The episode ended with them on the moon.
It's what Spongebob wanted.
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I get that, but it was a terrible ending. Granted it was the first season in which the show was just trying things out.
SpongeBob and Patrick were arguably the antagonists of that episode.
This is why I may read the book since it has a much better ending.
EDIT: If I were Sandy, I would have ended the friendship with SpongeBob in this episode.

I have an unpopular opinion regarding the episode "Gone." While it was extremely mean spirited for the town to abandon Sponge Bob without an explanation, I don’t think they were wrong for how they feel regarding wanting a break from him.
I've recently had a thought about that "Krab Borg" episode, specifically the moment where SpongeBob claims that robots can't laugh, and Squidward tells Mr. Krabs a joke about pirates, yet neither Krabs nor SpongeBob laugh.
Why didn't Squidward call out SpongeBob for not laughing at his joke? Would he have accused SpongeBob of being a robot himself? Or would the episode have ended too quickly?
Spongebob probably didn't get it...
Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. Check out my art if you notice.I get Spongebob has a vibrant supporting cast and all and has already tried A Day in the Limelight and a spin off show, but Sandy always came off as the least flawed recurrent character. Like she's basically a Parody Sue with a few Not So Above It All moments.
She's a character that can be fun as a foil or supporting character sometimes but I'm not sure if she'd work as a lead, especially when even the main show has bouts of barely using her.
I will admit her land animal premise has a lot of lore potential which isn't actually seen or expanded a whole lot though.

I'm remembering a deleted scene from the first movie that was going to have SpongeBob and Patrick meet Sandy after escaping Shell City, and showed that she was basically off on her own adventure during the events of the movie. It got cut pretty early on, hence why she has a smaller role in the final movie as one of Plankton's slaves:

So, something major might have leaked; two uncensored voice clips from the episode Sailor Mouth.
The video doesn't have the clips in question because YouTube, but it is someone who specializes in lost media going over and analyzing it to test the legitimacy of it. From looking at every angle, there's a lot that points to the clips being genuine and not AI fakery.
Edit: You Tube doesn't want to embed so here's a link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aChicMfTn9c

Edit edit edit: The original Internet Archive page where it leaked got taken down. I think these may indeed be the genuine uncensored audio.

see my completed Tangled (Varian) fanfic collection! https://archiveofourown.org/works/24467056/chapters/59049532Yeah, "Mid-Life Crustacean" has basically become the "Stark Raving Dad" of SpongeBob SquarePants, both episodes coming from their shows' respective third seasons, and the only legal way to watch them now is owning the seasons' respective DVD box sets (though "Stark Raving Dad" is only available on pre-2019 pressings of the DVD set; I have a feeling that Nickelodeon will probably remove "Mid-Life Crustacean" from future pressings of the Season 3 DVD of SpongeBob).
It's baffling how this episode gets banned from streaming services for its inappropriate content, and yet "One Coarse Meal" (which had a suicide joke) gets to stay.

I actually reading a junior novel adaptation for that episode and it had an extended ending. Basically, Sandy repairs the rocket and takes everybody home, but she uses the net gun to keep SpongeBob tied up so he wouldn't mess things up again. With the punchline being that this causes Patrick to think that SpongeBob was an alien the whole time.
