerWell about all thos Ateller games?
I had no idea there were other JRPG series that ran as long as FF. But SMT is about as long and I think Tales is about as long too.
But yes, go play Xenosaga! Episode 1 is the best and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It's a great game and a great introduction to the trilogy.
Tales is a decade younger than FF, but they've been releasing mothership titles in more frequency than SE have been releasing main FF in recent years. It's reasonable to expect a mothership Tales once every three years, while FF has been ranging from 4 to 7 years between main titles lately.
Anyway, I still have lot sof Tales to play. I'd have ordered Vesperia, but the taxes to bring stuff from Japan or Hong Kong are just nightmarish. -__- I'm a poor student, gaming industry.

"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerShouldn't I play the other Ateller games for the PS 3 before I play Meruru? It says it's the last one in a trilogy or something.
Rorona is kind of blah, but it's getting a VITA rerelease. Totori is a lot better, and it has a VITA rerelease. I found Meruru to be the best one, and it has the kingdom development things as well.
The original version of Rorona isn't really worth it unless you really want to see the kind of underwhelming story about where Rorona came from.
Of course who knows if or when the English version of the remake will come out for PS 3.
So if I were to go crazy and just buy up every game in a JRPG long runner, and I had to choose between Megami Tensei, Ateler or Tales, which series would I come out of with the most good?
I play JRP Gs for story and characters, if that's any help. I can tolerate a crappy battle system or dungeons as long as I love the narrative. (Xenogears <3)
Mega Ten, hands down. Especially Persona. Tales is rather inconsistent in story quality (not to mention that you miss quite a few if you don't speak Japanese) and Atelier is...well, it's more restrained, as far as JRPG goes. Mega Ten has the best JRPG writing out of the three, and is rather good overall, I'd say.

"If you aren't him, then you apparently got your brain from the same discount retailer, so..." - FighteerJust noticed I keep spelling it Atel Ler and not Atelier. I'm dumb.
But man, how have I not heard about this series before a few months go? It's quite prolific.
It doesn't get much advertisement. And Atelier Totori Plus got absolutely no advertisement when it was released here. It just showed up on the Playstation Network and Tecmo Koei didn't bother telling anyone.
Tecmo Koei is really focused on advertising in Europe, which is fine, as long as they advertise in North America too.
Ni No Kuni 2 better not be a PS 4 exclusive. Otherwise I will find a way of walking to Japan and having pointed words with Sony.
I have Persona 2 Eternal Punishment and there is a translation patch for the PS 1 version of Innocent Sin. I need to get to play those.
In the meantime however, what's Digital Devil Saga like? I mainly heard about it because people were saying stuff like "if you enjoyed Xenogears, you'll enjoy DDS."
It's fairly good - though the story has awful pacing and the characters heap cliche upon cliche, it has a strong battle system, engrossing atmosphere assisted by interesting art direction (Hindu temple architecture + post-apocalyptic wasteland + Disneyland is a fairly effective combination) and mostly memorable soundtrack.
...

I got pretty far in DQVIII, but then got lost and stopped. I didn't know what to do/where to go next. I probably got much farther in DQVIII than in other DQ games I've played partially due to the likable characters and gorgeous cel-shaded graphics and soundtrack.
I actually got similarly lost in VP2. The last thing I remembered was Lezard joining my party and something involving a dragon... orb, but I hadn't the foggiest on where to go next.
VP2 was the most gorgeous PS 2 game I'd seen up to that point.
